The catch at The Maybourne Riviera

Four things stand between the photograph and the stay, and the first of them is the cliff the photograph was taken from. None is hidden, and none matters if you came for the view, but each one has cost someone a day they expected to spend differently.

On our shortlists

  1. Nothing is walkable, and every outing is a drive down the corniche

The address is 1551 route de la Turbie, on the Grande Corniche above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Routed on foot from the hotel door, the old village is 2.5 kilometres and 34 minutes away, all of it downhill and all of it to be climbed back; Casino Square in Monaco is 3.6 kilometres and 48 minutes on foot, 10 minutes by car. La Turbie, the nearest village with a café worth the trip, is 8 minutes by car. The hotel's own beach club, La Môme Riviera at the tip of Cap Martin, is 11 minutes by car and 72 on foot.

The hotel knows this and prices it in. Its inclusions list a complimentary shuttle to and from Monaco and a complimentary shuttle to the beach club; check whether your rate also covers an arrival transfer from the Nice area. What is not free is your own car: guests report a valet charge of about 50 euros a day, and the hotel's own site does not publish the rate.

What to do. Decide before you book whether you want Monaco as a view or as a place. Use the shuttle for the principality, book a car only if you want the corniche villages, and budget the valet charge as part of the room.

  2. There is no published rate, and the extras are priced like the room

The hotel publishes no starting price for any of its 13 categories, so check the rate for your dates. What it does publish is menus, and they set the scale. On the Riviera Restaurant's 2026 breakfast card an espresso is 10 euros, eggs Benedict 25 and a mimosa 28. At Le 300, the all-day bar, a club sandwich or cheeseburger is 42 euros, a truffle pizza 48 and a classic cocktail 28. At La Piscine a Margherita is 30 euros and the children's menu 39. At abc kitchens riviera the discovery menu is 145 euros before drinks.

Guests rate the rooms, the cleanliness and the sleep above the value. They do not say the place is bad. Some say the bill is.

What to do. Check that your rate includes breakfast, because bought separately it is 45 euros; treat Le 300 as the place for one drink rather than the place for lunch.

  3. The hotel closes for the winter, and the coast around it closes earlier

The hotel publishes no closure notice, but press coverage gives 16 March 2026 as the reopening date and puts the close at 13 November, so confirm November dates with the hotel. The venues thin out before the hotel does. La Môme Riviera's own site lists a closing brunch on 27 September, so the beach club is a summer perk rather than a season-long one, and the hotel sells beach access as summer only, subject to availability. abc kitchens riviera does not serve on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Hostellerie Jérôme in La Turbie, formerly a two-star table, says on its own site that it is closed for the 2026 season and is not in the 2026 Michelin guide.

Guests who came in spring or autumn describe a quiet building, and a clifftop hotel of 65 suites and studios, with one pool and a closed beach club, is quiet by design.

What to do. Confirm the season dates with the hotel before booking anything in March or November, and if the beach club matters, book before the end of September.

  4. One pool, shared with day guests, and slow at the edges

There is one infinity pool, open 9:00 to 19:00 on the hotel's own page, and it is the pool in every photograph. It is not reserved for residents. The same page sells a private sunbed at 300 euros including a 50 euro bar and restaurant credit, and Surrenne's Riviera Moment day offer bundles a 45-minute massage with sunlounge and pool access from 10:00 to 18:00 and lunch at La Piscine, with terms and rates on request. On a summer afternoon the people around you may have arrived that morning.

Guests report slow service at the pool restaurant and non-residents crowding the single pool. The hotel's 65 suites all have a furnished terrace of 15 square metres or more, which is the answer the building gives you.

What to do. Swim early, before the day offers start at ten, and take the afternoon on your own terrace. If a lounger by the water is the point of the trip, this is the wrong hotel on this coast for it.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants to walk to the casino, the harbour or a café; anyone with a beach-first idea of the Riviera; anyone who finds a 42 euro club sandwich hard to enjoy. Also anyone booking March or November without checking the dates, and anyone for whom a quiet hotel is a failed one.

Who should book it anyway

Couples who want Monaco as a view rather than an address, and who will spend the afternoon on their own terrace. Every one of the 65 suites and studios has one, the shuttle removes the corniche from the equation, and the pool at nine in the morning, before the day guests, is the photograph without the crowd.
