Monaco before you book: the practical facts we checked

Everything below was verified while building the Monaco edit and had no page of its own. It is the practical layer under the ten hotel pages: what the airport transfer actually costs by helicopter, taxi, bus and train, how the principality moves without a car, what parking, breakfast and tourist tax add to the bill at the ten, which dates multiply the rates, and what the Société des Bains de Mer does and does not give its guests. Dated, sourced, and corrected when it changes.

Arriving from Nice Côte d'Azur airport

The airport publishes a fixed taxi fare for 2026: 95 euros to Monaco, before supplements, from entrance A3 of either terminal. Routed door to door, the drive is 30 to 38 minutes to the ten hotels in clear traffic. The hotels sell it dearer: the four Société des Bains de Mer hotels all list an S-Class at 250 euros one way and a V-Class van at 230.

The helicopter is priced a head. Monacair's regular line is from 195 euros a person, about seven minutes in the air, every 30 minutes from 8.15 until the last flight before dark, landing at Fontvieille with an electric van to your door inside the principality. One traveller pays 195 against the hotels' 250 euro limousine; two pay 390. The Société des Bains de Mer hotels quote a shared flight from 245 euros a person, so book the operator, not the concierge.

The cheap route is the train. Tram line 2 runs from both terminals into Nice in under 30 minutes, every seven to eight minutes on weekdays, for 1.70 euros on a Solo ticket; SNCF Connect sells Nice-Ville to Monaco-Monte-Carlo from 7 euros, about 23 minutes. Bus 80, the Nice Airport Xpress, leaves Terminal 2 every 30 minutes, calls at Terminal 1 five minutes later, and takes 45 to 55 minutes to Place d'Armes on the timetable valid from 2 June 2026; some departures also stop at the Office de Tourisme by the casino gardens. A single is 21.40 euros online or by bank card on board, 21.80 if bought from the driver.

Getting around: minutes, lifts and the 1.50 euro bus

On foot from the Place du Casino, Larvotto beach is 15 minutes, Port Hercule's Quai des États-Unis 9, the railway station 13, the Palace 22 and the Fontvieille shopping centre 23. The catch is the contour line: Monaco climbs in terraces, and the government's answer is 79 public lifts, 35 escalators and 8 travelators; its own page says the principality crosses on foot in under an hour. From the Hôtel de Paris the casino is one minute, the Hermitage two, the Métropole three, the Fairmont five; Le Méridien Beach Plaza is 19 minutes along the promenade, Monte-Carlo Bay 23, Monte-Carlo Beach and the Columbus 30 each.

The Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco runs six day lines, two night lines and three weekday express lines from 6 in the morning to 4 the next. A paper single from the driver is 2 euros and a Monapass single 1.50, both with a free change inside 30 minutes; a contactless bank card is charged 1.50 each time you board, capped at 5.50 euros a day. Under-fives ride free. During the 2026 Yacht Show the government has made every CAM bus and the Bateau Bus free, 18 to 30 September. The Bateau Bus crosses the harbour from Quai des États-Unis, 8 in the morning to 7.50 at night, four minutes, same fare and passes.

Three of the ten run their own: the Columbus an electric shuttle on a set circuit inside Monaco, outbound only; The Maybourne Riviera a complimentary shuttle to and from Monaco; and the Société des Bains de Mer shuttles between its hotels.

Which streets are loud, and the quiet side of the border

The loud addresses are the photographed ones. The Place du Casino runs late in summer, and guests in the square-facing rooms of the Hôtel de Paris report traffic and crowds through the window. The Fairmont sits on the Grand Prix hairpin with the circuit tunnel under the building, and its road-side rooms hear the corner all year. The Métropole's street side is the Avenue de la Madone, and guests note the difference an upper floor away from it makes. At the Larvotto end, Monte-Carlo Bay shares a headland with the Jimmy'z club and guests report weekend noise from it. The quiet ones are the Hermitage, one terrace below the square, and the Columbus in Fontvieille, on the far side of the Rock, though its heliport-side rooms hear the helicopters.

