Why this one

The bottom of the ladder is three rooms of almost the same kind. The Plaza King is 475 sq ft (44 m²) and the Deluxe King 550 sq ft (51 m²), both on floors 5 to 19, both over the courtyard or 58th Street, both with the mosaic bathroom and the 24-carat gold-plated Sherle Wagner fixtures, and on a Tuesday in late January they were $1,375 and $1,395. The Terrace Room King is the Deluxe King's floor area again at $1,455, and the $80 over the entry room buys the one thing nothing else below the suites has: a private 100 sq ft (9 m²) terrace over the landscaped courtyard and its reflecting pool, on the fifth or ninth floor. It is not a park view, and nothing at this price is, but it is outdoor space of your own in Midtown, and it takes a rollaway bed, which the Plaza King does not.

Above it the ladder buys space before it buys views. The Grand Luxe and the Junior Suite add floor area and a wet bar without a stated outlook, and the first rooms that look at anything you would photograph are the Pulitzer suites over Fifth Avenue at $2,495 and the Carnegie suites, with part of the park, at $2,695.

Ask for
Ask for a Terrace Room King with a soaking tub as well as the shower: most have both, but not all. The terraces are on the fifth and ninth floors only. If you book a Carnegie suite for the park, ask which floor sees the most of it, because the view changes from floor to floor.
Avoid
The Plaza King and Deluxe King if you are hoping to see the park, since both face the courtyard or 58th Street, as do the Terrace Room King and the Deluxe Two Queens. For three people, price the Junior Suite King before the Deluxe Two Queens: it has a king bed and a queen sofa bed and was $20 less on the same night. For four or more, the Family Grand Luxe Two Queens was only $50 more than the Deluxe Two Queens, with 180 sq ft more, a soaking tub and a powder room.

Suites against rooms

Two suites are worth singling out. The Pulitzer Fifth Avenue One Bedroom Suite King is the cheapest way to wake up to a view: Fifth Avenue and the Pulitzer Fountain from 900 to 1,000 sq ft (84 to 93 m²), one suite a floor from the 12th to the 18th, at $2,495 on the late-January Tuesday. That is $200 less than the Carnegie, whose park view is partial, as its name says. If a view is what you are paying for, the Pulitzer's is the whole of what it promises.

The other is the Tower Room, a single round bedroom in a corner turret on the 18th floor, with a round bed under a 23-foot exposed brick ceiling and Fifth Avenue below. At about 550 sq ft (51 m²) it is a room rather than a suite, and it carried no rate for the January night. It can also be joined to a Pulitzer suite and a Deluxe King as the Tower Three Bedroom Suite, one of the connecting combinations, from the Connecting Deluxe to the two-bedroom Edwardian and Carnegie suites, that the hotel books only by phone or email.

Our verdict

Book The Plaza to sleep inside the château on the corner of Central Park, take tea in the Palm Court and be in the park before breakfast. Pay the small step to a Terrace Room King, and keep the park view for a suite budget, since even the Carnegie suites see it only in part.
