Where to eat at and around 1872 River House

You are at the western end of Ribeira, one terrace above the quay, with the Palácio da Bolsa at the end of the block. The house has no restaurant, only its breakfast room, and you will not need a car or a taxi: everything below is within seven minutes on foot. The quayside terraces are the obvious choice and mostly the weakest; the exceptions are a wine bar on the quay itself, the tables just behind it on Rua da Fonte Taurina and the lanes up to Largo de São Domingos.

    3 min walk

Modern Portuguese inside the Bolsa · €€€

The dining room of the Palácio da Bolsa, at the end of the block, with big windows over the Douro and the port lodges on the Gaia bank. The kitchen calls itself progressive Portuguese, and the reason to go is the weekly suggestion menu: three courses for 25 euros, served 12:30 to 14:00 and 19:30 to 21:30. Its own site gives lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, dinner only on Monday, and Sunday closed.

  • Wine Quay Bar

    3 min walk

    Wine bar facing the Douro

By its own account the first wine bar to open in Porto, on the quay with the Douro in front of the tables. It pours Portuguese and international wines with boards of cheese, cured meats and conserves, which is supper enough after a long lunch, and it takes no reservations, so go early for a table by the river. Its own site gives Monday to Saturday, 16:00 to 23:00 in summer and 15:00 to 22:00 in winter.

  • Family-run Portuguese kitchen since 1984 · €€

A family restaurant since 1984, in an old stone house beside the one surviving postern of Porto's medieval Fernandine wall, which gives it its name. Bacalhau, octopus, roast kid and the day's fish, plus the two Porto classics, tripe and the francesinha, both under 18 euros; most single mains run from 15 to 26. Its own site gives lunch 12:00 to 15:00 and dinner 18:00 to 23:00 every day of the year. Book at weekends and for dinner.

    6 min walk

    Rui Paula's Michelin-starred dining room · €€€€

The splurge, six minutes up the lanes in the Palácio das Artes on Largo de São Domingos. Rui Paula's restaurant won its Michelin star in the 2026 guide, one of four new stars in Porto that year, and its own site describes a wine list running to hundreds of references. The same site gives dinner from 19:00 to 23:30, with Sunday and Monday closed, so plan it for Tuesday to Saturday.

Book well ahead: tables go weeks outLargo de São Domingos 16

  • Open-fire cooking, northern Portuguese produce · €€€

Nuno Mendes, whose career runs through London, is the chef behind this intimate room on the square, where northern Portuguese ingredients are cooked over fire in an open kitchen. It is in the Michelin Guide's 2026 selection without a star, and a notch below dop on the guide's price scale. Its own site gives dinner every day from 18:00 to midnight and lunch Wednesday to Sunday, 12:30 to 15:00.

Reserve aheadLargo de São Domingos 62

  • José Avillez's relaxed Porto canteen · €€€

The one to remember on a Sunday or a Monday, when dop is shut: its own site gives 12:30 to 23:00 every day, with no afternoon break, so a late lunch after the port lodges works too. It is the Porto outpost of the Lisbon chef behind Belcanto, in his lighter register; the flaked bacalhau with migas and exploding olives, at 23.75 euros, is on the restaurant's own list of most-ordered dishes.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 in the living room, facing the Douro. The hotel describes a wide spread of bakery and pastries, most of it homemade, and guests also mention local cheeses and eggs cooked to order. The hotel's page says it is always included, but the house also sells room-only rates, so check what your rate includes. Otherwise, Nata Lisboa on Rua das Flores, 11 minutes uphill, opens at 9 every day.

What to skip

The terraces on the Cais da Ribeira with picture menus and someone at the door waving you in. You would be paying for a view of the river you already had at breakfast, and everything above is a few minutes' walk behind the quay or up the lanes.

For the river outside the window at the lowest price in this edit, this is the one. Book a river room, pack for a guesthouse and spend the difference in the city.
