What we looked for

Monaco is small, safe and walkable, which helps with children, and the government's 79 public lifts, 35 escalators and 8 travelators do much of the climbing for small legs. Under-fives ride the CAM buses free. For beach days, stay at Larvotto, the seaside end of Avenue Princesse Grace, where the beach is largely public with a promenade along it and both of our hotels are built around water. Monte-Carlo puts the harbour, the casino gardens and the grand hotels on foot instead.

Kids' clubs here follow the calendar, so match the club to your dates. In July and August, Fairmont Monte Carlo and Le Méridien Beach Plaza run free clubs for ages 4 to 12 and Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo one for 4 to 10; Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo opens its Kids Room in French school holidays except February. Then look hard at room size: entry rooms at the grand hotels are small, and connecting rooms or a family suite matter more than the view.

Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort gives children a resort in a principality of grand hotels. The sand-bottomed lagoon is open from May to September, a heated indoor pool with jacuzzis and an outdoor pool at 28 degrees run all year, and a guarded swimming area lies in the marine reserve just off the hotel's shore, with Larvotto beach a few minutes' walk. Every room category is 44 square metres with a terrace, so even the entry rooms have space.

Children of five and under eat free from the children's menu, and six to eleven at half price. In summer the Monte-Carlo Kids Club by Petit VIP takes guests aged 4 to 12 while a parent stays on the property; its next season is planned for summer 2027. Miami Plage, a family beach restaurant since 1975, is nine minutes' walk.

Le Méridien Beach Plaza puts its own beach at the foot of the lift. The pebble beach on the Larvotto seafront is lifeguarded from April to September, two of the four heated seawater basins are for young children, and the heated indoor pool stays open all year, with under-16s swimming alongside an adult. In July and August the Kids Club takes children aged 4 to 12 free of charge, from 10am to 6pm every day.

For space, the hotel has connecting Deluxe and Premium rooms, and larger families can take Apartment 915: three en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen and three balconies for up to seven, with valet parking included. The public beach at Larvotto is next door.

Fairmont Monte Carlo suits families who want Monte-Carlo on foot. Its Little Explorers Club is free for guests' children aged 4 to 12 from 1 July to 31 August, and every room grade is 35 square metres with a private terrace, the entry Garden View coming as a king or two doubles. The casino is a five-minute walk uphill, with the harbour below and the public beach at Larvotto about ten minutes along the shore.

The seventh-floor deck has two pools. From April to October one of them is Nikki Beach, with DJs and an over-18 bed area, so swim at Amù by the Pool, open from 8am to 8pm to all ages and daily from early June. With 596 rooms, it is also the hotel most likely to have space on a busy weekend.

The Monte-Carlo Kids Club by Petit VIP takes children aged 4 to 12, daily in July and August, and a stay includes access at set times, with paid lunch and afternoon sessions and a parent staying at the club. The rest of the family has an Olympic-length seawater pool heated to 28 degrees and a short strip of fine sand.

It is a small hotel of 40 rooms, and space is what to plan for: the entry rooms are 30 square metres, so a family of three starts at the Junior Suite, and connecting Loft Suites can be joined on request. The season runs from mid-April to mid-October, and every room faces the sea.

Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo is for a family that wants a calm grand hotel rather than a resort. Behind its own gates, a street back from the casino square, it has a Family Suite: a junior suite for the parents connected to a room designed for children up to 10, with its own bathroom. In July and August its Kids Club is free for guests aged 4 to 10, run by two activity leaders from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6.30pm.

Karl Lagerfeld's Odyssey terrace has a seawater pool heated all year and open from 7am to 8pm, and from April to September Zia cooks Italian beside it, from breakfast to dinner. There is one Family Suite category, on one floor, so book it early. For a quick supper, Tip Top has been serving pizza and burgers two minutes away since 1938.

How do you get around Monaco with children?

On foot, by lift and by bus. The government counts 79 public lifts, 35 escalators and 8 travelators, which take much of the climbing out of Monaco's terraces. CAM buses cost 1.50 euros a ride by contactless card, capped at 5.50 euros a day, and under-fives ride free. Buses 5 and 6 link Larvotto with the Place du Casino, and the Bateau Bus crosses the harbour in four minutes on the same fare. Inside the principality there is no need for a car.
