1872 River House

1872 River House is a guesthouse, not a hotel, and that is the point. It occupies a restored townhouse at number 133 on Rua do Infante D. Henrique, the road that runs a terrace above the Ribeira quays, with the Igreja de São Francisco and the Palácio da Bolsa at the end of the block, the quays a few steps away and the Dom Luís I bridge in view from the river rooms. The house dates from 1872, which is where the name comes from. A fire gutted the interior, and the rebuild was finished in 2014. It is run today by Olivia Singular Houses. Eight rooms, a breakfast room facing the water, an owner-run team that guests keep singling out for going beyond what a small place needs to do, and rates well below what the same outlook costs across the river.

There are only two categories, Superior Room with River View and Charm Room with City View, and choosing between them is most of the decision. The rooms carry the 2014 rebuild well: stone and brick walls, bathrooms with vintage decor and a shower, individual layouts rather than a template. They are compact, 17 square metres for a Charm room and 20 for a Superior, with little storage, and half of them face the street rather than the river. There is a lift and air conditioning throughout.

Breakfast is the other reason people come back, with cheeses, cured meats, homemade pastries and eggs cooked to order, but it is not in every rate: book one that includes it. Beyond that there is nothing on site: no restaurant, no spa, no pool, no car park. What you get instead is the position. You can be on the Cais da Ribeira in three or four minutes and over the bridge to the Gaia port lodges inside fifteen.

Treat it as a base for a first or second Porto trip where the money goes on the city instead of the hotel. The trade is Ribeira itself: lively into the evening, loud on summer weekends and festival nights, and no car, spa or restaurant to retreat to. The house offers ear plugs on request, which is a fair signal about what the street does after dark. Summer reviews also raise air conditioning failures, so it is worth testing the unit on the first night rather than the third. If you can live with all of that, the window does the rest.
