Fish and seafood at WOW
The seafood room of the WOW district, four minutes down the road, and the place to eat the Portuguese coast rather than the Douro. Order the mariscada, which comes on a two-tier platter running from Ria de Aveiro oysters to clams à Bulhão Pato. Its own page gives every day from 10:30 to 23:00, which makes it the easy answer on the Sunday and Monday nights when the hotel's two-star room is closed.

Portuguese comfort food and francesinha
WOW's traditional Portuguese room, and the simplest place near the hotel to try a francesinha, made here with a Port wine sauce and in a vegetarian version as well. The rest of the menu is Sunday-lunch comfort cooking, served inside or on a terrace looking across at Porto. Its own page gives every day from 12:00 to 22:00 and room for 160, the most of the three at WOW, so it is the likeliest to seat you without a booking.

Dry-aged steakhouse with Port pairings
A steakhouse built around dry-aged cuts, in a period dining room that looks across the river at Porto. Eat à la carte or take the tasting menu, and choose the pairing of young Vintage Ports over the still wines if you want to taste what the lodges around you are for. Breakfast comes only with the rates that say so, and the hotel itself advises checking the rate description when you book. If yours leaves it out, the hotel's breakfast page quotes 45 euros a person, subject to availability, so compare that with the rate that includes it before you pay. It is served every day from 07:30 to 10:30 in The Orangerie and Winter Garden or out on the terrace, with eggs cooked to order, pancakes and bread baked daily in the kitchen. The nearest alternative is Suspiro, the pastry and coffee shop at WOW five minutes away, and it does not open until 10:00.
The obvious plan, dinner on the Ribeira quay across the river, is the one to think twice about. It is 21 minutes down on foot and the same distance back uphill after a long dinner, and everything on this page is closer. If you do cross, book the taxi home before you order.
