The catch at El Fenn
Four things sit between the photographs and the stay. The hotel states most of them itself, and none is a reason to pass on the Medina's art-filled riad by Bab el Ksour, but each one decides which room to book, when to come and when to go up to the roof.
On our shortlists
The roof terrace is open to outside visitors every day from noon, and it fills at sunset.
The 1,300 m² roof terrace, its 30-foot marble bar and the rooftop restaurant are open to non-residents from noon, and they come up through the boutique beside Bab el Ksour. The bar runs from 12:00 to 23:00, with last admittance at 22:30; the restaurant serves lunch from 12:30 to 15:00 and dinner from 19:00. Drinks are first come, first served, capacity is limited and at busy times numbers are restricted, so sunset is the most crowded hour in the hotel. In autumn 2026 a resident DJ plays from 17:00 to 22:00 on alternate Sundays (8 and 22 November, 6 December), and last New Year's Eve the roof held a dinner and a DJ party that ran late. The evening call to prayer carries across the terrace at sunset.
What to do. For a good seat, go up when the roof opens at noon or after the sunset rush. The pools are for guests only, and the Colonnade Café and the lap-pool courtyard downstairs are reserved for residents.
The cheapest rooms are small, and only some of them have a bath.
The ladder starts with the Cosy Rooms, from 15 m²: four rooms round a zellige courtyard with a plunge pool, redecorated in 2026, each with a tadelakt bath, an overhead shower and a separate toilet, and a shared sitting room with an open fire off the courtyard. Breakfast is not listed for them. The Small Rooms are 20 m², in the original house, above the spa or in the newer Colonel House; all have an overhead shower and only some a tadelakt bath. A sitting area and an open fire in the room start one step up, with the Medium Rooms from 30 m². For 17 to 19 November 2026, for two with breakfast, a Small Room was €680 a night and a Medium Room €781.
What to do. Book a Medium Room if you will spend time in the room. If you take a Small Room and a bath matters, ask for one when you book.
Spring sells out early, and the hotel closes for most of August.
Spring is high season in Marrakech, and with 41 rooms El Fenn fills months ahead. On 31 October 2026, for mid-March 2027, only the Extra Large Rooms were still offered, at €934 a night for two with breakfast, and stays needed at least three nights. Mid-November 2026 had more choice: Small, Medium and Extra Large Rooms and the Three Bedroom Family Suite, from €680 a night. The hotel has announced a closure from 1 to 25 August for updates to its rooms and facilities, and last winter the rooftop served a set festive dinner from 20 December, with the hotel advising guests to book early for both Christmas and New Year.
What to do. For March or April, book as soon as your dates are fixed. November and early December offer more rooms at the lower end of the ladder.
Arriving by taxi means agreeing a fare, though the car stops at the gate.
Cars cannot enter the Medina, and El Fenn is one of the few hotels inside it that a taxi can almost reach. Menara airport is about 10 minutes away by road off-peak; the hotel allows 15. Ask for Bab el Ksour, the large stone gate: walk through, take the first street on the right, and the main door is 5 metres along on the right. Airport taxi fares are often agreed rather than metered, and the hotel itself tells guests to be ready to haggle. It offers a private transfer instead, with a driver holding a red El Fenn sign in the arrivals hall. Inside, the hotel spreads over 13 linked buildings on a two-acre site, with stairs between courtyards and a lift beside the Two Bedroom Family Suite.
What to do. Book the hotel's transfer for the first arrival. For later trips, taxis stop right outside the boutique entrance by the gate. If stairs are hard for you, say so when you book.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants a quiet roof to themselves at sunset, or a large room at the entry price: the Cosy and Small Rooms are 15 to 20 m². Also anyone planning a spa-led resort stay, anyone who finds stairs hard, and anyone travelling in the first three weeks of August, when the hotel is closed.
Who should book it anyway
Design lovers and couples who want to sleep inside a working art collection in the Medina. Forty-one rooms, no two alike, run through 13 linked buildings, with hand-stitched leather floors, tadelakt walls and open fires; the art runs from Hassan Hajjaj and Yto Barrada to Sir Terry Frost and David Shrigley. There are three pools, one of them 13 m and heated to 24°C on the roof, a taxi to the gate, and Jemaa el-Fna 9 minutes away on foot. Book a Medium Room for the sitting area and the fire, go up to the roof at opening or after the sunset rush, and the crowd at golden hour is an easy trade.

The Medina's design riad at full scale: art, craft and colour in every room, three pools and a roof terrace facing the Koutoubia. Check availability for a Medium Room.
