What we looked for

In Tenerife a spa does a different job on each coast. In the north, Puerto de la Cruz gets four or five wet days in January to the south's roughly two, so the spa is the plan for the cooler afternoons: heated pools, a thermal circuit and a treatment while the weather makes up its mind. In the south and on the west coast, it is the calm counterweight to a week of sun at a big resort.

All five hotels here have treatment rooms and a proper water circuit, not a sauna beside the gym. Choose by what the spa is for. If it is the holiday, go north, to gardens and Teide views or the silence of the Teno coast. If it is one part of a sunny week, stay on the south-west coast, and book your treatments before you fly.

This is a spa hotel first. Its Oriental Spa Garden takes up 3,500 square metres of its own grounds, Thai in inspiration and staffed by nearly thirty therapists, with a thermal circuit and climatised indoor and outdoor pools that run up to 26 degrees. The circuit is included for hotel guests, and treatments run from a 50-minute Thai or volcanic-stone massage to 80-minute rituals and the Golden Dragon ritual for couples.

Everything around it keeps the same unhurried pace. The hotel stands in 25,000 square metres of subtropical garden with black swans and koi, Teide rises beyond the pool, and the renovated rooms are in an adults-only wing. The spa is for guests of 16 and over, which makes this a stay for couples, friends and older teenagers.

The spa covers 2,500 square metres and has an indoor pool, and its water facilities run from a Turkish bath and a hydrotherapy pool to a sauna and a cold plunge. Treatments are for over-18s and the gym for over-16s.

Yoga and Pilates come with a room in the Retreat, the calm half of the estate: four lanes of two-storey casitas with pools of their own, adults-only options among them. Around that sit golf, tennis and M.B, one of the island's two two-star kitchens, so a spa week here rarely needs to leave the gates. It suits a couple who want a treatment in the morning, the sunset over La Gomera in the evening and a serious dinner after it.

The spa covers 2,000 square metres and its treatments are by Clarins: the brand's products with manual massage, aromatherapy and herbal teas. Its water circuit has a sauna, chromotherapy, hydromassage, essence showers, bi-thermal foot baths and a meditation area, and it is easy to build into a week: any treatment brings one free visit, and all-inclusive bookings include it.

In a resort of around 600 rooms, RedLevel is where that calm carries on through the day: private check-in, a lounge with breakfast and an afternoon open bar, and a pool for adults only. The adults-only RedLevel villa goes further, with a heated private pool, a butler and the spa's water ritual included. This coast faces west, so the day ends with the sunset over La Gomera.

The thermal circuit moves from a heated pool and a whirlpool to a footbath, sauna, Turkish bath and ice fountain, ends in contrast showers, and leaves you in a relaxation area with tea. Treatments are built on essential oils and aromatherapy rituals, and a multi-purpose room holds yoga, Pilates and meditation.

The setting is the rest of the programme. There are 117 rooms at the north-west tip of the island, with the Teno massif behind, heated outdoor pools, the Ballesteros golf course at the door and Masca 20 minutes away by road. It works best as a few nights of spa and walking beside a week in the south.

Its outdoor circuit pool is filled with Atlantic seawater and fitted with air beds and jets, and the circuit carries on through a hammam, a sauna and experience showers. There are 20 treatment rooms, the circuit runs from 10am to 6pm for guests of 16 and over, and a free 24-hour gym sits outside the spa.

Its other advantage is the beach. Playa del Duque, a calm Blue Flag beach, is just across the promenade, so a morning on the circuit and an afternoon swim in the sea fit into one day without a car. The Mini Club, for ages 3 to 12 and part of the rate, runs from 10am to 5.45pm, which makes the spa easy to fit into a family week.
