What we looked for

Walkable Monaco means Monte-Carlo, and Monte-Carlo turns on the Place du Casino. It is the measuring point: 9 minutes' walk down to the harbour, 13 to the station, 15 to Larvotto beach, 20 to the Oceanographic Museum and 22 to the Prince's Palace, and the government says the whole principality can be crossed on foot in under an hour. The catch is height: Monaco climbs in terraces, and the 400 metres on your map can include sixty metres of climb. The answer is public: 79 lifts, 35 escalators and 8 travelators, free to use, and buses at 1.50 euros by contactless card, capped at 5.50 a day.

All four hotels here are within five minutes of the square, so choose by what you will walk to most: the Casino and the Opéra, the harbour and the Rock, the boutiques of the Carré d'Or, or the seafront towards Larvotto. Leave the car at home.

No hotel is closer to the Casino than the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the only hotel on the Place du Casino. The Casino, the Opéra's Salle Garnier and the Café de Paris are across the square, the Jardins des Boulingrins fall away below it, and buses 1, 5 and 6 stop in the square. The station's Monte-Carlo exit, which has a lift, is about 13 minutes on foot.

Evenings are on foot too: Le Louis XV and Le Grill are in the building, the Bar Américain has live music every night until 1am, and Pavyllon, Les Ambassadeurs and Tip Top, which stays open late, are three minutes away. The Prince's Palace is the one long walk, 22 minutes each way.

The Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo sits between the two halves of walking Monaco. It stands on Square Beaumarchais, one terrace below the Place du Casino and about 180 metres from the Casino, and Port Hercule is roughly 415 metres downhill, so the harbour, the boats and the way over to the Rock all start from the front door. The station is 9 minutes away on foot.

Within eight minutes on foot are the Café de Paris, Le Louis XV, Le Grill, Rampoldi, Les Ambassadeurs, La Môme's rooftop over the port and Marlow on the new Mareterra seafront, and Pavyllon, the hotel's counter restaurant, is off the lobby. The public lifts and escalators take most of the effort out of the climb back.

The Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo is at 4 avenue de la Madone, in the Carré d'Or, one street back and just metres from the Place du Casino. That puts the boutiques of the Carré d'Or on the doorstep, with the Métropole Shopping Centre a few steps away, while the hotel itself stays behind its own gates.

Tip Top and Rampoldi are two minutes away, the Café de Paris three and Le Louis XV four, and Zeffirino and Song Qi are within eight. Larvotto's beaches are about fourteen minutes on foot, and the station is a fifteen-minute walk. For dinner without going out at all, Les Ambassadeurs by Christophe Cussac holds two Michelin stars and serves from Thursday to Monday.

The Fairmont Monte Carlo is the seafront end of walking Monaco. It sits at 12 Avenue des Spélugues, five minutes below the Place du Casino, with the harbour beneath it and Larvotto's public beach about ten minutes along the shore. Rue du Portier, the back street just behind the hotel, is where to find a coffee and a pastry.

Rampoldi and Pulcinella are four minutes away, the Café de Paris and Song Qi five, Le Grill and Le Louis XV six and Pavyllon seven, and Nobu is downstairs. The station is about 17 minutes on foot, or ten minutes by bus or taxi. In Grand Prix week the cars run round the hairpin and through the tunnel under the hotel, which is why race fans book it.

Is Monaco walkable?

Yes, with help. The government says the principality can be crossed on foot in under an hour, and it counts 79 public lifts, 35 escalators and 8 travelators to deal with the terraces. From the Place du Casino the harbour is 9 minutes, the station 13, Larvotto beach 15, the Oceanographic Museum 20 and the Prince's Palace 22. The Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo and the Fairmont Monte Carlo are all within five minutes of the square.

How far is the walk from Monte-Carlo to the Prince's Palace?

From the Place du Casino it is 22 minutes each way. Two shortcuts help. The Bateau Bus crosses the harbour from Quai des États-Unis to Quai Antoine Ier in four minutes, from 8am to 7.50pm, on an ordinary bus ticket, and bus lines 1 and 6 stop at both the Place du Casino and the Place d'Armes, from where the Palace is 5 minutes up the hill. From the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, the harbour is downhill from the door.

Do you need a car in Monaco?

No. The central hotels charge for the address: parking is 70 euros a day at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and 55 at the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, and the Fairmont Monte Carlo charges 60 euros a night, 75 from May to September and 85 in Grand Prix weeks. The general public car parks cap at 24 euros for 24 hours. The bus is 1.50 euros by contactless card, capped at 5.50 a day, under-fives ride free, and the Bateau Bus crosses the harbour on the same ticket.

What is central Monaco like in Grand Prix week?

A racetrack. The circuit runs through the Place du Casino, past the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, down to the hairpin at the Fairmont Monte Carlo and through the tunnel under it, then along the port, so every central address is inside the barriers for weeks before. The 2027 race is 3 to 6 June, a sprint weekend, and the E-Prix uses the same streets on 1 and 2 May 2027. Expect minimum stays and higher rates, so book a year out, or come another week.
