Most day trips to Pompeii from Rome are coach trips: twelve hours or more, six to eight of them on the motorway. This one takes the high-speed train to Naples, about 70 minutes, and a private air-conditioned vehicle on to the ruins, 30 minutes. You are walking down a Roman street by mid-morning.
Inside, the guided tour runs for two and a half hours, on the cart-rutted streets, typically through the forum, the baths, the bakeries with their millstones, the brothel with its frescoes, and the plaster casts of the people caught by the eruption of AD 79. Then 15 minutes to a prize-winning vineyard on the slopes of Vesuvius, for a tasting of four of its wines and a long, light lunch: antipasti, a first course and dessert, about two hours in all. The driver takes you back to Naples for the train home, and the day ends where it began, at Caffè Vergnano in Roma Termini, about nine hours later.
The price, from about 160 euros, includes both trains, the transfers, the Pompeii ticket with skip-the-ticket-line entry, the guide, the wine and the lunch. Pompeii's own ticket starts at 20 euros for the express route and 25 for Pompeii+.
Why this one
It was rated 4.8 from about 800 reviews, with the guides, the transport and the value all scored between 4.8 and 4.9. That is a smaller pool than the coach trips, and a better score. The cheapest Pompeii trip from Rome on GetYourGuide is 68 euros by coach, with Vesuvius; the best-selling one, at about 11,000 reviews and 4.6, packs in the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento and so spends even more time on the road.
If you can manage trains and timed tickets on your own, Pompeii is easy to do independently. This is for the day you want to hand over: someone else's tickets, someone else's driver, and lunch under a vine.

The catch
Pompeii is hot and has no shade
In the five summers we looked at, the afternoon high near Pompeii had a median of 31.2°C in July and 30.8°C in August, and guests in the reviews say the heat and humidity spoiled the walk for them.
What to do. From June to September carry water, a hat and sun cream, and choose spring or autumn if you can.
Be at Termini 30 minutes early
The train is booked for your group. The meeting point is Caffè Vergnano on the departures level at Roma Termini, in the shops facing platform 1, half an hour before the departure.
What to do. Allow time to cross Termini: it is big and busy.
Not possible in a wheelchair
The operator says the route and transport rule out wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility aids, and Pompeii's paving is uneven and rutted.
What to do. Ask the operator about an adapted private tour.
Small bags only
Pompeii does not allow bags larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm into the site.
What to do. Carry a day bag and leave the rest at the hotel.
