What we looked for

Tenerife sells two kinds of view. Puerto de la Cruz, on the north coast, is the coastal end of the Orotava valley, so rooms on the hillside above the town can face down to the Atlantic or up the valley to Teide, 3,715 metres high, and a few categories get both. That coast sits under Teide's cloud line, so the volcano shows best on a clear morning. On the south-west coast the view is the open sea, with La Gomera on the horizon and the sun going down beyond it; at the north-west tip it is the wild Atlantic, looking towards La Palma.

At every hotel here the view is a room category, not luck. Several sell rung after rung at the same size, so what the extra money buys is the outlook. Choose the coast first, then check that the room name carries the view you want: Panoramic, Teide View, Sea Front or Sea View, or at Bahía del Duque the sea-view supplement.

1 / 5

Gran Hotel Taoro

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife

Gran Hotel Taoro opened in 1890 on a terrace in Parque Taoro, about 99 metres above the sea, and the view is why it stands there: the roofs of Puerto de la Cruz below, the Atlantic beyond, and the Orotava valley climbing behind to Teide. Which part of it you see depends on the room name. The Ocean View rooms face the Atlantic over the town, and the Double Deluxe Room Panoramic View is the one Deluxe category whose page puts the Atlantic, Teide and the valley in the same window.

All four Deluxe categories are 30 square metres, so stepping up from the Garden View pays for outlook alone. At the top of the house, the 2 Bedroom Presidential Suite sits in one of the four towers, looking over the Atlantic and the mountain. Breakfast at Atlántico is on a terrace with the same sweep of town, sea and volcano.

Double Deluxe Room Panoramic View

30 m²€259 a night

The one Deluxe category sold on the Atlantic, Teide and the Orotava valley together, in the same 30 square metres as the garden-facing Deluxe rooms.

Every room, and why

Book the balcony with the room and have it confirmed by email, since Deluxe balconies depend on availability, then ask for a high floor on the Teide side.

Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden: The pool and palm gardensThe spa one

2 / 5

Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife

Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden sits on the hillside above Puerto de la Cruz, next to the Jardín Botánico, and names its rooms by the way they face: Teide View towards the volcano, Ocean View towards the Atlantic. Teide is in view from the pool too, behind 25,000 square metres of subtropical garden with black swans and koi.

The Teide-facing room to book is in the adults-only wing, one of the categories the hotel calls newly renovated: 38 square metres, a private terrace, a dressing room and an Italian marble bathroom. The higher the floor, the clearer the view over the gardens. For the Orotava valley as well as the volcano, the Double Penthouse on the fifth floor faces both, with a private terrace and a whirlpool bath, and the Penthouse Suite looks at Teide across a 68 square metre terrace.

The room to book

Superior Deluxe Teide View

38 m²€297 a night

The most affordable renovated room facing Teide: 38 square metres in the adults-only wing, with a private terrace to sit out on with the volcano in front of you.

Every room, and why

Ask for a high floor on the Teide side of the adults-only wing, and check that the rate says Teide View rather than Ocean View.

Royal Hideaway Corales Beach: Rooftop infinity pool at sunsetThe all-rounder

3 / 5

Royal Hideaway Corales Beach

La Caleta, Costa Adeje, Tenerife

Royal Hideaway Corales Beach stands where Costa Adeje's building stops and the coast turns to rock, square-on to the Atlantic. Every room is a junior suite of 55 to 65 square metres, and every category except the Junior Suite with Outdoor Hot Tub faces the sea, so the ladder decides how much horizon you get rather than how much room.

The Junior Suite Sea Front Panoramic View is placed on the third and fourth floors, high enough for an unbroken horizon, with a 20 square metre south-facing terrace and loungers. Higher still, the rooftop infinity pool and the Royal Heaven Maresía bar look out towards La Gomera, and guests single out the pool at sunset. El Rincón de Juan Carlos, on the fifth floor, sits forty metres above the ocean. The hotel is adults-only, and at night what you hear from the terrace is the sea.

Junior Suite Sea Front Panoramic View

55 to 65 m²

The only category the hotel places by floor, on the third and fourth: the same 20 square metre terrace as the entry suite, set higher, with the horizon uninterrupted.

