The catch at The Yeatman
Five things stand between the photograph and the stay. Most of them follow from a single fact: the hotel sits high on the Gaia bank looking across the river at Porto, which is what makes the view and what makes the walk home.

Porto is across the river, and every walk home ends uphill
The Yeatman is on the Gaia bank among the port lodges, which is exactly why its terraces look at Porto. It is also why Porto takes effort. On foot, Praça da Ribeira is 21 minutes and about 1.5 kilometres away, down to the quay and over the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, and São Bento station is 26. The hotel's own driving directions take the road about 500 metres uphill from the riverside before the turn for the hotel, and that climb is the last part of every walk home.
Public transport helps rather than solves it. General Torres metro is nine minutes away on foot, and the hotel says line D trains run every 6 to 15 minutes to São Bento, Aliados and Trindade; buses 901 and 906 take about 13 minutes to Trindade by its account, traffic permitting.
What to do. Walk down and ride back: take the metro or a taxi up after dinner. If your Porto means stepping out of the door into the old town, sleep on the north bank and come here for lunch.
Some rooms are showing their age, and breakfast is not in every rate
Guests report the same pattern in recent reviews: the view, the breakfast and the staff carry the stay, and some rooms have worn, dated finishes that the view does not quite hide. The hotel dates the renovation of its spa, which reopened in July 2023, but gives no such date for its rooms, and it publishes a floor area for only two of its suites.
The bill also grows in ways the headline rate does not show. Breakfast is included only in some rates, and if yours leaves it out, the breakfast page quotes 45 euros a person. The minibar is charged in every room and suite below the Master Suites, and Gaia's city tax, 3 euros a guest a night since 21 August 2026, is added at check-out.
What to do. Choose a rate whose description says breakfast is included, which is the check the hotel itself recommends, and ask when you book which rooms in your category were refurbished most recently.
The entry rooms are two lifts from the main building, and some face the garden
The building is stepped down the Gaia hillside, and the hotel is candid about what that means at the bottom of the ladder. Its Executive Rooms are on floors 1 to 3 of the east wing, which it describes as further away from the main building and reached by two lifts; the plain Suites share the wing on floors 1 and 2. Both are sold with Porto or the gardens in view, so the entry rooms are the ones most likely to look at lawn rather than the river. Guests report long corridors and a confusing layout between the wings, which is the same geography seen from inside.
What to do. If the view is the reason you are here, start at the Superior Deluxe Panoramic on floors 5 to 7. If you do book an Executive, ask for one facing Porto and allow time for the walk.
The outdoor pool closes from November to March, and the indoor one is shared with day visitors
The decanter-shaped infinity pool in the photographs is open daily from 09:00 to 20:00 between April and October, and only to hotel guests. The hotel calls its indoor pool heated, at about 30 degrees, and says no such thing of the outdoor one, which guests report as cold. From November to March the indoor pool, open 08:00 to 20:00, is the only water, and it belongs to the Wine Spa, which sells Spa Access to non-residents at 48 euros for a morning slot and 75 for an afternoon one, and lets anyone booking a massage or treatment use the pool too. There is no children's pool, and the spa is for 16 and over, though children may swim in the indoor pool with an adult.
What to do. Swim between 08:00 and 10:00, before the spa opens to outside guests, and do not book a winter stay for the pool in the pictures.
The two-star dining room is shut on Sundays and Mondays
The Gastronomic Restaurant is half the reason to stay, and it keeps short hours: dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, in three seatings at 18:30, 19:30 and 20:30, for diners aged 12 and over. Ricardo Costa has cooked here since 2010 and has held two Michelin stars since 2017. There is one menu, Origins, at 260 euros a head for Chapter I or 300 for the longer Chapter II, with wine pairings at 130 or 260 euros and a non-alcoholic one at 120. Arrive on a Sunday for two nights and you miss it altogether. The Orangerie does lunch and dinner every day, and Dick's Bar & Bistro serves light dishes until 23:00, but neither is what the stars are for.
What to do. Plan the stay around a Tuesday to Saturday night and book the table when you book the room.
Who should skip it
Anyone whose Porto means stepping out of the door into the old town, and anyone who will not take a taxi home up a hill after dinner. Also families who want an outdoor pool between November and March, and anyone arriving on a Sunday for two nights for the restaurant, which will be closed both nights.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone for whom port, the river and a terrace to drink it on are the trip. Book the Superior Deluxe Panoramic on a rate with breakfast, eat in the dining room on a Tuesday to Saturday night, take the metro or a taxi back up the hill, and each catch above becomes a choice rather than a surprise.
The catch elsewhere in Porto
- The One Monumental PalaceBaixa, Avenida dos Aliados
Superior and Deluxe rooms are 29 square metres, which feels tight at the rate.
- Casa da CompanhiaRua das Flores, Baixa
No Uber or Bolt to the door: only official taxis and licensed transfers may drive into the pedestrianised street, and the public car park is about 200 m away.
- Torel AvantgardeMiragaia
It is on a hill roughly 1 km from Aliados and about 19 minutes' walk from Ribeira, uphill on the way back.
- Vila Foz Hotel & SpaFoz do Douro
Half an hour from the old town on the 500 bus, or a taxi ride, so every evening in Porto is a journey back.
- The Rebello Hotel & SpaVila Nova de Gaia
There is no outdoor or rooftop pool; the spa pool is small, semi-heated and pre-booked, and closed to under-sevens.
- 1872 River HouseRibeira
Half the rooms face the street, so a river view is a category you must book, not hope for.
- Six Senses Douro ValleyDouro Valley, Samodães, Lamego
Rates are the highest in this edit and reviews question value at peak; guests also report a service charge added to the bill.
- Quinta Nova Winery HouseDouro Valley, Covas do Douro
It is isolated: Terraçu's is the only dinner without driving narrow roads in the dark, and guest opinion on it is mixed for the price.
- The Vintage House HotelDouro Valley, Pinhão
Rooms are classic and comfortable rather than smart, and a steady thread of feedback mentions tired fittings and air conditioning that struggles in July and August heat.

Our verdict
If Porto for you means port, the Douro and a terrace to drink it on, this is the hotel that was built for exactly that. Accept the hill and the taxi, and book the panoramic category.
