Which room to book at Hacienda del Conde

The Singular Junior Suite Sea View with Panoramic Terrace. It is the same 55 square metres as the entry Premier Room, but it is the category the hotel itself describes as having the most privileged views in the house from its private terrace, and on a ladder where every rung below the suites is the same size, the view is the only thing you are paying for.

The first rung with the Atlantic in the window. Ask that it is not the range netting.

Why this one

The ladder here is unusually flat. On the hotel's own room pages the Premier Room, the Singular Junior Suite, the Golf View, the Garden and both Sea View categories are all 55 square metres, all with a terrace and connecting rooms available, and none of them states a floor. The bed line varies a little: four rungs are sold with a double or two singles, while the Garden and Panoramic Terrace rungs are listed with one double and two singles, and melia.com lists a shower and a bathtub for the Premier, the plain Junior Suite, the Golf View and the Sea View but only a shower for the other two. That aside, the six rungs below the suites differ only in what the terrace faces: garden, fairways or sea. The hotel's own text calls the Sea View rooms some of the most beautiful views in the hotel and gives the Panoramic Terrace rung its most privileged views. Guests consistently single out the ocean-facing rooms and describe the golf-facing ones as losing the drama. If you are going to pay for one step up, that is the step.

Above the Junior Suites the ladder finally buys space: the Suite Sea View is 96 square metres with a separate lounge and a king bed, and the Suite Sea View With Whirlpool 114, with the whirlpool bath set outside on the terrace. Both are sea-facing by definition.

Ask for
Ask, in writing, for an unobstructed sea view on an upper floor and away from the driving range, and say the view is the reason for the stay. Ask whether a wedding or event is booked over your dates. If you want the whirlpool suite for the bath, confirm the bath is on the terrace, which is how the hotel's own page describes it.
Avoid
Do not book the Premier Room or the plain Singular Junior Suite for the sea, because both face the garden, and do not pay for a Golf View if you do not play, because it is the same room turned the other way. When you book, check that the rate says Sea View if the sea is the point.

Suites against rooms

The Suite Sea View at 96 square metres is where the floor area finally moves, with a separate lounge, and the Suite Sea View With Whirlpool at 114 is the hotel's top category, with an outdoor whirlpool bath on the terrace facing the Atlantic. Neither is priced here, so compare both on your dates: if the gap from the Panoramic Terrace rung is small, the 96 square metre suite is the better buy.

Our verdict

The escape at the end of the island, best for a few quiet nights with a hire car. Check availability for a sea-facing room.
