The day starts in the dark. A 4x4 or minibus collects you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech and, the operator says, drives about 20 km out of the city to its take-off site, where tea, coffee and pastries are waiting. You watch the crew lay out the envelope and fill it with hot air from the burner, then the pilot gives a safety briefing and you climb into the basket. A reseller of the same flight lists two departure slots, at 05:30 and 06:00, so you can fly just before or just after sunrise.

The flight lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, the operator says. From the basket you see the plain around Marrakech, its villages and farmland, and on a clear morning the line of the High Atlas to the south, lit up as the sun rises; in the operator's photos the Marrakech Dream balloon flies among a dozen or more from other companies. A ground crew follows by road, meets the basket where it lands and drives you back to the base.

Breakfast is a traditional Moroccan spread under a tent, and then comes the part guests remember: the pilot calls each passenger by name and hands over a flight certificate. The driver then takes you back to your hotel, or anywhere else in Marrakech you ask for. GetYourGuide gives the whole outing as 4 hours, so most guests are back in town by mid-morning with the day still ahead.

The early hour is not a whim. Balloons fly in the calm, cool air just after dawn, before the sun warms the ground and the wind gets up, which is why every balloon flight around Marrakech is a sunrise flight. Since 20 September 2026 Morocco has kept GMT all year, so in our calculation sunrise over Marrakech falls at about 07:30 in mid-January and about 05:25 in mid-June, and the pickup moves with it.

Why this one

On 31 October 2026 this was the most reviewed of the shared sunrise flights we compared on GetYourGuide whose price looked like a whole fare: rated 4.8 from about 3,000 reviews, from 60 euros a person against a crossed-out 120 euros, with 91% of English-speaking guests giving it full marks and scores of 4.9 for the guide and 4.8 for transport and value. The closest like-for-like rival, Hot Air Balloon Ride with Transfers and Breakfast, was rated 4.8 from about 1,000 reviews and started at 155 euros. Two others with more reviews than that, Sunrise Balloon, Rooftop Breakfast and Certificate (4.8 from about 1,900) and Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon Flight and Berber Breakfast (4.7 from about 2,100), showed from-prices of 9 and 6 euros, which are not full fares: check the calendar before comparing. For a basket to yourselves, the Royal Private Balloon Gourmet Experience was rated 5.0 from 14 reviews, from 660 euros. The same Marrakech Dream flight was on sale on CheckYeti, a reseller, at 173 euros an adult the same day, so GetYourGuide's price is the one to beat; we could not find an operator website taking direct bookings.

If an early start is not for you, Agafay desert at sunset: quad, camel ride and dinner show gives you the stony desert hills south-west of the city in the evening light instead. And after a 05:00 alarm, Hammam scrub and massage, with pickup is a good way to spend the afternoon.

Good for

  • Couples marking an occasion
  • Early risers who want Marrakech from above
  • Anyone who wants the rest of the day free

Not for

  • Anyone who cannot face a pickup before dawn
  • Visitors with a single morning in town, given the weather
  • Travellers over 110 kg or pregnant (reseller's rule: confirm)

When to go

What the morning is like for a sunrise flight, month by month: temperature, sky and rain at 07:00 Marrakech time (GMT), modelled for central Marrakech. From October to March that is around sunrise; in summer the sun is up by about 05:30, so you take off earlier and in cooler air than the 07:00 figures.

Temperature is the median at 07:00, with the coldest morning in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of mornings with little cloud at 07:00; rain, the share of days with 1 mm or more. Modelled from Open-Meteo's historical weather for 2021 to 2025.

Winter dawns are cold

In the data we looked at, the air at 07:00 was about 7°C in January and fell to about 3°C on the coldest morning in ten, against about 23°C in July. July and August had the clearest mornings, nine in ten and more than eight in ten; March and December were the cloudiest, with rain on about one day in four and one in five.

From our Marrakech hotels

The take-off site is about 20 km outside the city, the operator says, but it does not give its address, so the times are routed by car to central Marrakech by the Koutoubia, where GetYourGuide pins the tour, to show how far each hotel is from town; add the drive out to the field. The driver collects from your hotel or accommodation in Marrakech, which covers our five Medina hotels and the two in Hivernage. Cars cannot reach most riad doors in the Medina, so expect to meet the driver at the nearest gate or square. From the Palmeraie, the Route d'Amizmiz or the Agafay desert, ask the operator through GetYourGuide before you book.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Smooth organisation from the early pickup to the drop-off back at the hotel
  • Pilots and crew who make guests feel safe and looked after, scored 4.9 out of 5 for the guide
  • The sunrise over the plains and mountains from the basket, and the breakfast and certificate afterwards

Complaints

  • Photo and video packages offered on site more insistently than some guests wanted

The catch

  1. Fly early in your stay

Balloons fly only when the pilot judges the wind and weather safe, and this one is decided on the morning. The operator's replies to guests on GetYourGuide confirm flights are cancelled on safety grounds and the booking refunded.

What to do. Book your first or second morning, so a cancelled flight can move to another day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

  2. Dress for a cold dawn

In the data we looked at, the air at 07:00 was about 7°C in January and 9°C in February, and 3°C on the coldest January morning in ten. You stand still on the field for a while before take-off.

What to do. From November to March bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves; in summer a light layer is enough.

  3. The photos and drone video cost extra

A photographer and drone pilot work the take-off field and sell pictures and video of your flight. The operator says on GetYourGuide that these are optional extras.

What to do. Decide before you go whether you want them, and say no politely if not; your own phone works fine in the basket.

  4. Expect a little waiting at pickup

The minibus collects several hotels and riads, and the operator says it allows short waits for late guests so nobody misses the flight.

What to do. Be ready in your lobby or at your gate at the time on your confirmation, and keep your phone on.

  5. Compare whole fares, not from-prices

On 31 October 2026 this flight showed from 60 euros, and two rivals showed from 6 and 9 euros, which are not full fares. The price on the calendar can change by date and option.

What to do. Choose your date and two adults on the calendar and compare the total before you book.
