Michelangelo designed the dome of St Peter's in his seventies and did not live to see it closed; Giacomo della Porta finished it in 1590. Climbing it is two experiences in one. Halfway up you walk out onto the ring inside the drum, with the basilica's floor far below and the mosaic letters around the dome, each taller than a person, close enough to touch. Then you climb between the inner and outer shells, the walls leaning in as you go, to the lantern at the top and a terrace that looks down on St Peter's Square, the Vatican Gardens and the whole of Rome.
There are two ways up. The lift takes you to the roof level, saving 231 steps; from there it is 320 more on foot either way, narrow and steep at the end. The stairs-only route is 551. The basilica's own site sells both with a timed slot, and the ticket includes the basilica with its digital audio guide, scheduled an hour before or after your dome time.
This ticket from Get Your Roman Tours costs 22 euros. It includes the dome climb, access to the basilica and the papal tombs, an audio guide on your phone in 15 languages, and a host who meets you at Via Germanico 36, near Ottaviano metro, and walks you to the dome entrance. The visit runs two to two and a half hours.
Why this one
It is the dome ticket with the most reviews on GetYourGuide, about 2,400, rated 4.5, and the operator is unusually frank about what it is: a ticket and an audio guide, no live guide, no headphones and no skip-the-line. What it adds over the official ticket is the audio guide on the climb itself, in many more languages, and someone to get you to the right door.
The basilica's own site sells the dome with a timed slot, by lift or stairs, with the basilica and its audio guide included, and it is the place to start if you know your way around Vatican City and do not need the host.

The catch
It does not skip security
Everyone entering St Peter's goes through the security check in the square, and the operator warns that since October 2026 the wait has been reaching two to three hours at busy times, plus 20 to 25 minutes to collect dome tickets.
What to do. Take the first slot of the day: the dome opens at 7.30am from late October, 7am in summer, and the line is shortest then.
Not for everyone
The last 320 steps are narrow, steep and one-way, with the walls leaning in. The operator lists the climb as unsuitable for pregnant women, wheelchair users and people over 70.
What to do. If you are claustrophobic or unsure, take the lift and stop at the inner ring: the view down into the basilica is the half most people remember.
Dress for a church
No shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops, in the basilica or on the dome.
What to do. Cover shoulders and knees, and bring a passport or ID.
Bring your own earphones
The audio guide runs on your phone and the operator does not provide headphones.
What to do. Charge your phone and bring earphones.
