The take on Inara Camp

Inara Camp is a desert camp of 19 tents and suites on the stony plateau of the Agafay, south-west of Marrakech, with the High Atlas about 45 km away along the horizon, sharpest in winter when the peaks carry snow. It was called Agafay Camp before it took its present name, and it belongs to Inara Collection. The owner designed the interiors himself from local crafts, wood and iron gathered in the countryside, stone and every shade of brown. The camp is in two parts: the restaurant on the higher ground, and the tents below it, spaced apart and facing out over the desert.

Every tent has a king-size or twin beds, a lounge corner, a bathroom with a hot shower and toilet, a glass door that locks, insulation against heat and sound, and reversible air conditioning that warms the tent on winter nights. The Discovery Tents, renovated in 2026, are the entry rung at 25 m². The Emotion Tents, at 30 m², add a private terrace and a tadelakt shower; the Emotion Suites, at 42 m², add an 18 m² wooden terrace and an outdoor shower. The Inara Suites and the 78 m² Agafay Suite sleep a family of four, and the Agafay Suite and Suite n°19 have 40 m² terraces with a private outdoor jacuzzi.

The point is the emptiness, close to the city. Marrakech Menara airport is a 50-minute drive, so a guest can land at lunchtime and be by the pool for sunset. There are two pools, both heated, which the camp keeps at 26°C all year: the Desert Lagoon, cast from sand and quartz in a porous resin so that it feels like a beach, looking over the canyon, and the Infinity Pool, which has a bar and the desert beyond it. Dinner is served in the Circle, the camp's shared living space, by a campfire and candlelight, with vegetables from a permaculture farm nearby. Days go on camel rides that leave from the camp, quad and e-bike rides, a pottery workshop or nothing at all, and at night the stars fill the sky.

The trade is the landscape and the distance. The Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills, not golden dunes, and Jemaa el-Fna is about an hour's drive, so the Medina is a day trip rather than an evening stroll. The wifi is weak, which suits the purpose but not a working week. Book it for one or two quiet nights between the souks and the flight home; take an Emotion Suite for the terrace and the outdoor shower.

Where Inara Camp is, and getting there

The camp stands alone in open desert on the Agafay plateau, 33 km south-west of Jemaa el-Fna in a straight line, with the High Atlas to the south and nothing within walking distance. Off-peak drives: Marrakech Menara airport 50 minutes, Marrakech station in Guéliz 55, Jemaa el-Fna about an hour (cars stop at the edge of the square), Jardin Majorelle about an hour, the Lalla Takerkoust lake 26 minutes, Imlil, the trailhead village for Toubkal, 1 h 45, and Essaouira 3 hours. The camp can arrange a transfer; a taxi from the city is the other way in. Parking on site is free. Camel and quad rides start at the camp, and buggy and e-bike rides go out with a private guide.