Three of the ten are in France, and the border changes the arithmetic. Monte-Carlo Beach is in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin at the end of Avenue Princesse Grace: 30 minutes on foot to the casino along the promenade, seven by car, and a boat to Port Hercule in season. The Maybourne Riviera is on the Grande Corniche above the same commune, ten minutes down the hairpins to the casino by car and 48 on foot; Roquebrune-Cap-Martin station is 27 minutes downhill on foot or nine by car, so the complimentary shuttle is the point. Check whether your rate also includes an arrival transfer from the Nice area. Cap Estel is on the other side, at Èze-Bord-de-Mer: 16 minutes by car to the casino, 33 to the airport, and Èze-sur-Mer station 20 minutes on foot.

Driving and parking

Do not hire a car for Monaco itself; the border is the only reason to have one, and of the three hotels outside it two run shuttles and Cap Estel arranges drivers. If you do drive, the public car parks are cheaper than the hotels. The ministerial order in force from 1 January 2026 makes the first hour free in the general car parks, then charges by 15-minute band up to 2.90 euros, capped at 24 euros for 24 hours, with a night rate of 0.20 euros a quarter-hour between 8 in the evening and 8 in the morning. Car parks with fewer than 60 spaces cap at 30 euros, and the Casino car park has no night rate at all.

The hotels charge for the address. The Hôtel de Paris lists its car park at 70 euros a day, the Hermitage 55, Monte-Carlo Bay and Monte-Carlo Beach 40 each. The Fairmont prices by calendar: 60 euros a night with in-and-out privileges, 75 from 1 May to 30 September, in Yacht Show week and over New Year, and 85 in Formula 1 and Historic Grand Prix weeks, with 20 euros a day for visitors. The Columbus charges 30 euros for 24 hours from 1 November to 1 April, the lowest of these six, and 40 from 2 April to 31 October, level with Monte-Carlo Bay and Monte-Carlo Beach. At the Métropole, Le Méridien Beach Plaza, The Maybourne Riviera and Cap Estel, ask for the rate before you arrive.

The dates that move prices and close roads

The Automobile Club de Monaco has fixed the 84th Formula 1 Grand Prix for 3 to 6 June 2027, and for the first time it is a sprint weekend: a single practice and sprint qualifying on the Friday, the sprint at noon on the Saturday followed by qualifying, and the race on the Sunday. The circuit runs through the Place du Casino, past the Hôtel de Paris, down to the Fairmont hairpin and through the tunnel under the hotel, then along the port, so every central address in this edit is inside the barriers for weeks before. The Fairmont's 2027 package starts at 15,900 euros, four nights minimum covering Thursday to Sunday, paid in full at booking and non-refundable. Book a year out or book June elsewhere. The Monaco E-Prix uses the same streets on 1 and 2 May 2027.

The Historic Grand Prix ran on 24 to 26 April 2026 on the same circuit and returns in 2028; the club has not yet published the dates. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters fills the Country Club next to Monte-Carlo Bay from 3 to 11 April 2027. The Monaco Yacht Show occupies Port Hercule from 23 to 26 September 2026, opening 10 to 6.30 and to 6 on the Saturday, and it is not a casual visit: a one-day pass is 700 euros, two days 1,300, three days 2,070, the Wednesday alone 400, online only. The Rallye Monte-Carlo, 21 to 24 January 2027, moves the town less.

When Monaco is cheap, and when it closes

The entry rates on our ten hotel pages are low-season rates, spring and autumn for the two that close in winter: 180 euros at the Columbus, 220 at Le Méridien Beach Plaza, 250 at Monte-Carlo Bay and the Fairmont, 400 at the Métropole and Monte-Carlo Beach, 492 at the Hermitage, 600 at the Hôtel de Paris, 650 at Cap Estel and 700 at The Maybourne Riviera. Those pages put summer at roughly double and Grand Prix week higher again with minimum stays; the Fairmont's four-night Grand Prix package confirms the minimum stay. The Fairmont's definition of peak, printed on its parking tariff, is 1 May to 30 September plus Yacht Show week and New Year, and it is a fair map of the year.

