Verride Palácio Santa Catarina

Verride Palácio Santa Catarina occupies an 18th-century palace beside the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, the viewpoint where Lisbon gathers to watch the sun drop into the Tagus. The house dates from around 1750 and was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake flattened this side of the city. Its name comes from the Count of Verride, who arrived in 1910 and turned a building that had been let out floor by floor back into a single palace. A heavy 1970s remodelling undid some of that, and the restoration that reversed it was run by the architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte with the interior designer Andrea Previ.

It opened in December 2017 after that long restoration and has eighteen rooms and suites, some with original stucco and carved wooden ceilings, a restaurant called SUBA, and a rooftop with a small pool and a bar that looks straight down to the river and the bridge. The categories run from the Santa Catarina Superior Room through Junior Suites and Premium Suites to the Salavisa Suite, the Royal Suites and the Royal Wing, and what separates them is which way the windows face and how much original ceiling you get above your head. The pattern in guest feedback is that the rooftop and the river-facing suites are the reason to come, that the building is genuinely grand rather than decorated to look it, and that the staff-to-guest ratio shows.

Fábio Alves runs both kitchens. SUBA is the serious one, recommended by Michelin since 2022, and it takes the terrace and the view at dinner. The Lisbon Club 55 is the looser room, Portuguese cooking with a bar attached, open to the city as well as to guests. Above them sit the Panoramic Pool and the Verride Sunrise Terrace, a bar that turns a full circle over the rooftops and the water. There is no spa, though treatments are bookable in-house through Pure SPA Signature by Anabela de Sousa. Parking, unusual on this hill, exists at €25 a day subject to availability.

The catches are the ones the setting hands you. The miradouro crowd below is loud on summer evenings, so ask about room position before you commit. River-view suites climb quickly in price, and entry rooms face away from the river altogether. A hotel this small means no gym to speak of and a pool that fits a handful of people. Book it for an anniversary, a proposal, or a trip where the hotel is the occasion. Compared with the Four Seasons Ritz it gives you scale and drama in a fraction of the rooms. Compared with Bairro Alto Hotel it is more secluded and more expensive.