Every room, and why

Ask for the fourth floor, the higher of the two, and a corner suite if one is free, for the extra light.

Bahía del Duque: The resort at duskThe classic

4 / 5

Bahía del Duque

Costa Adeje, Tenerife

Bahía del Duque steps down a slope as a village of Canarian houses to Playa del Duque, a Blue Flag beach across the promenade. Every category below the Presidential Suites is sold on a garden or inland view with the sea as a supplement, so the view is something you add when you book, and it is the step that puts the beach in the window.

The place to spend it is the Casas Ducales, the wing with its own reception, lounge and breakfast terrace, and canapés with drinks from seven. Its Junior Suite, with the supplement paid, looks over Playa del Duque. Further up the ladder the Presidential Suites include the sea in the rate, and the Casas Ducales Presidential Suite is the one category sold on the sunset as well, from a terrace with a dining area, sun loungers and an outdoor jacuzzi.

With the sea-view supplement added, this open-plan suite with a terrace or balcony looks over Playa del Duque, and the wing's lounge and breakfast terrace are downstairs.

Every room, and why

Ask in writing for an upper floor of its house and a terrace rather than a balcony, and say the beach is the reason for the stay.

Hacienda del Conde: Infinity pool at duskThe escape

5 / 5

Hacienda del Conde

Buenavista del Norte, Tenerife

Hacienda del Conde is the last hotel before Tenerife runs out of road, at Buenavista del Norte, with the Teno massif behind it and a golf course laid out above the sea. Every room has a furnished terrace, and every room below the suites is 55 square metres, so an upgrade buys only what the terrace faces: garden, fairways or the open Atlantic.

The two Sea View categories look out over the wild Isla Baja coast, and the Singular Junior Suite Sea View with Panoramic Terrace is the one the hotel describes as having its most privileged views. Above it, both suites face the ocean, and the larger puts a whirlpool bath out on the terrace. The hotel is adults-only and quiet to the point of silence, which suits a view like this, and the sunsets on this coast are dramatic.

The room to book

Singular Junior Suite Sea View with Panoramic Terrace

55 m²

The same 55 square metres as the entry room, turned to the ocean, with the private terrace the hotel says has its most privileged views.

Every room, and why

Questions people ask

Good questions about Tenerife

Which hotels in Tenerife have a view of Mount Teide?

Two of ours, both above Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast, where the Orotava valley climbs towards the volcano. At Gran Hotel Taoro, the Double Deluxe Room Panoramic View takes in the Atlantic, Teide and the valley together. Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden sells Teide View rooms, the renovated Superior Deluxe among them, and the volcano is in view from the pool too. Teide rises to 3,715 metres, and from the north coast it shows best on a clear morning.

Which Tenerife hotels have the best sunset views?

Look west. On the Guía de Isora coast, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama and Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora look across the water to the sunset over La Gomera, so book an ocean-view category. In Costa Adeje, the rooftop infinity pool and Royal Heaven Maresía bar at Royal Hideaway Corales Beach look out towards La Gomera, and Bahía del Duque sells one category on the sunset, the Casas Ducales Presidential Suite. At the north-west tip, Hacienda del Conde's Sea View categories face the open Atlantic, and the sunsets there are dramatic.

Is a sea-view room worth paying extra for in Tenerife?

At these hotels it usually is, because the extra buys the view and little else changes. Every Deluxe room at Gran Hotel Taoro is 30 square metres and every room below suite level at Hacienda del Conde is 55, so the step up is pure outlook. At Bahía del Duque the sea is a supplement on every category below the Presidential Suites. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach makes it simple: all but one category face the sea, and the Panoramic adds height.

Do the view rooms come with a balcony or terrace?

At most of these hotels, yes. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach gives its Sea Front and Panoramic suites a 20 square metre terrace with loungers, every room at Hacienda del Conde has a furnished terrace, and the Superior Deluxe Teide View at Hotel Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden has a private terrace. At Bahía del Duque, the Casas Ducales Junior Suite comes with a terrace or a balcony, while the entry rooms may have a balcony, a terrace or a French balcony, so ask which you are getting.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
