The catch at 1872 River House
Five things stand between the photograph and the stay. Most of them are written down somewhere on the hotel's own pages, and every one of them is cheaper to know before you book than at the front door.
On our shortlists
Half the rooms look at the city, so the river is a category you have to book
The house has eight rooms and sells them in two categories, split down the middle. The Superior Room with River View has the Douro in the window; the Charm Room with City View, the other half of the house, does not. For 9 to 11 February 2027, the early-booking rate with breakfast was 159 euros a night for a Charm room and 198 for a Superior, a gap of 39 euros. For 20 to 22 April 2027 the same two rooms were 301 and 385, and the gap had grown to 84.
The hotel publishes no room numbers and no floors, so the category is the only promise of a view you will get. A Charm room keeps the address, the lift and the breakfast room over the river; it just does not wake you up to it.
What to do. Book the Superior Room with River View, and treat any river photograph shown beside a Charm rate as somebody else's window.
The rooms are 17 and 20 square metres, and the air conditioning draws summer complaints
A Charm room is 17 square metres and a Superior 20, sizes the hotel's room page leaves out. Each has one double bed, a desk, a minibar and a bathroom with a shower. Guests report little storage, which matters more on the fourth night than on the first. Every room is sold for two people: search for three and the hotel offers you two rooms, so a family of three pays for both, and the only extra it lists is a baby cot on request.
Every room has air conditioning, and it is the complaint that keeps coming up in summer reviews: guests report units that struggle or fail in the heat, in rooms too small to escape it.
What to do. Pack for a small room and switch the air conditioning on as soon as you arrive. If it is not coping, tell reception that evening, before it closes at 11.
Ribeira is loud on summer weekends and on São João, hence the ear plugs
The hotel offers ear plugs on request and says so on its own page, which is a fair guide to what the quay below sounds like on a warm Saturday night. Guests report noise from the waterfront crowds and bars at weekends and on festival nights, and the river rooms, the ones you pay extra for, face the quay it comes from.
The loudest night is São João, 23 to 24 June. The hotel's own blog describes toy hammers, bonfires and grilled sardines, with fireworks over the Douro at midnight drawing thousands to both banks, and sells the night as a private show, with the Douro in the window. It prices it like one: a Superior for the night of 23 June 2027 was 410 euros with breakfast, more than double the February rate.
What to do. Ask for the ear plugs at check-in rather than at two in the morning. If you want São João, book the river room early; if you want sleep, avoid 23 June and summer Saturdays.
Some rates leave out breakfast, whatever the hotel's page says
The hotel's own page says breakfast is always included. It is not: both categories are also sold on accommodation-only rates, so check what your rate includes. That breakfast, served from 8 to 11 in the living room facing the Douro, is one of the things guests praise most.
The cheapest refundable rate is less flexible than it sounds, too. The early-booking rate, which for both 9 to 11 February and 20 to 22 April 2027 undercut even the non-refundable one, can be cancelled free only until 21 days before arrival in February and 42 days in April; after that you pay for the whole stay.
What to do. Choose a rate that says bed and breakfast, and put the free-cancellation deadline in your diary on the day you book.
Reception closes at 11 at night, and there is nowhere to park
The house is registered as local lodging, a guesthouse rather than a hotel, and it keeps guesthouse hours: reception is staffed from 7 in the morning to 11 at night, check-in starts at 3 in the afternoon, and arriving after 11 has to be arranged with reception and may cost extra. You will also be asked to show the card you booked with. The airport is 17 kilometres away by the hotel's own count, so a late flight needs a plan.
There is no car park. The hotel points drivers to two public ones, the open-air Alfândega at about 30 euros a day and the underground SABA Ribeira at about 60, and would rather you did not drive at all. Budget, too, for Porto's city tax: 3 euros per person per night from the age of 13, which the hotel says applies for up to seven nights.
What to do. If your flight lands late, tell the house in advance and ask what a late check-in costs. If you are driving on to the Douro, collect the car on the way out rather than bringing it into Ribeira.
Who should skip it
Light sleepers between June and September, and anyone in town for São João who wants to sleep through it. Also families of three or more, because every room sleeps two, drivers, anyone arriving after 11 at night without a plan, and anyone who wants a restaurant, a spa or a pool under the same roof.
Who should book it anyway
Anyone who wants to wake up to the Douro in Porto and would rather spend the money in the city than on the hotel. Book a Superior Room with River View on a bed-and-breakfast rate, pack light, keep the ear plugs by the bed, and the Bolsa, the quay and the bridge are all on foot.
The catch elsewhere in Porto
- The YeatmanVila Nova de Gaia
It is across the river and up a hill: 21 minutes downhill to Ribeira, a taxi back.
- The One Monumental PalaceBaixa, Avenida dos Aliados
Superior and Deluxe rooms are 29 square metres, which feels tight at the rate.
- Casa da CompanhiaRua das Flores, Baixa
No Uber or Bolt to the door: only official taxis and licensed transfers may drive into the pedestrianised street, and the public car park is about 200 m away.
- Torel AvantgardeMiragaia
It is on a hill roughly 1 km from Aliados and about 19 minutes' walk from Ribeira, uphill on the way back.
- Vila Foz Hotel & SpaFoz do Douro
Half an hour from the old town on the 500 bus, or a taxi ride, so every evening in Porto is a journey back.
- The Rebello Hotel & SpaVila Nova de Gaia
There is no outdoor or rooftop pool; the spa pool is small, semi-heated and pre-booked, and closed to under-sevens.
- Six Senses Douro ValleyDouro Valley, Samodães, Lamego
Rates are the highest in this edit and reviews question value at peak; guests also report a service charge added to the bill.
- Quinta Nova Winery HouseDouro Valley, Covas do Douro
It is isolated: Terraçu's is the only dinner without driving narrow roads in the dark, and guest opinion on it is mixed for the price.
- The Vintage House HotelDouro Valley, Pinhão
Rooms are classic and comfortable rather than smart, and a steady thread of feedback mentions tired fittings and air conditioning that struggles in July and August heat.

Our verdict
For the river outside the window at the lowest price in this edit, this is the one. Book a river room, pack for a guesthouse and spend the difference in the city.
