The catch at La Mamounia

None of this is hidden: the hotel publishes almost all of it itself. Each point decides which room to book, what to pack and when to come, and none is a reason to pass on the hotel that has defined Marrakech luxury since 1923.

On our shortlists

  1. The two entry categories look over Hivernage, and the garden view costs more than twice as much.

The Classic Rooms, 28 to 40 m² with twin beds only, sit from garden level to the first floor on the main entrance side, and the Superior Rooms, the same size with a king-size bed, on the second to fourth floors. Both have the Hivernage view, over the residential quarter outside the walls, not the gardens, and both take two people, plus a cot, with no extra bed. On 16 to 18 March 2027 a Classic Room was €705 a night for two, room only, and the Superior Room was not on sale. The views start with the Deluxe Rooms: the Koutoubia Deluxe at €1,209 and the Park Deluxe, over the gardens and the Atlas, at €1,642.

What to do. If the gardens are the reason to come, book the Park Deluxe Room, where every room has a terrace. The Koutoubia Deluxe is the cheaper step to a view, but some face the gardens on that side rather than the minaret, and only some have a balcony.

  2. Breakfast is not included in the room rate, and the tourist tax comes on top.

Rates are room only. Breakfast is a buffet at Le Pavillon de la Piscine, every day from 7:00 to 11:00, or à la carte from room service, and the hotel gives its price only on request. The rates include 10% VAT, but the hotel charges a further 49.50 MAD, about €4.50, per person per night as tourist tax. With no published breakfast price, the cost of a morning buffet for two is not known until you ask. Every meal is on top of the room, though children of 4 to 12 pay half price in the restaurants.

What to do. Ask the hotel for the breakfast price when you book, and check whether your total already shows the tourist tax. For a lighter start, the Pierre Hermé tea rooms serve pastries, fresh juice and Ispahan yoghurt in the morning.

  3. Elegant dress is required in every restaurant and bar, and shorts are out after 6pm.

The rule covers all four restaurants, the four bars and the tea rooms, for guests and outside diners alike. Plastic sandals and flip-flops are not allowed for men or women at any hour, though luxury leather sandals are. After 6pm even smart city shorts and bermudas are refused; children under 12 are exempt. Backpacks and large bags go to the cloakroom at the Ksar Gate, and the pool has its own swimwear policy. It shapes the evening as much as the packing: a drink at Le Churchill after a day in the souks means changing first.

What to do. Pack long trousers or a dress and closed shoes or leather sandals for every evening, and leave the day bag in the room.

  4. There is no kids' club, and the indoor pool is for adults.

Children of all ages are welcome, but the hotel has no kids' club; it can arrange babysitting. The indoor pool in the spa is for guests of 18 and over, or 16 and over with an adult, so younger children swim in the outdoor pool, heated to 28°C all year. The Classic and Superior Rooms take two people and a cot, no more. A cot is free for under-2s, and an extra bed for a child of 2 to 12, in some Deluxe Rooms and suites, costs 950 MAD a night. Three adults need a suite with a sofa bed: the Hivernage, Park, Prestige or Duplex Suites.

What to do. For a family of four, ask for two Deluxe Rooms with the same view, which connect through their balconies or terraces, or book a Hivernage or Duplex Suite, which take up to four.

  5. Easter, All Saints and Christmas carry a minimum stay, and only the summer heat brings the price down.

The hotel is open all year, but it sets a minimum stay at Easter, All Saints and over Christmas and New Year. Most of the year sits near €830 a night for a Classic Room on the flexible rate, while July and August, when Marrakech is very hot, fall to about €555 on a prepaid rate. Check-in is at 3pm and check-out at noon; a late departure, when the hotel can give one, is charged at half the room price until 6pm and in full after that, and an early departure is charged in full.

What to do. For an evening flight home, book the extra night rather than paying for a late check-out, and for a festive stay, book early and plan for the minimum.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants breakfast in the price or a garden view at the entry price, families who need a kids' club, travellers who live in shorts and flip-flops, and anyone who wants the intimacy of a small riad in the lanes.

Who should book it anyway

Anyone who wants Marrakech's grand hotel at its best. La Mamounia, the city's grand hotel since 1923, keeps its walled gardens at Bab Jdid: two-century-old olive trees, orange groves and rose beds, the Koutoubia minaret to the north and the Atlas on the southern horizon, a pool heated to 28°C all year for guests only, a 2,500 m² spa with two hammams, Le Churchill pouring champagne until 1am and three MICHELIN Keys. Book the Park Deluxe Room for the terrace over the gardens, pack for the evenings, and the fine print is a fair trade.
