Which room to book at Monte-Carlo Beach

The Junior Suite, sea view. Every category in the building faces the sea, so the money above the entry room buys floor area rather than a view, and the 50 square metre Junior Suite with a lounge area and a loggia is where a room becomes somewhere you would spend a wet afternoon. Ask for the second floor.

Why this one

The ladder at Monte-Carlo Beach is unusual for Monaco in that the view is not for sale. Every one of the eight categories on the hotel's own pages carries the words sea view, from the 30 square metre Exclusive Room to Villa La Vigie on the point, so what you pay for as you climb is floor area, outdoor space and floor level, in that order. The two entry rooms are the same 30 square metres with a 4.5 square metre loggia; the Junior Suite is 50 square metres with a lounge area and a loggia on the first and second floors, and it is the first room in the building with somewhere to sit that is not the bed. In a hotel where the day is pool, lunch, beach, room, dinner, that lounge is used.

Above it the steps are honest but expensive in the way suites are. The Exclusive Junior Suite adds ten square metres and a separate sitting area, at the price of some units being on the ground floor. The Loft Suite is 70 square metres on the second floor only, with two loggias; the Duplex is 100 over two floors; the Diamond Suite Sunshine is 90 square metres plus a 100 square metre roof terrace with a jacuzzi, and is the only category with a cabana at the club in the rate, and, with Villa La Vigie, one of two that include breakfast and the airport transfer. The Junior Suite is the point on the ladder where the extra floor area is still the whole of what you are paying for.

Ask for
Ask for the second floor, the higher of the two the Junior Suite category occupies, for a longer line of sight over the pool deck to the bay and a floor between you and the beach club during the day. If you are two people who will be in the room in the afternoons, say so when you book, because the lounge is the reason for the category and the hotel's page gives the loggia as the room's only outdoor space.
Avoid
Skip the Exclusive Superior if privacy matters: its selling point is a ground-floor loggia with steps straight down to the La Vigie promenade, which is also a path other people walk along. In the Exclusive Junior Suite category, which the hotel spreads over the ground, first and second floors and describes as facing the sea and the pine forest, specify an upper floor for the same reason. The Exclusive Room is fine if you will only sleep in it, and not otherwise.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out. The Duplex Suite, 100 square metres over the first and second floors with a panoramic loggia that the hotel's page says looks at the sea, the beach and the pool, is the room the hotel describes as ideal for a honeymoon, and for once the description matches the plan. The Diamond Suite Sunshine is the other: two bedrooms and two bathrooms for five, a 100 square metre roof terrace with a jacuzzi on the second floor, and the only category with a private cabana in season in the rate; breakfast, a round-trip transfer from Nice airport (one per stay) and the resort limousine come with it too, as they do with Villa La Vigie. If you were going to buy a cabana anyway, price that in before you dismiss it.

Villa La Vigie, 600 square metres over three levels on the point with six bedrooms, a 237 square metre terrace, a 14 metre heated pool and a butler, is let whole and is a different product; it is on this ladder because the hotel sells it.
