Le Méridien Beach Plaza

Le Méridien Beach Plaza has one thing nobody else in the principality can match: its own private beach, plus a heated indoor pool and four outdoor seawater basins, on the Larvotto seafront. If your Monaco trip is really a beach trip, that decides it. It opened in 1972 at 22 Avenue Princesse Grace, when Larvotto was being built out as Monaco's seaside quarter, and it has the bones of that decade, a long block turned to the Mediterranean. Marriott runs it as a Le Méridien now, and a refurbishment dated to 2018 has worked through the rooms category by category rather than all at once, which matters more than the year.

Everything else is what you would expect from a large, well-run international hotel: about 400 rooms, a busy breakfast, a conference centre and a spot on Avenue Princesse Grace that is a 19-minute walk from the casino square. Rooms are sold as Classic, Deluxe, Design, Premium and Superior, with suites above them, and what is worth paying for is the sea and a balcony. The conference side is not hidden: the Sea Club runs to 3,000 square metres over four levels and fourteen halls, connected straight to the hotel, and you will know when it is full.

The beach is the point. It sits inside the Larvotto Marine Reserve, shaded by maritime pines and lifeguarded April to September, with the Alang bar open for the same months. The outdoor pools are heated sea water, four basins including two shallow ones for children, from April into the autumn. The indoor pool is heated fresh water and open all year, which is what makes a November stay work. Laurent Colin has been executive chef since 2014 and runs both restaurants: L'Intempo, the year-round room, now Italian, and Muse, which opens in summer under the pines facing the water. Wellness is modest by Monaco standards, a gym, a sauna, treatments through L'Institut by MWS and classes in Studio 22.

The pattern in guest feedback is clear and consistent. Praise goes to the beach, the sea-view rooms and balconies, and the pool area, which makes summer with children easy. The complaints are about consistency. Some rooms have been refurbished and some have not, the breakfast room is overwhelmed in peak weeks, and the hotel can be dominated by conference groups out of season. The private beach is small and pebbly, because this is Monaco and not the Caribbean. It suits families in summer, beach-first travellers and anyone who wants a private stretch of sea without paying grand-hotel money. It is not a special-occasion hotel, and it does not pretend to be. Check which rooms have been renovated before you book, and ask for the sea.
