The catch at The One Monumental Palace
Five things stand between the photograph and the stay. Most of them are written into the hotel's own pages if you read closely, and each is a reason to book this one with care rather than on the strength of the façade.

The entry rooms are 29 square metres, and the 150 euro step up buys a view rather than space
The Superior and the Deluxe are both 29 square metres on the hotel's own pages. The Grand Deluxe City Views is 29 on its room page and on the hotel's fact sheet, and 33 on the room list and in the FAQ, so at best the step up adds four square metres. For 9 to 11 February 2027, with breakfast and free cancellation, the Superior was 285 euros a night, the Deluxe 335 and the City Views 435; for 20 to 22 April 2027 the same three were 415, 465 and 565. The gaps held at 50 and 150 euros in both months.
All three are sold for two adults, and their equipment lists give a rain shower and no bath. The first bath, and the first category sold for two adults and a child, is the 45 square metre Deluxe Suite, at 685 euros in February; infant cots are free on request. Guests report that the entry rooms feel small for a five-star rate.
What to do. Treat the room as somewhere to sleep between the spa and the city, and pay for the window rather than the floor area. If you need a bath or are travelling with a child past cot age, price the Deluxe Suite from the start.
Only one room category is sold on its view, and even that one is not promised the avenue
The hotel attaches no view to the Superior, and sells the Deluxe, the same 29 square metres, as "spacious" and on the upper floors with pleasant natural light. The Grand Deluxe City Views is the only room category sold on what it looks at, and its page promises "magnificent Porto views" without naming Avenida dos Aliados. The Deluxe Suites face the patio on all five floors, where the hotel has installed a mural by the Porto artist MrDheo and sculptures by Rosa van de Vooren, an open-air gallery it says is visible only from the rooms.
The one category whose description names Aliados is the 80 square metre Porto Suite, at 1,735 euros a night in February, and the hotel's FAQ places the avenue views on the suites' balconies. Its fact sheet adds that décor, size and views may vary with the room allocated. Asked in that FAQ about a terrace or a rooftop, the hotel points to the suites' balconies, to Yakuza and to the bar.
What to do. Book City Views and ask in writing for a room on the avenue side. If the view of Aliados is the reason for the trip, the Porto Suite is the only category that names it.
Avenida dos Aliados is where Porto sees in the New Year and dances through São João, right under the windows
The avenue is the city's stage. For the arrival of 2025 the city prepared for more than 100,000 people there, closed it to cars from 20:30, fenced it together with Praça da Liberdade, shut the Aliados metro station and launched the fireworks from the town hall at its top, with a DJ set to close the night. For São João on 23 June 2026 it was again one of the three big stages: a screen showing a World Cup match from 18:00, DJ sets from 20:00, concerts from 22:00 and a DJ duo billed until 4 in the morning.
If you are here for the party, the avenue-facing rooms are front-row seats. If you are not, they are front-row beds. On ordinary nights the avenue still carries traffic, and one thread of guest feedback mentions noise through the windows on that side.
What to do. If your dates include 31 December or 23 June, either join in or ask for a room on the patio side. Light sleepers should make the same request on any night.
The starred dining room is shut two nights a week, and the spa pool is shared with day visitors
Le Monument, one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, serves dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, so a Sunday and Monday stay misses the hotel's main table altogether. Yakuza by Olivier, the hotel's modern Japanese room, is the other table in the building, and its own site lists a lunch menu as well.
The Grand Bleu Spa runs to 350 square metres, with a heated pool the hotel calls an experience pool, a hammam, a sauna and three treatment rooms. Its policy says the gym and the water area are free for guests, other spa services are charged, and advance reservation is required. The water is not yours alone: people who are not staying can buy an Aqua Pass to use the same facilities, and the spa sells memberships.
What to do. Reserve Le Monument when you book the room and build the stay around a Tuesday to Saturday. Ask for the spa's hours at check-in and book any treatment at the same time.
Service is uneven for a five-star, and a car is an expense you do not need
Guests praise the breakfast and the spa, and report that service and bed comfort vary from room to room. Of the four reviews the hotel shows on its own home page, one praises the beds and the breakfast and says the staff are not yet at five-star level. The hotel also changed hands in November 2025, when H10 Hotels bought it and renamed it, so older reviews describe a different operator.
Parking is private valet at an extra charge the hotel does not publish, and its terms say a space must be booked in advance. You will not need one: Aliados has its own metro station, and the hotel's own directions from the airport are Line E to Trindade, a seven-minute walk from the door. On top of the room rate, Porto's city tax is 3 euros a person a night from the age of 13, capped at 21 euros a guest and paid at the hotel.
What to do. Read reviews from 2026 onwards and put any requests in writing before you arrive. Leave the car at home, or ask the valet rate before you commit to one.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want space at the entry rate, a bath without paying for a suite, or a view you can count on below the Porto Suite. Skip it too if you sleep lightly and your dates include New Year's Eve or 23 June, if you are driving, or if Le Monument must fall on a Sunday or Monday.
Who should book it anyway
Book it if the address is the point. The Clérigos tower, the Lello bookshop and the Bolhão market are a few minutes away on foot, the pool and hammam are free, and a starred dinner is downstairs. Pay for City Views, stay Tuesday to Saturday, and most of the catches shrink.
The catch elsewhere in Porto
- The YeatmanVila Nova de Gaia
It is across the river and up a hill: 21 minutes downhill to Ribeira, a taxi back.
- Casa da CompanhiaRua das Flores, Baixa
No Uber or Bolt to the door: only official taxis and licensed transfers may drive into the pedestrianised street, and the public car park is about 200 m away.
- Torel AvantgardeMiragaia
It is on a hill roughly 1 km from Aliados and about 19 minutes' walk from Ribeira, uphill on the way back.
- Vila Foz Hotel & SpaFoz do Douro
Half an hour from the old town on the 500 bus, or a taxi ride, so every evening in Porto is a journey back.
- The Rebello Hotel & SpaVila Nova de Gaia
There is no outdoor or rooftop pool; the spa pool is small, semi-heated and pre-booked, and closed to under-sevens.
- 1872 River HouseRibeira
Half the rooms face the street, so a river view is a category you must book, not hope for.
- Six Senses Douro ValleyDouro Valley, Samodães, Lamego
Rates are the highest in this edit and reviews question value at peak; guests also report a service charge added to the bill.
- Quinta Nova Winery HouseDouro Valley, Covas do Douro
It is isolated: Terraçu's is the only dinner without driving narrow roads in the dark, and guest opinion on it is mixed for the price.
- The Vintage House HotelDouro Valley, Pinhão
Rooms are classic and comfortable rather than smart, and a steady thread of feedback mentions tired fittings and air conditioning that struggles in July and August heat.

Our verdict
If you want to stay on Porto's main square in a building that has always been the grand one, this is the address. Pay for City Views, ask for the avenue side, and let the spa and Le Monument carry the evenings.
