The catch at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Four things stand between the photograph and the stay. The photograph is the Place du Casino seen from a balcony, and the first thing to know is that most of the 206 rooms do not have that balcony.

On our shortlists

  1. The entry rooms look into the patio, and the casino-view room is the smallest in the hotel

The hotel sells seven room categories and only one of them faces the square. The entry Superior is 34 square metres on the second to sixth floors with a balcony over the patio, the courtyard the 2019 rebuild cut through the middle of the building. The Deluxe and the Prestige are both 41 square metres, the Deluxe sold as city or patio view and the Prestige as patio view. The room that actually looks at the Casino de Monte-Carlo is the Exclusive Room casino view, and the hotel's own page gives it as 30 square metres on the second to fifth floors: the smallest room the hotel sells, and the one everybody wants.

The other way to the postcard is a Diamond Suite. The Garnier, 179 square metres with a 44 square metre terrace on the second floor, is the suite whose terrace looks over the square. Everything in between faces the harbour and the sea, which is the better window and the quieter one.

What to do. Decide which photograph you are buying. If it is the square, book the 30 square metre casino-view room with your eyes open; if it is Monaco, book a sea-view room with a terrace and walk to the square in a minute.

  2. The square is loud until late, and the square is the point

The hotel's neighbours are all open when you want to sleep. The Café de Paris across the square runs from 8am to 1am every day on its own page, and Amazónico on its roof, with a live orchestra on the terrace and a DJ in the club, is open from 7pm to 2am and until 3am from Thursday to Saturday. The hotel's own Bar Américain has live musicians every evening until 1am, and the casino, the taxis and the cars being photographed in front of it keep their own hours. Some guests report that the square-facing rooms hear the traffic and the crowds. The noise is not really the bars; it is the square itself, busy from lunchtime until late and busiest in summer, and the rooms that look at it are the rooms that hear it.

In Grand Prix week the circuit itself runs round the Place du Casino. For 3 to 7 June 2027 the hotel's four-night package, prepaid, starts at 748 euros a night.

What to do. Take the harbour and sea side on the highest floor available, and pack earplugs if you insist on the square. If you want the same Monaco and a quiet night, the Hermitage is two minutes behind.

  3. Everything is priced for the address, and the extras are listed in black and white

The hotel's practical-information page spells it out. Breakfast is 68 euros a person a day for the signature buffet, in the restaurant or in the room, and 65 euros for the Cédric Grolet version, Wednesday to Sunday only. Parking is 70 euros a day. The tourist tax is 7 euros an adult a day on top of the rate. A late check-out until 3pm costs half the nightly rate and after 4pm the full rate, and only the Diamond Suites get the 6am arrival and 10pm departure free. One dog of up to 15 kilos is allowed per room, with a daily surcharge.

The beach club is the exception: the room pages promise access in season, and the group says a sun lounger comes with it; cabins, terraces and cabanas cost extra on the club's 2026 tariff. A handful of guests report the buffet is served in what feels like a function room, which at 68 euros a head is worth knowing.

What to do. Book a rate with breakfast in it and compare against the room-only rate before you decide it is expensive. Do not hire a car at Nice airport; the train from Nice-Ville reaches Monaco-Monte-Carlo in about 23 minutes.

  4. The pool is on the roof, seasonal, and closed to under-16s; the beach is a shuttle ride away

The hotel's own pool is the Wellness Sky Club on the top floor: 500 square metres with a heated outdoor pool, sauna, hammam, a lounge bar and a Technogym room, reserved for in-house guests. The pool, sauna, steam room and bar run from 10am to 7pm and the fitness room from 7am to 9pm, and the page states it is not accessible to children under 16. Every room page calls it seasonal without giving dates.

The sea is not below the window. Beach access means the Monte-Carlo Beach Club in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, open from 13 April to 11 October in 2026 with a shuttle, and the kids' club there runs daily in July and August for ages 4 to 12, at a fee. The consolation is next door: guests can walk straight into the Thermes Marins, whose 25 by 13 metre sea-water pool is heated to 29 degrees and open from 7am to 9pm daily, access the spa sells to outsiders as a 160 euro weekday package.

What to do. With children under 16 the rooftop is off the table, so treat the Thermes Marins pool as the hotel pool. If a beach outside the door is the holiday, this is the wrong address in the right town.

Who should skip it

Light sleepers who want the square view, because the two do not go together. Families with children under 16 who imagine a rooftop pool afternoon, since they are not admitted. Anyone who reads 68 euros for breakfast and 70 for parking as an insult rather than the going rate, and anyone whose Monaco is a beach.

Who should book it anyway

Anyone for whom the Place du Casino is the point of the trip, because this is the only hotel on it. The rebuild is real, the rooms are large for a grand hotel, and the three-star restaurant is downstairs. Book a sea-view room with a terrace, high up, and let the square be a one-minute walk.

Our verdict

If the address is the point of the trip, book it. If it is not, the Hermitage does the same Monaco with less noise.
