Candlelight: Olivia Dean

Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge

A string quartet plays Olivia Dean, from Lady Lady to Man I Need, for 60 minutes by candlelight in Southwark Cathedral. Two evenings, 17 December 2026 at 21:00 and 9 January 2027 at 19:00, from 19.42 pounds with fees.

Olivia Dean, born in Tottenham in north London, is a London singer, and this is one of the newest programmes in Fever's London series. The tentative list has 16 entries, several of them pairs of songs joined together, drawn from both her albums: Messy (2023), which was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, and The Art of Loving (2025), which topped the UK Albums Chart, according to Wikipedia. It opens with UFO and Nice To Each Other, takes in Lady Lady, So Easy (To Fall In Love), Carmen, Echo and a Messy Growth medley, and closes with Man I Need.

Dean's songs come out of soul and old pop, with warm, simple melodies and a lot of room around the voice, and that is what makes them work for strings. A quartet can carry the tune on the first violin and let the cello take the bass line, and the slower songs, such as Carmen and The Hardest Part, sit well in the nave. As the show is new, it has no reviews of its own on Fever yet, and Fever names the players only as a string quartet. It is a tribute: Fever says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by the artist.

The two dates suit different evenings: 17 December 2026 at 21:00, after dinner and the Christmas lights, and 9 January 2027 at 19:00, before it. A restricted-view seat is 19.42 pounds on both; Zone B is 38.32 pounds in December and 40.95 in January. Southwark Cathedral, a Gothic church beside London Bridge, is about 100 metres from the station, and Shangri-La The Shard, London is a 5-minute walk.
