Why this one

The seven room categories split cleanly into what they look at. Three face the patio or the city: the 34 square metre Superior and the 41 square metre Deluxe and Prestige. Three face the harbour or the sea: the 42 square metre sea view, the 43 square metre harbour view and the 43 square metre sea view with terrace. One faces the casino, and it is 30 square metres. The sea-view terrace room is therefore the joint largest room the hotel sells, level with the harbour-view room, it has the only terrace below suite level, and its floor range runs from the first to the sixth, which is as high as any room category goes. The square is a one-minute walk from the door; the sea is not, which is the argument for having it in the window.

Above the rooms the ladder is about floor area and then about inclusions. The suites run from 53 square metres over the casino to 124 on the fourth floor, and the sea-view ones repeat the room logic: same 70 square metres with or without a terrace, then the 80 square metre corner with the Palace in view. The five Diamond Suite categories are a different product. Every one of them includes breakfast, an airport transfer from Nice, arrival from 6am and departure until 10pm, and the Garnier, Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace add a massage, a beach cabana and an open bar. Below that line you pay 68 euros a head for breakfast and half a night's rate to leave at 3pm.

Ask for
Ask for the sixth floor, the top of the category's stated range, on the harbour and sea side, and say the terrace is the reason for the booking so that you are not moved to the balcony variant. If you have chosen the casino-view room, ask for the fifth floor, its highest, and for a room on the square rather than the return of the building; the page promises the casino and the coast, not the fountain.
Avoid
The Superior, Deluxe and Prestige patio-view rooms if the view matters: guests consistently call the inner-courtyard outlook ordinary, and at this address you are paying for a window. Be equally careful with the Deluxe's city-or-patio wording, which lets the hotel decide. And do not read the beach club or the rooftop pool into the entry rate as if they were on the doorstep: the beach is a shuttle away and the roof is closed to under-16s.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out. The Corner Suite sea view with terrace, 80 square metres on the third to sixth floors, is the one category below Diamond level whose page promises the Prince's Palace, the harbour and the sea in one view, and it comes with a terrace. If you want the square, the Diamond Suite Garnier is the honest answer: 179 square metres with a 44 square metre terrace on the second floor directly over the Place du Casino, two bedrooms, and the Diamond inclusions that the 53 square metre casino-view suite does not get.

Our verdict

If the address is the point of the trip, book it. If it is not, the Hermitage does the same Monaco with less noise.
