Where to stay in Orlando: eight areas, who each suits, and where our hotels sit

In Orlando the parks you plan to do decide where you sleep: Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando are separate resorts 23 to 30 minutes apart by car off-peak, each with its own hotels, transport and perks for the guests who stay with it. Here are the eight areas worth weighing, in the order a first-time visitor should weigh them, who each suits and what it costs you, with each of our ten hotels placed in the area it actually sits in.

The short answer

For a first Disney trip, stay in the Magic Kingdom area on Seven Seas Lagoon: from the Grand Floridian, the Resort Monorail reaches Magic Kingdom in one stop and Disney's walking path takes 19 minutes, and Orlando International is 39 minutes away by car off-peak. For a Universal-first trip, stay at Universal Orlando itself, where the water taxi from Loews Portofino Bay lands at CityWalk, 3 minutes' walk from Universal Studios Florida's gate, free buses run to Epic Universe, and the airport is 28 minutes away by car off-peak.

Walt Disney World: the Magic Kingdom area

Seven Seas Lagoon and the monorail loop: Magic Kingdom one stop away, its fireworks across the water, Epcot a change of monorail away and the other parks a Disney bus ride off.

Round Magic Kingdom, Disney's Resort Monorail loops between the park, the Transportation and Ticket Center, the Contemporary, the Polynesian Village and the Grand Floridian; water taxis cross Seven Seas Lagoon to the gates, and the fireworks go up across the water.

From the Grand Floridian's main building, the monorail reaches Magic Kingdom in one stop, four on the way back, and Epcot with one change, and the walking path takes 19 minutes. The rest are a Disney bus or a drive: off-peak, Epcot's car park is 14 minutes, Disney Springs 18, Hollywood Studios 19, Universal about half an hour and Orlando International 39.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the lagoon's Victorian grand hotel and the Magic Kingdom base for young children, starts at about $855 a night before 12.5% tax on an early-February Tuesday, with no resort fee, free self-parking, early entry every day and Extended Evening Hours on select nights. Four Seasons Resort Orlando is here but not on the monorail, in Golden Oak, Disney's private community east of Fort Wilderness, as near by car to Epcot as to Magic Kingdom: free coaches once an hour to each park, early entry but not the evening hours, and a lazy river, slides and a kids' club, from about $1,395 on a January Tuesday plus a resort fee and valet.

Walt Disney World: the Epcot area and the BoardWalk

Crescent Lake behind Epcot's back gate: two parks on foot, by boat or by gondola, and dinner on the BoardWalk.

Crescent Lake lies behind Epcot's International Gateway, with Disney's Yacht Club and Beach Club on one shore and the BoardWalk Inn and Disney's BoardWalk entertainment district on the other.

From the Yacht Club's entrance, the International Gateway and its Skyliner station are 9 minutes' walk and the BoardWalk Inn 10, and the lakeside path reaches Hollywood Studios in 26. Disney's FriendShip boats run from the resorts' docks to both parks, and the Skyliner links them. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are Disney bus rides; off-peak, Magic Kingdom's car park is 15 minutes by car, Universal 26 and Orlando International 38.

Disney's Yacht Club Resort is the pool pick: Stormalong Bay, the three-acre pool complex it shares with the Beach Club, has a sand-bottomed pool, a lazy river and a 230-foot-long slide from a shipwreck's mast, for guests of the two hotels and the Beach Club Villas only. Rooms start at about $655 a night before 12.5% tax on an early-February Tuesday, with no resort fee, free self-parking, early entry every day and Extended Evening Hours on select nights. Exterior work runs through late 2026 at the Yacht Club and late 2027 at the Beach Club, and the Skyliner closes from 24 to 30 January 2027. The Disney Skyliner is Walt Disney World's gondola system, linking Epcot's International Gateway and Hollywood Studios with four Disney hotels with stations: the Riviera, Caribbean Beach, Art of Animation and Pop Century. Pop Century and Art of Animation face each other across Hourglass Lake and share a station on the bridge between them.

From Classic Hall, Pop Century's lobby, the station is 5 minutes on foot. Gondolas run from an hour before Early Theme Park Entry at Epcot or Hollywood Studios until 90 minutes after closing, and close for refurbishment from 24 to 30 January 2027, with buses instead. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are Disney bus rides from outside Classic Hall. Off-peak by car, Hollywood Studios' car park is 10 minutes, Epcot's 14 and Orlando International 34.

