What we looked for

In Marrakech the pool question is really a temperature question. Afternoons are warm most of the year, January averaging 18.2°C, but January nights average 3.8°C, and the cooler season runs from October to May, when many people come. A pool heated all year is what makes a winter-sun week work.

The second question is where you want it. La Mamounia puts its pool in walled gardens inside the Medina, 9 minutes on foot from the Koutoubia, so a swim and the souks fit in one day. Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, Palais Namaskar and Inara Camp are out of town, with the High Atlas on the horizon and the city a drive away: there the pool is the day itself. Choose the Medina for water and sightseeing together; choose a resort for long, slow days by the pool.

Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech

Route d'Amizmiz, Marrakech

This is the pool people mean when they ask for a big one. The main pool is 100 metres long and 2,000 m², heated to 28°C, set in front of the main building and facing the Atlas, and the hotel calls it the largest pool in Marrakech. A shallow children's zone runs along it, so small children and strong swimmers share the same water.

There is more. The Country Club has a semi-Olympic pool, the Fitness Centre a semi-Olympic lap pool and the 3,500 m² spa an indoor pool, the last two kept for guests aged 18 and over, which keeps them calm for parents. L'Olivier serves lunch by the pool from 12.30pm to 4pm, so a whole day can pass without leaving the water's edge, on an estate of 231 hectares.

For winter and spring swims with small children, use the main pool's shallow zone, heated to 28°C all year.

Palais Namaskar

Palmeraie, Marrakech

Water is the whole design here. The gardens run with lakes, cascades and reflecting pools, there is a main outdoor mosaic pool, and every one of the 41 rooms, suites, villas and palaces has a terrace and access to an outdoor or private pool. The private pools start with the 90 m² Junior Suites, which have one on the terrace with a fireplace and an outdoor shower; the Pool Suites open onto 180 m² of garden with a pool off the living room, and the walled Pool Villas add an outdoor bath.

Lunch is at La Table, in the garden by the pool. The hotel does not say which pools are heated, and the one heated pool it names is in the spa's larger duo suite, so for a winter swim ask before you book whether your suite's pool can be heated on your dates.

La Mamounia

Medina, Marrakech

The outdoor pool sits in the gardens inside the Medina walls, among olive trees two centuries old, orange trees and palms, and it is heated to 28°C all year and kept for hotel guests, so it never fills with day visitors. Breakfast is served beside it at Le Pavillon de la Piscine, from 7:00 to 11:00, which makes the first swim of the day an easy one.

The 2,500 m² spa adds an indoor pool, also at 28°C, with two hammams, a sauna and a jacuzzi; it is for guests of 18 and over, or 16 with an adult. Both pools are ozone-treated. For a pool of your own, each of the three 700 m² riads in the gardens has a private heated pool and a butler. The Koutoubia is 9 minutes away on foot, so a morning in the water and an afternoon in the city fit together.

Inara Camp: The Infinity Pool looking out over the desertThe escape

Inara Camp

Agafay, Marrakech

Two pools for 19 tents is a generous share, and the camp keeps both at 26°C all year. The Desert Lagoon is cast from sand and quartz in a porous resin, so it feels like a beach underfoot, and it looks out over the canyon below the camp. The Infinity Pool has a bar and nothing but the stony Agafay beyond it, with the High Atlas along the horizon on clear days, sharpest in winter when the peaks carry snow.

This is where the days go: a swim after breakfast, a drink at the bar and the sun going down to the west from the water. With Marrakech Menara airport a 50-minute drive away, an early flight can end in warm water the same afternoon. In winter the pools stay at 26°C while the evenings cool.