Winter is cheap because two of the ten are shut and the resort parts of the others are drained. Monte-Carlo Beach is open from 13 April to 11 October 2026, and its pool and Beach Club run on the same dates. Cap Estel does not print its dates on its own site; its tourist-office listing gives 10 May to 18 October for 2026. Monte-Carlo Bay's sand-bottomed lagoon is open from 14 May to 27 September 2026, 9 to 7 in May, June and September and 8 to 8 in July and August. The Columbus heats its outdoor pool from mid-April to early November, weather permitting. April to June and September into October are the months to aim for: the lagoons are open and only the tennis and the boats fill the town.

What the rate includes, and what the Société des Bains de Mer gives its guests

Breakfast is an extra at every Société des Bains de Mer hotel, and the group prints it: 68 euros a person for the buffet at the Hôtel de Paris, or 65 for the Cédric Grolet breakfast from Wednesday to Sunday; 58 at the Hermitage; 55 at Monte-Carlo Beach; 48 at Monte-Carlo Bay. Tourist tax is per adult per night on top: 7 euros at the Hôtel de Paris and the Hermitage, 5 at Monte-Carlo Bay, 4.02 at Monte-Carlo Beach, which is in France.

The Thermes Marins, the 6,600 square metre spa with the seawater pool, connects indoors to the Hôtel de Paris and the Hermitage, and access is complimentary for guests of those two and of Monte-Carlo Beach. A day in the wellness area is 160 euros for everyone else; treatments are extra. The Monte-Carlo Beach Club is reserved for members and guests of the same three hotels, complimentary with a sun lounger; cabanas and the Petit VIP kids' club sessions cost extra.

The Casino is free for guests of the group's hotels and for My Monte-Carlo members from Silver status. Otherwise entry from 2 in the afternoon is 20 euros and includes 10 to spend on the slots, at the bar or in the Salon Rose on a bill of 40 or more. Bring a passport or an EU identity card, not a photocopy or a phone, and be over 18. The rooms refuse shorts, ripped jeans, sportswear, trainers, vests and beachwear; after 7 T-shirts and sweatshirts go too.

What changed recently

Mareterra, the six-hectare district built out into the sea between the Grimaldi Forum and Larvotto, was inaugurated on 4 December 2024 and opened to the public on 5 December. Its promenade extends the seafront walk from Le Méridien Beach Plaza and Monte-Carlo Bay towards the casino, with 9,400 square metres of gardens. One Monte-Carlo, the Société des Bains de Mer's shopping district between the Hermitage and the Place du Casino, inaugurated on 22 February 2019 with 24 boutiques around the Promenade Princesse Charlène, is what the square now looks like from the Hôtel de Paris.

At the hotels, the Métropole closed for the winter of 2024 to 2025 and reopened on 2 May 2025 in the middle of a rebuild: its October 2025 announcement delivered 45 Jacques Garcia rooms and suites on the second and third floors and says the work continues floor by floor, with no end date given, so ask what is being renovated in your week. Monte-Carlo Beach's own 2026 press kit describes a revitalisation begun in 2024 and running to 2027, with Le Deck and the pool area redone, a Jacquemus-designed jetty and two new padel courts. Monte-Carlo Bay's spa has carried the Clarins and myBlend brands since 4 April 2025. The Fairmont's site says its rooms are newly renovated; trade reports date the finish to the end of 2024. Smaller, but it catches people: the airport bus is line 80 on the operator's timetable, and the Société des Bains de Mer's own transport page and the Columbus still call it line 110.
