  • Duration: 40 minutesStart times show in the calendar

Amália Rodrigues is the singer who, in the foundation's words, conquered the great international stages for fado, and this is the house where she lived for 44 years, at Rua de São Bento 193, on the street that runs down past the Portuguese Parliament. It is an 18th-century town house, the museum says, and it has been open to the public since 2001, run by the foundation she set up in her will. The museum says the house is as she left it, and every visit is guided: there is no wandering on your own.

The tour takes about 40 minutes and is given in Portuguese, English or French. On Fever you choose a time and then tell Fever the language you want after you have paid. The guide takes you through the rooms in turn. The museum names the salon with its 19th-century azulejo panels, the suite hung with contemporary Portuguese art, and a kitchen kept as it was in the 1950s. Fever's listing adds what is on show: her stage dresses and jewellery, the robes she wore around the house, her awards and honours, and the furniture and pictures she lived with. The garden is part of the visit too, Fever says.

The house is a working cultural centre as well as a museum. The foundation keeps Amália's archive here, and on its own programme it holds fado concerts in the garden, poetry evenings in its series A Poesia Subiu ao Povo, workshops and temporary exhibitions; those are ticketed separately from the tour.

The visit suits anyone who has heard a fado and wants to know where the music comes from, and it is short enough to fit between lunch in Príncipe Real and an afternoon in Estrela or Bairro Alto. Fever sells the tour, and the museum sells it too, at the same prices.

Why this one

This is the house of the singer herself, not a museum about the genre, and it has the highest rating of the Lisbon listings on our shortlist on Fever: 4.87 from 585 reviews on 30 October 2026. The Museu do Fado in Alfama is the rival, and the two go well together: it tells the story of fado as a whole, Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, for 5 euros. If what you want is to hear fado rather than see where it lived, Fever also sells Fado in Lisbon, a 50-minute evening set with a glass of port in a small hall on Rua do Crucifixo in the Baixa, 4.72 from 105 reviews, from 11.99 euros, and for an evening of a different kind see our Candlelight concerts page.

Buying on Fever costs the same as buying from the museum, with no booking fee either way. The museum's own price list on 30 October 2026 was 9 euros for adults, 7 for over-65s, 4.50 for students up to 25 and free for children up to 12 with their parents, exactly Fever's prices. Fever adds a family ticket, 15 euros for two adults and one to three children, which saves 3 euros on two adult tickets; the museum adds a Lisboa Card price of 7.20 euros and group rates. The museum's own online booking showed more tour times, on the hour from 10:00 on most November days, where Fever showed 13:00 and 16:00 on 30 October; it closed 24 hours before each tour, while Fever was still selling that afternoon's tours that morning. Book on Fever for the family ticket or a same-day visit; book with the museum for a particular time or with a Lisboa Card. Palácio Príncipe Real is a 6-minute walk away, and Memmo Príncipe Real and Hotel das Amoreiras are 11 and 12 minutes on foot.

Complaints

    The catch

    1. Every visit is a timed tour

The house is shown only with a guide, at set times; the museum advises booking ahead to be sure of your day and time.

What to do. Book before you go and arrive a few minutes early.

    2. Ask for your language after booking

Fever sells one tour and asks you to say after purchase whether you want it in Portuguese, English or French.

What to do. Contact Fever with your ticket ID as soon as you have booked.

    3. Fever has fewer times

On 30 October 2026 Fever showed tours at 13:00 and 16:00 that day, while the museum's own booking listed tours on the hour from 10:00 on most November days.

What to do. If Fever's times do not suit, check the museum's own booking at the same price.

    4. Closed on Mondays

The house opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and the last tour starts at 17:20.

What to do. Plan it for a weekday morning or afternoon, between Príncipe Real and Estrela.

    5. Bring proof for a student ticket

Fever says a valid document is essential for the 4.50 euro student ticket, for anyone up to 25.

What to do. Carry a student card or ID showing your age.
