What we looked for

Inland, the pool does the beach's job. Santa Monica Pier is 25 minutes by car from The Hollywood Roosevelt and 19 from The Beverly Hills Hotel, both off-peak, and the air is warmer than the water: Downtown days average 20°C (68°F) in January and 28.9°C (84°F) in August, while the sea at the pier averages 14.7°C (58.4°F) and 20.2°C (68.4°F) in those months.

Both pools have a history, and they could hardly be more different. The Roosevelt's Tropicana is heated all year, has David Hockney's painting on its floor and is shared with day-pass guests aged 21 and over, with DJ sets at weekends: a pool for being seen at. The Beverly Hills Hotel's, in 12 acres of gardens on Sunset Boulevard, is kept for its own guests, with pink cabanas and the Cabana Cafe beside it. Choose between a scene and a guests-only garden pool, and at either, be down early for a lounger.

The Hollywood Roosevelt

Hollywood, LA

The Hollywood Roosevelt is here for the Tropicana, a pool with a place in the city's history: Los Angeles lists the hotel as a Historic-Cultural Monument under the name Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and Pool. Its floor is David Hockney's work, sweeping blue brushstrokes under the water, and the pool is heated all year. Registered guests swim free from 8am, loungers are free on a first-come basis, and children are welcome with an adult. Food and drinks come from the Tropicana Café and a pool bar on the deck, and Marilyn Monroe is said to have lived in one of the poolside cabanas.

It is a scene by design. Day-pass guests aged 21 and over share the deck, DJs play at weekends, and the pool can close for private events or film shoots. Be down at 8am at weekends, or reserve a private cabana online up to 30 days ahead.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

Beverly Hills, LA

The Beverly Hills Hotel is here for a pool that has been part of its story since 1938, when it opened as the Sand and Pool Club. Today it is for hotel guests only, open to them all year, so the deck is shared only with the people staying. The loungers are striped green and white, with a few in pink, and the pink private cabanas each seat four, with Apple TV, a safe and a fridge. The Cabana Cafe serves the poolside, and the hotel's 12 acres of gardens surround it.

Children are welcome: the hotel describes the pool as family-friendly. Loungers go early, so be down in the morning or ask about a private cabana. Change before lunch, since the Polo Lounge allows no swimwear at any hour.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Los Angeles

Can you use The Hollywood Roosevelt pool without staying?

Yes, if you are 21 or over. The hotel sells day passes and reserved loungers to non-guests of that age, so the deck is shared, and the pool is a scene rather than a secret. Registered guests swim free from 8am, take loungers free on a first-come basis and can bring children, who are welcome with an adult. The pool can close for private events or film shoots, so look at the hotel's event calendar for your dates before you book.

Can non-guests swim at The Beverly Hills Hotel?

No. The pool at The Beverly Hills Hotel is for hotel guests only, and they can use it all year. It dates from 1938, when it opened as the Sand and Pool Club, and today its loungers are striped green and white, with a few pink ones, beside pink private cabanas for four. The loungers are taken early, so be at the pool in the morning. The Cabana Cafe beside it serves breakfast from 10am to 11:30am.

Which Los Angeles hotels have a heated pool?

The Hollywood Roosevelt heats the Tropicana all year. Elsewhere in our ten, heated pools include the outdoor pool at Shutters on the Beach, with a view out to sea, for hotel guests and spa clients; the rooftop pool at Santa Monica Proper Hotel, shared with Proper Club members and day-pass holders; Hotel Figueroa's courtyard pool Downtown, kept at 82°F (28°C); and the 25-metre spa pool at Terranea Resort, for spa guests. The Beverly Hills Hotel opens its pool to guests all year.

Can children use the pools at these hotels?

Yes at both. At The Hollywood Roosevelt children are welcome in the Tropicana with an adult, although day passes are sold only to those aged 21 and over. The Beverly Hills Hotel describes its guests-only pool as family-friendly, so the deck is shared only with other guests. For a pool built for children, Terranea Resort's family pool has a 140-foot waterslide and a splash pad.

Can you book a private cabana at these pools?

Yes at both. At The Hollywood Roosevelt, private cabanas and reserved loungers can be booked online up to 30 days ahead, and the cabanas are kept for overnight guests. At The Beverly Hills Hotel the private cabanas are pink and seat four, each with Apple TV, a safe and a fridge; ask the hotel about one when you book. To sleep beside the water instead, the Roosevelt's Cabana Poolside King has a private patio overlooking the Tropicana.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
