Palácio Ludovice

Palácio Ludovice was built in the 1740s for João Frederico Ludovice, the architect of the Mafra palace, and it stands at the top of the Elevador da Glória on Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, beside the miradouro. The house had a long second life in the wine trade: the Port Wine Institute took it over, and the Solar do Vinho do Porto, opened by the institute in February 1946, now occupies premises inside the building. It opened as a hotel in 2022 with 61 rooms, a wine bar and tasting programme built around Portuguese producers, and Federico, the restaurant. The conversion was led by Miguel Câncio Martins, the architect behind the Buddha Bar in Paris.

The palace rooms keep carved wooden ceilings and hand-painted tiles, and two keep their frescoes. The newer rooms are cleaner and quieter. Across both you get blue-and-white azulejos in the bathrooms, exposed stone arches and wool carpets whose patterns come from the Douro vineyards, which is the wine theme working quietly rather than loudly. The ground floor is the best part of the hotel. The old courtyard has been glazed over and planted with a vertical garden, and the bar sits in a former cellar under a brick ceiling.

Federico is the restaurant and wine bar in that courtyard, contemporary Portuguese cooking, open for lunch and dinner. The Solar offers something like 150 Port and Douro labels to taste and buy, Monday to Friday, and the hotel runs tutored tastings and pairings by reservation. There is no pool. Wellness is a Caudalie Boutique-Spa with two treatment rooms, grape-based from the products up, plus a small gym. The location is the practical winner among the historic options here: Príncipe Real up the road, Bairro Alto behind you, Chiado seven minutes down.

The pattern in guest feedback is that the building and the wine offer are the draw, the staff are friendly, and the noise from Bairro Alto is the recurring complaint. Rooms vary widely, and the newer wing has less character than the palace side. The wine theme is a strength, but it can feel like a programme rather than a personality. The funicular itself has not run since the derailment of September 2025, and Carris does not expect a replacement before 2029, so the climb from Restauradores is on foot for now. It suits a weekend where you want a hotel with a story, a good glass of wine at the end of the day and everything within walking range.
