Why this one
The Superior Deluxe Panoramic is where the ladder reaches the hotel in the photographs. The hotel sells it only on floors 5, 6 and 7, and every one has a furnished private terrace looking over the Douro to the old town, a deep soaking tub and a separate walk-in shower, underfloor heating in the marble bathroom and whitewashed shutters that open the bath to the view. What you pay for is height and the river. The hotel publishes no floor area for any of its rooms, so if space matters as much as the view, ask for the size when you book.
The ladder is shaped by view and floor. The Executive Rooms and the plain Suites sit low in the east wing, two lifts from the main building, and both are sold with Porto or the gardens outside; the Superiors climb to floors 4 to 7 but promise Porto and the gardens rather than the river panorama. From the Suite Deluxe Panoramic up, everything is sold with the Douro and Porto in view except the three Master Suites Garden on floor 4, which look over Porto and the gardens. From the Master Suites up, the money also buys inclusions: a free minibar and no room service fee, and in the three named suites a personal bar with wine, spirits and champagne. Breakfast is not in every rate, so read the rate description before you pay; adding it later costs 45 euros a person.
- Ask for
- Every Superior Deluxe Panoramic has a furnished terrace, so the choice is the floor. The outdoor pool is on floor 5, and the hotel says guests on the pool's floor can walk from their terrace to it: ask for the 5th if you want that between April and October, and the 6th or 7th if you would rather not share your floor with the pool. Choose a rate that includes breakfast, and if a child is coming, ask for a room that connects to a second Superior Deluxe or a Suite Deluxe, which the hotel offers on request and subject to confirmation.
- Avoid
- A garden-facing Executive or Superior Room if the view is why you chose the hotel: neither category is sold with the river panorama, and the Executives are on floors 1 to 3 of the east wing, two lifts from the main building. Skip the plain Suite for the same reason. It puts you back in that wing on floors 1 and 2, with Porto or the gardens outside rather than the river, and two of its four named suites have a balcony rather than a terrace.
Suites against rooms
Two parts of the suite ladder are worth a closer look. The Suite Deluxe Panoramic adds a living room to the river view, but its eight named suites on floors 3 to 7 differ more than the category name suggests: Bacalhôa has a furnished balcony rather than a terrace, Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas is on the 3rd floor of the east wing, two lifts from the main building, and both it and Altas Quintas, on floor 4, have terraces that open onto the gardens, with the outdoor pool on floor 5 within reach. Ask for the suite by name. At the top, the Artist has the 12 metre terrace and a fireplace on the 7th floor, and the Bacchus a conservatory, a round bath beside a fireplace and a bed that turns to the view on the 9th; it is also the only suite that takes pets. Both, like the Presidential, come with city transfers in the hotel's English cab on request.
For families, the hotel's terms allow one child, on an extra bed or a cot, in a Superior Deluxe and two in a Suite Deluxe, and the hotel describes two of the plain Suites, Barbeito and Falua, as sleeping two adults and two children. There is an unsupervised Kids Club for ages 3 to 16, and babysitting can be booked in advance.

Our verdict
If Porto for you means port, the Douro and a terrace to drink it on, this is the hotel that was built for exactly that. Accept the hill and the taxi, and book the panoramic category.