Disney's Pop Century Resort has the cheapest room at any of the four Skyliner hotels on Disney's standard rates, $195 a night before 12.5% tax on an early-February Tuesday against $231 at Art of Animation, with no resort fee, free self-parking and early entry every day, though not the Deluxe resorts' Extended Evening Hours. Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge stands in the south-west of Walt Disney World, near the Animal Kingdom park: a thatched game lodge built in a horseshoe round the Arusha Savanna, with the villas of Kidani Village a short walk away.

There is no monorail, boat or Skyliner. Disney's buses run to every theme park and Disney Springs, from 45 minutes before opening until an hour after closing; the water parks take a change of bus. Off-peak by car, Animal Kingdom's car park is 6 minutes, Hollywood Studios' 16, Disney Springs 17 and Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center 18, with the monorail or ferry still to take. Universal Studios is 26 minutes and Orlando International 39.

The Lodge keeps more than 200 hoofed animals and birds on 43 acres of savanna, and only the Savanna View rooms look onto one of the savannas, where giraffes and antelope graze: $740 a night before 12.5% tax on an early-February Tuesday, against $527 for a Resort View over rooftops or the car park. There is no resort fee, self-parking is free, and early entry every day and Extended Evening Hours on select nights come with the room. Questions people ask

Good questions about Orlando

Where is the best place to stay in Orlando for Disney?

For a first trip, the Magic Kingdom area on Seven Seas Lagoon. From Disney's Grand Floridian the Resort Monorail reaches Magic Kingdom in one stop, water taxis cross the lagoon and the walking path takes 19 minutes, from about $855 a night before tax. For Epcot and Hollywood Studios, the Yacht Club is 9 minutes' walk from Epcot's International Gateway, from about $655. On a budget, Pop Century is 5 minutes' walk from a Skyliner station, from about $195. All three include Early Theme Park Entry every day and free self-parking, with no resort fee.

Is it better to stay on Disney property?

For a Disney-first trip, usually yes. Guests at Disney's own hotels, and at 15 other select hotels, the Four Seasons among them, enter the theme parks 30 minutes early every day of the stay, and the Deluxe resorts, including the Grand Floridian, the Yacht Club and Animal Kingdom Lodge, add Extended Evening Hours on select nights. Disney's buses, monorail, boats and Skyliner are free, overnight self-parking is free, and standard theme park parking, $35 a day for everyone else, is included. The catch is price at our three Deluxe picks, from about $525 to $855 a night before tax, and Universal is 23 to 30 minutes away by car off-peak.

Where to stay in Orlando for Universal and Epic Universe?

At Universal itself. Loews Portofino Bay's water taxi lands at CityWalk, 3 minutes' walk from Universal Studios Florida's gate and 5 from Islands of Adventure's, and the room key is Universal Express Unlimited at most rides in both parks, from about $795 a night. Universal Cabana Bay, from about $180, has suites for six and buses every 15 minutes to CityWalk and Epic Universe. For Epic Universe first, Universal Helios Grand has its own gate into the park off the lobby for guests with a park ticket, from about $580. Every Universal hotel guest gets Early Park Admission, and Express Unlimited is not valid at Epic Universe.

Where to stay in Orlando for both Disney and Universal?

Split the stay if you can: Universal's hotels for the Universal days, then a Disney hotel for the Disney days, so each block comes with its own early entry and transport. The two resorts are 23 to 30 minutes apart by car off-peak. From one base, Grande Lakes sits between them: from The Ritz-Carlton, off-peak by car, Epic Universe's car park is 14 minutes, Disney Springs 18 and Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center 27, and the resort fee covers a shuttle to both resorts, booked 24 hours ahead. Neither resort's early entry comes with that room.

Do you need a car in Orlando?

Not for a trip at one resort. Disney's buses, monorail, boats and Skyliner are free for Disney hotel guests, and Mears Connect's shared shuttle runs from the airport to every Disney-owned hotel, $17.60 an adult from the airport and $16 back, plus a 6% fuel surcharge. Universal's hotels have free buses, and some have water taxis. A car earns its keep for both resorts and for Grande Lakes and Winter Park. Overnight parking is free at a Disney hotel, $26 to $36 a night at our three Universal hotels, and valet only at the Ritz-Carlton ($58), The Alfond Inn (from $37) and the Four Seasons.
