Delayed or cancelled flight from Gatwick: what you are owed
For anyone whose flight from Gatwick is late, cancelled or overbooked, including if you are waiting in the terminal now. Here is what the airline owes you today, how much compensation your route pays, and how to claim it, free or with help.
The short answer
Every flight leaving Gatwick is covered by UK261, whatever the airline, from easyJet and British Airways to Emirates. Reach your final destination three hours or more late, or have your flight cancelled at short notice, and you are owed £220 (up to 1,500 km), £350 (1,500–3,500 km) or £520 (over 3,500 km; £260 if you arrive three to four hours late), unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances. Whatever the cause, the airline must also look after you while you wait.

What is your flight worth?
–
A guide, not legal advice. The amount is per passenger, on top of the meals, drinks and hotel the airline owes you while you wait.
Stuck at London Gatwick right now?
While you wait at Gatwick, the airline must give you meals and drinks once the delay reaches 2 hours on flights up to 1,500 km, 3 hours on flights of 1,500–3,500 km and 4 hours on longer flights, plus a hotel and transport to it if you cannot leave until the next day. Once the delay reaches 5 hours you can choose a refund instead of flying. This applies even when the delay is not the airline's fault, so if no one helps, buy what is reasonable and keep every receipt.

What delays flights at Gatwick, and which causes pay
Gatwick has the longest average departure delay of the five London airports: 16.4 minutes in 2025, with 69.4% of departures leaving within 15 minutes of schedule, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority. That year 584 departures (0.45%) left more than three hours late and 919 were cancelled (0.7% of those planned).
Causes that usually pay compensation: a technical fault with the aircraft, crew shortages, a strike by the airline's own staff, and knock-on delays from the airline's own earlier problems. Causes that usually do not: weather that makes flying unsafe, air traffic control restrictions and strikes, security alerts, bird strikes and failures at the airport. When the national air traffic control flight-planning system failed on 28 August 2023, the CAA estimates more than 700,000 passengers across the UK were affected; an air traffic control failure is the kind of event an airline can argue was beyond its control, but meals, hotels and rebooking were still owed.
The burden is on the airline: it must prove the extraordinary circumstance and that it could not have avoided the delay with all reasonable measures. Ask for the reason in writing before you leave the airport.
Your rights while you wait at Gatwick
Care comes from the airline that operates your flight, so start at its desk or app. easyJet flies from the North Terminal; British Airways, Ryanair, Jet2, Vueling and Wizz Air from the South. If a cancellation leaves you stranded, Gatwick's Your Service Centre, in South Terminal check-in zone J or on level 2 of the North Terminal, can help with other ways to travel.
If the flight is cancelled, you choose between a refund within seven days and a new flight at the earliest opportunity, and the airline should look at other airlines too if they would get you there sooner. You keep the right to compensation as well, unless you were told at least 14 days ahead or offered a close alternative.
Stuck overnight, the nearest beds are Hampton by Hilton, a two-minute covered walk from North check-in, and BLOC and YOTEL inside the South Terminal; Sofitel (North) and Hilton (South) are a short covered walk away. Ask the airline to book you in; if it will not, a reasonably priced room and the transport to it can be claimed back with receipts.

How to claim
Claim yourself, free. Use the airline's own claim form with your booking reference and flight number, and ask to be paid in money: you do not have to accept vouchers. If the airline says no, or has not replied after 8 weeks, take it to the airline's CAA-approved dispute scheme, which is also free: AviationADR for easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air and TUI Airways; CEDR for British Airways. Apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer. If your airline belongs to no scheme, the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team can take up the complaint. A court claim in England and Wales can be brought up to six years after the flight (five years if you live in Scotland).
If you would rather not chase it, AirHelp runs the claim on a no win, no fee basis: it keeps 35% of the compensation, including VAT, if it wins, plus 15% if court action is needed, and charges nothing if it does not win.
Whichever you choose, keep your boarding pass or booking confirmation, your booking reference, receipts for anything you bought while waiting, and the reason for the delay the airline gave you, ideally in writing or as a screenshot of the app.

Good questions about London Gatwick
How much compensation for a delayed flight from Gatwick?
£220 for flights up to 1,500 km (Edinburgh, Barcelona, Rome), £350 for 1,500–3,500 km (Málaga, Faro, Tenerife) and £520 for longer flights (Dubai, Orlando), if you arrive three hours or more late. On flights over 3,500 km that arrive three to four hours late, the airline can pay £260 instead.
What am I entitled to if my easyJet flight from Gatwick is cancelled?
The same as on any airline: a refund within seven days or a new flight, meals and drinks while you wait, a hotel if you are stuck overnight, and £220–£520 compensation unless you were told at least 14 days before (or offered a close alternative flight) or easyJet proves extraordinary circumstances.
Is a technical fault an extraordinary circumstance?
Generally not. A fault found in maintenance or one that happens unexpectedly is part of running an airline, so compensation is still due unless the airline proves something exceptional, such as a hidden manufacturing defect.
I missed a connection at Gatwick on separate tickets. Can I claim?
Not for the missed onward flight. Separate tickets are separate trips, so you can claim only if the first flight itself reached Gatwick three hours or more late, and only for that flight.
What happens if my flight from Gatwick is overbooked?
If you are refused boarding against your will, the airline must pay £220, £350 or £520 straight away, plus a refund or a new flight and meals while you wait. If you volunteer to give up your seat, you get what you agree with the airline, plus a refund or a new flight.
How long do I have to claim for a delayed flight from Gatwick?
Up to six years in England and Wales, or five years if you live in Scotland. Claim soon anyway: the CAA-approved dispute schemes need you to apply within 12 months of the airline's final answer.
