Delayed or cancelled flight from Luton: what you are owed
For anyone whose flight from Luton is late, cancelled or overbooked, including if you are waiting in the departure lounge now. Here is what the airline owes you today, how much compensation your route pays, and how to claim it, free or with help.
The short answer
Every flight leaving Luton is covered by UK261, whatever the airline, from easyJet and Wizz Air to Ryanair. Reach your final destination three hours or more late, or have your flight cancelled at short notice, and you are owed £220 (up to 1,500 km), £350 (1,500–3,500 km) or £520 (over 3,500 km; £260 if you arrive three to four hours late), unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances. Whatever the cause, the airline must also look after you while you wait.

What is your flight worth?
–
A guide, not legal advice. The amount is per passenger, on top of the meals, drinks and hotel the airline owes you while you wait.
Stuck at London Luton right now?
While you wait at Luton, the airline must give you meals and drinks once the delay reaches 2 hours on flights up to 1,500 km, 3 hours on flights of 1,500–3,500 km and 4 hours on longer flights, plus a hotel and transport to it if you cannot leave until the next day. Once the delay reaches 5 hours you can choose a refund instead of flying. This applies even when the delay is not the airline's fault, so if no one helps, buy what is reasonable and keep every receipt.

What delays flights at Luton, and which causes pay
Three in four Luton departures run to time: in 2025, 75.0% left within 15 minutes of schedule, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, and only 131 were cancelled, 0.25% of those planned and the joint-lowest cancellation rate of the London airports. Long delays are the bigger risk: 259 departures (0.50%) left more than three hours late, the highest share of the five London airports.
Causes that usually pay compensation: a technical fault with the aircraft, crew shortages, a strike by the airline's own staff, and knock-on delays from the airline's own earlier problems. Causes that usually do not: weather that makes flying unsafe, air traffic control restrictions and strikes (including strikes elsewhere in Europe that hold your flight on the ground), security alerts, bird strikes and failures at the airport.
The burden is on the airline: it must prove the extraordinary circumstance and that it could not have avoided the delay with all reasonable measures. Ask for the reason in writing, or screenshot what the app says, before you leave the airport.
Your rights while you wait at Luton
Care comes from the airline that operates your flight, not from the airport, so ask at its desk or in its app. Luton has one terminal, and Sainsbury's Local is open 24 hours on both sides of security, useful if you end up buying your own food and drink late at night (keep the receipt).
If the flight is cancelled, you choose between a refund within seven days and a new flight at the earliest opportunity, and the airline should look at other airlines too if they would get you there sooner. You keep the right to compensation as well, unless you were told at least 14 days ahead or offered a close alternative.
Stuck overnight, the airport lists five hotels close by: Hampton by Hilton, Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, Ibis and Courtyard by Marriott. None is joined to the terminal. Ask the airline to book you in; if it will not, a reasonably priced room and the transport to it can be claimed back with receipts. If you would rather go home, the DART, Thameslink and the coaches run through the night.

How to claim
Claim yourself, free. Use the airline's own claim form with your booking reference and flight number, and ask to be paid in money: you do not have to accept vouchers. If the airline says no, or has not replied after 8 weeks, take it to the airline's CAA-approved dispute scheme, which is also free: easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair and TUI Airways all use AviationADR; other airlines name their scheme on their website. Apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer. If your airline belongs to no scheme, the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team can take up the complaint. A court claim in England and Wales can be brought up to six years after the flight (five years if you live in Scotland).
If you would rather not chase it, AirHelp runs the claim on a no win, no fee basis: it keeps 35% of the compensation, including VAT, if it wins, plus 15% if court action is needed, and charges nothing if it does not win.
Whichever you choose, keep your boarding pass or booking confirmation, your booking reference, receipts for anything you bought while waiting, and the reason for the delay the airline gave you.

Good questions about London Luton
How much compensation for a delayed easyJet flight from Luton?
The same as any airline: £220 for flights up to 1,500 km (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome), £350 for 1,500–3,500 km (Málaga, Faro, Tenerife) and £520 beyond, if you arrive three hours or more late, unless easyJet proves extraordinary circumstances.
What am I entitled to if my flight from Luton is cancelled?
A choice of a refund within seven days or a new flight, meals and drinks while you wait, and a hotel if you are stuck overnight. You are also owed £220–£520 compensation unless you were told at least 14 days before (or offered a close alternative flight) or the airline proves extraordinary circumstances.
My Wizz Air flight from Luton to Bucharest was 4 hours late. What am I owed?
£350, because Luton to Bucharest is about 2,100 km, unless Wizz Air proves extraordinary circumstances. Meals and drinks were also owed from 3 hours.
Is a technical fault an extraordinary circumstance?
Generally not. A fault found in maintenance or one that happens unexpectedly is part of running an airline, so compensation is still due unless the airline proves something exceptional, such as a hidden manufacturing defect.
What happens if my flight from Luton is overbooked?
If you are refused boarding against your will, the airline must pay £220, £350 or £520 straight away, plus a refund or a new flight and meals while you wait. If you volunteer to give up your seat, you get what you agree with the airline, plus a refund or a new flight.
How long do I have to claim for a delayed flight from Luton?
Up to six years in England and Wales, or five years if you live in Scotland. Claim soon anyway: the CAA-approved dispute schemes need you to apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer.
