Loro Parque opened in Puerto de la Cruz in 1972 as a parrot park. It is now a zoo that says it keeps more than 400 animal species, from the parrots it started with to gorillas, chimpanzees, big cats, hippos, red pandas and the penguins of Planet Penguin. The paths wind through dense planting and Thai-style pavilions, and Kinderlandia is a play area for younger children. The ticket here is the park's own day ticket, the same one sold on loroparque.com and at the gate.

The day runs to a timetable of four presentations of about 20 minutes each. On the park's own timetable, sea lions are at 09:45, 10:45, 13:45 and 14:45; parrots at 10:25, 12:30, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:45; dolphins at 11:00, 13:00 and 16:15; and orcas at 11:55 and 15:15. The park opens every day from 09:30 to 17:30, its restaurants serve from 11:00 to 16:30, and lunch at Brunelli's Steakhouse, by the entrance, can be added to the ticket.

From Puerto de la Cruz, the park's free train leaves Plaza de los Reyes Católicos every 20 minutes from 09:30 to 16:30, and runs back from the park from 10:15 to 17:30. From the south, the park sells its own bus, which arrives from 10:00 and leaves for the south at 16:30, and there is a bus from Los Gigantes. By car, the park has a paid car park for visitors.

Four orcas live at the park: Tekoa, Morgan, Adán and Teno, Morgan's calf, born on 31 March 2025. The park's first orcas came from SeaWorld in 2006. Morgan was found stranded and underweight in the Wadden Sea in 2010 and came to Loro Parque in 2011, after a court case in the Netherlands. Four orcas have died at the park since 2021, the most recent Keto, in November 2024. The catch below sets out the dispute.

Why this one

GetYourGuide and the park sell the same ticket at the same price: an adult ticket was 44 euros on both, and the park's own site charged 32 euros for children aged 3 to 11. The difference is in the small print. The park's own tickets are not refundable, though they can be used on any later date; this one can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before. It was rated 4.8 from about 14,700 reviews on GetYourGuide.

The Twin Ticket adds Siam Park, our water park page, for 10 euros less than two single tickets, with 15 days to use the second park after the first visit; on GetYourGuide it was 78 euros, rated 4.7 from 8,387 reviews. Staying in the south without a car, the park's own bus saves the drive.

Good for

  • Families staying in Puerto de la Cruz, a short ride on the free train
  • Anyone who wants gorillas, penguins and parrots in one day
  • Visitors comfortable with orca and dolphin presentations

Not for

  • Anyone who would rather not watch orcas and dolphins perform
  • A quick half day: the site is large and hilly
  • South coast stays without a car, unless you take the park's bus

When to go

What a day at the park is like, month by month, at 13:00, when most visitors are halfway round. Temperature and cloud are modelled for the park in Puerto de la Cruz from five years of historical weather.

MonthTemperatureClear sky

Feb20°C / 18°C39%
Mar20°C / 18°C34%
Apr21°C / 19°C31%
May22°C / 21°C33%
Jun24°C / 22°C37%
Jul26°C / 24°C57%
Aug28°C / 25°C61%
Sept26°C / 24°C37%
Oct25°C / 23°C39%
Nov24°C / 21°C41%
Dec21°C / 19°C39%

Temperature is the median at 13:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 13:00.

The north is the cloudier side

In the weather data we looked at, the park had fewer clear days at 13:00 than Siam Park on the south coast in every month: 37% against 75% in June, 41% against 59% in November. The trade winds pile cloud against the north of the island, so a grey morning in Puerto de la Cruz can be a sunny one in the south. The park is a better bet than the beach on a cloudy day, and a warm one: the median at 13:00 is 20°C even in January.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Planet Penguin, with its snow and colony, is one of the most mentioned highlights
  • The gorillas draw strong, repeated praise for how close you can see them
  • The parrot presentation, with birds flying low over the seats, is a favourite
  • Many reviewers call the orca, dolphin and sea lion presentations the high point of the day
  • The gardens are praised even by visitors who criticise other things

Complaints

  • Crowds at the popular presentations in school holidays

The catch

  1. The orcas and dolphins are part of the day

Every ticket includes the orca and dolphin presentations; no ticket leaves them out, though nobody has to watch. Four orcas have died at the park since 2021. Animal welfare groups, among them World Animal Protection and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, campaign against keeping orcas and against the shows; the park says its animals are well cared for, and funds conservation through the Loro Parque Fundación. Loro Parque has also agreed to take two orcas, Wikie and Keijo, from Marineland in France, which has closed; Spain's scientific authority for endangered species reported against the move, and in September 2026 it was still pending. No Spanish national law bans orca and dolphin shows; dolphinariums operate under the rules for zoos.

What to do. Decide before you go how you feel about orca and dolphin shows. If you would rather not support them, this is not the ticket for you: the rest of the park is not sold without them.

  2. The listing's age rule is wrong

The GetYourGuide listing says the ticket is not suitable for children under 6. The park's own rules are that children under 3 go free and children from 3 to 11 pay the child price, 32 euros on its site.

What to do. With a child under 3, no ticket is needed; for children of 3 to 11, check the ages on the ticket options before you pay.

  3. The site is big and hilly

The park is spread over a steep site, and reviewers regularly mention the walking and the heat. The presentations are at fixed times across the day, so you cross the park more than once.

What to do. Wear comfortable shoes. The park lends wheelchairs free against a deposit, and rents pushchairs for 5 euros and motorised buggies for 15 euros a day, booked three days ahead.

  4. The orcas appear twice a day

The orca presentation runs only at 11:55 and 15:15, and the popular presentations fill up in the busy months, reviewers say. The park advises arriving a few minutes before each one.

What to do. Photograph the timetable at the entrance and plan the route around the presentations you most want to see.

  5. From the south it is a long day

From the six hotels in our edit on the south and west coasts, the park is 60 to 66 minutes' drive each way. The park's own bus from the south arrives from 10:00 and leaves at 16:30, about six and a half hours of the eight the park is open.

What to do. Staying in the south, leave early by car, or take the bus and plan the day around one of the two orca times.
