The catch at Nobu Hotel Marrakech
None of this is hidden, and the hotel publishes most of it itself. Each point decides which suite to ask for, when to come and how to plan the nights, and none is a reason to pass on Nobu's first hotel in Africa.
On our shortlists
- Best design hotels in MarrakechMoroccan tilework and carved plaster meet Japanese restraint
- Best spa hotels in MarrakechThe Pearl Spa: over 2,000 m² underground, with a heated mosaic pool
- Best hotels with a view in MarrakechA round rooftop over the city with the Atlas to the south
- Best hotels for food and drink in MarrakechNobu Marrakech downstairs, sushi and a bar on the round rooftop
The rooftop bar stays open until 1am, and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and the music runs late.
The round roof is the hotel's social centre: a pool by day, then a restaurant and bar with curated DJ sets after dark. The rooftop bar runs from 10am to 1am from Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and the rooftop restaurant keeps the same late hours. Downstairs, Nobu Marrakech and the Nobu Bar also stay open until 1am, or 2am at weekends. After dark the music on the roof turns club-style and plays well into the early hours. This is a lively hotel by design, in Hivernage, the quarter of the city's late restaurants and clubs, and the sound on the roof is part of what it sells.
What to do. Light sleepers should ask for a quiet suite when they book, and plan their own late nights for Friday and Saturday.
It is not in the Medina: Jemaa el-Fna is a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride.
The hotel stands on the corner of Avenue Echouhada and Rue du Temple in Hivernage, the garden quarter of hotels just west of the Medina walls. On foot from the door, the Koutoubia is 13 minutes away, Jemaa el-Fna 20, Le Jardin Secret 27 and the Bahia Palace 29, all on flat city pavements, and the Jardin Majorelle is 38. By petit taxi, Jemaa el-Fna, the station and the Jardin Majorelle are each about five minutes away off-peak. The trade runs both ways: a hotel on two city streets rather than in the lanes, and no riad courtyard or roof over the souks. For a Medina stay under the same name, the Nobu Riad, a six-suite house about 5 minutes away by car, is let only as a whole house.
What to do. Walk in by day and take a petit taxi back at night; if the driver will not use the meter, agree the fare before you set off.
Most suites look to the Atlas or the Koutoubia, but some face the street, and the mountains show only in clear air.
The Junior and Deluxe Junior Suites look to the Atlas Mountains or the Koutoubia minaret, and the Deluxe One Bedroom Suites to the city, with the Koutoubia from the veranda in select suites. The building is round, though, and the suites on its north and north-west sides look over neighbouring streets and apartment blocks rather than either landmark. The High Atlas lies 50 to 65 km to the south, so it fills one side of the view and shows best on clear days, with snow on the peaks in winter and spring. The sun sets in the west, over the city and the plain, not over the mountains, which take the evening light instead.
What to do. Ask for an Atlas or Koutoubia side when you book, and take sunset on the roof, where the view runs all the way round.
Spring is the dearest season, and the city tax is paid on top at the hotel.
A Junior Suite with breakfast costs about €735 a night for two in mid-March, and March to May is the dearest stretch of the year, with April and May at the March rate. January and February run about 40% below spring, and November and June sit in between. A city tax of 49.50 dirhams, about €4.50, per person per night is paid at the hotel on arrival and is not part of the room price. In mid-March most suites sell for two nights at least, and the family suites for four. The hotel is open all year, so the cheaper winter months are a real choice.
What to do. For winter sun at the lowest prices, come in January or February; for Easter and the spring, book early and plan on at least two nights.
The roof takes dirhams only and has a dress code, and the rooftop pool closes at 6pm.
The Rooftop Garden accepts payment in Moroccan dirhams only, with no foreign currency, and asks for elegant casual dress, with no shorts. Nobu Marrakech asks for smart casual: closed shoes and sleeved T-shirts for men, and no flip-flops, swimwear or sportswear, for children as well as adults. The round pool on the roof is open all year, from 10am to 6pm, after which the terrace turns to dinner, cocktails and DJ sets, so it is a pool for the day rather than a late swim. The sushi bar keeps the same daytime hours, noon to 6pm. Below ground, The Pearl Spa has a heated indoor mosaic pool.
What to do. Carry dirhams for the roof, pack closed shoes and long trousers for dinner, and plan the sushi bar for lunch, since it closes at 6pm.
Who should skip it
Light sleepers who want silence at midnight, anyone who wants to step out of the door into the souks or wake in a riad courtyard, and anyone whose budget has to leave room for dinners elsewhere. Also anyone travelling with a pool day in mind after 6pm, when the roof turns to the evening.
Who should book it anyway
Food lovers and couples on a winter-sun break. Nobu's first hotel in Africa puts black cod miso, rock shrimp tempura and yellowtail sashimi on the ground floor every evening, a round rooftop pool with a sushi bar and a 360-degree view over the city to the Atlas above, and The Pearl Spa, more than 2,000 m² with a heated mosaic pool and a hammam, below ground. Every room is a suite, and the from rate includes breakfast. Book the Deluxe Junior Suite on the Atlas or Koutoubia side and the Medina is five minutes away by petit taxi.
The catch elsewhere in Marrakech
- La MamouniaMedina
Breakfast is not included in the room rate, so budget for it on top of a price that already starts high
- Royal Mansour MarrakechMedina
There are only 15 Superior riads, from about €2,300 a night in March 2027; on some spring dates they sell out, and the cheapest riad left is the Premier at about €2,780
- El FennMedina
The roof terrace and its bar are open to non-residents every day from 12:00 to 23:00, drinks are first come, first served, and it fills at sunset
- Dar KandiMedina
The rooftop pool is not heated, and there is no lift up to it
- La Villa des OrangersMedina
The entry Deluxe Rooms are 20 m² on the ground floor, opening onto a courtyard; a private terrace starts with the Room with Terrace, which is the same size
- Fairmont Royal Palm MarrakechRoute d'Amizmiz
Jemaa el-Fna is a 20-minute drive: the Medina means the free shuttle at set times, a taxi or a hotel car
- Dar RhizlaneHivernage
Outside the Medina: Jemaa el-Fna is about 32 minutes on foot, so plan on taxis
- Palais NamaskarPalmeraie
The Medina is about 24 minutes away by car and nothing is walkable, so every trip into town means a taxi or a car arranged through the hotel
- Inara CampAgafay
The Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills, not golden sand dunes
