The take

The Yeatman sits among the port lodges on the south bank, and the whole building is stepped down the slope so that every room and terrace looks across the Douro at Porto. It is owned by The Fladgate Partnership, the family behind Taylor's, Fonseca and Croft, and wine runs through everything: rooms are themed by Portuguese producers, the cellar is one of the deepest in the country, and the outdoor infinity pool is shaped like a decanter.

The restaurant is the other reason to come. Ricardo Costa has cooked here since it opened in 2010 and holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide for a single Portuguese tasting menu called Origins, served Tuesday to Saturday in a dining room with the city laid out below. The Wine Spa has ten treatment rooms and an indoor pool kept at about 30 degrees; the outdoor pool runs from April to October.

The trade is the hill. Ribeira is a 20 to 30 minute walk down, and most people take a taxi back up. Guest feedback is consistent about the view, the breakfast and the staff, and just as consistent that some rooms are showing their age for the rate.

The room to book: Superior Deluxe Panoramic Room

The entry Executive Rooms sit on floors 1 to 3 of the east wing with city or garden views, and Superior Rooms on floors 4 to 7 may face the gardens. The Superior Deluxe Panoramic is the first category the hotel sells on a furnished private terrace with the full panorama of Porto and the Douro, plus a soaking tub and a walk-in shower with a city view.

Ask for
Floors 5, 6 and 7 are the whole category, so there is no floor to request; ask for a terrace rather than a balcony, and confirm the river side when you book.
Avoid
A garden-facing Executive or Superior Room if the view is the reason you chose this hotel; the hotel sells both categories with either Porto or garden outlooks.
