The take

Verride Palácio Santa Catarina occupies an 18th-century palace beside the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, the viewpoint where Lisbon gathers to watch the sun drop into the Tagus. It opened in 2017 after a long restoration and has 19 rooms and suites, some with original stucco and painted ceilings, a restaurant called Suba, and a rooftop with a small pool and a bar that looks straight down to the river and the bridge.

The pattern in guest feedback is that the rooftop and the river-facing suites are the reason to come, that the building is genuinely grand rather than decorated to look it, and that the staff-to-guest ratio shows. The palace is a few minutes from Chiado on foot, though the last stretch is a climb.

Book it for an anniversary, a proposal, or a trip where the hotel is the occasion. Compared with the Four Seasons Ritz it gives you scale and drama in a fraction of the rooms; compared with Bairro Alto Hotel it is more secluded and more expensive. For a romantic weekend in Lisbon we would put it first.

The room to book: Superior Room with River View

About the same size as the city-view Superior, but on the fifth to seventh floors with the Tagus in the window. In a 19-room palace built on a miradouro, this is the difference between staying in the building and staying for the view.

Ask for
The sixth or seventh floor on the river side. For a balcony, step up to a Premium Suite on the sixth, Pombaline floor.
Avoid
Third-floor rooms in summer, where guests report the air conditioning struggles, and lower-floor city-view Superiors that give up the river for a small saving.
