Agafay is a reg, a stony desert of white and ochre hills about 30 kilometres south-west of Marrakech, on the first rise towards the High Atlas. There are no Saharan sand dunes here: the draw is the open, lunar landscape, the light at the end of the day and, on clear days, the Atlas behind it, snow-capped in winter. It is close enough to the city to fill an afternoon and an evening, which is why it is such a popular evening out.

This tour collects you in the afternoon, with departures listed at 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00, either at one of the operator's free central meeting points or, for an extra charge, at your hotel. An air-conditioned minibus stops at an argan oil cooperative on the way, then carries on to the operator's camp in the desert. There you put on a helmet and goggles for a 40-minute quad ride behind a guide, two people to a quad, followed by a 15-minute camel ride as the sun goes down.

Dinner is Moroccan, with water, in Berber tents at the camp: the operator mentions tagine, couscous and fresh fruit, and vegetarian or gluten-free meals are available. Live Moroccan music plays through the evening, and the night ends with a fire show. The whole outing takes about seven hours, so you are back in Marrakech in the late evening.

The price is the reason it sells so well. From 20.58 euros on GetYourGuide on 31 October 2026, it covers the return transport, the quad, the camel, dinner and the show, and it was rated 4.8 from about 46,700 reviews that day, with the guides scored 4.9 out of 5 and value for money 4.9.

Why this one

Dozens of near-identical Agafay evenings are sold from Marrakech. This is the most reviewed of them on GetYourGuide, at 4.8 from about 46,700 reviews on 31 October 2026, with transport, both rides, dinner and the show in one price. Its closest twin, Agafay Sunset Quad, Camel Ride and Dinner (4.8 from about 15,500 reviews, from 18.31 euros), runs to the same plan in about six hours. If nobody wants to drive a quad, the Agafay Desert Sunset, Camel Ride and Dinner Show (4.6 from about 40,100 reviews, from 14.91 euros) skips it and is over in about four hours. The Agafay Desert Retreat (4.8 from about 7,000 reviews, from 50.41 euros) is the slower choice: a night in a tent, two pools and dinner and a show.

If you would rather sleep in Agafay in comfort, Inara Camp in our Marrakech edit is out in the same hills. For the countryside from above, our Sunrise hot-air balloon flight from Marrakech, with breakfast covers a flight over the plain outside the city with the Atlas on the skyline, and for the mountains up close, the Atlas Mountains and Imlil valley day trip is a full day in the High Atlas valleys. Our guide to where to stay is on the Marrakech page.

Good for

  • Couples and friends who want one big evening outside the city
  • Families who want camels, dinner and a show in one outing
  • Short stays: the desert and the Atlas view in half a day

Not for

  • Anyone set on Saharan sand dunes
  • Travellers who want a quiet, private evening
  • Anyone who wants a quad of their own: it is shared, two to a quad

Hot afternoons in summer, cool nights in winter

In July the median at 16:00 was 37.6°C, and even the coolest day in ten reached 33.0°C. In winter it turns the other way: two hours after sunset in January the median was 14.6°C, and one night in ten was below 9.7°C. Spring and autumn give the mildest evenings.

From our Marrakech hotels

Times are routed to Bab Agnaou, one of the meeting points on the tour's itinerary, on foot from our five Medina hotels and by car from the others. The itinerary also lists points by the Koutoubia, at the Cyber Park and in Guéliz; the operator says six central points are free and offers hotel pickup in Marrakech for an extra charge, so check which point is yours when you book. Cars cannot reach most riad doors, so for a Medina hotel expect to be met at the nearest gate or square. Fairmont Royal Palm, Palais Namaskar and Inara Camp lie outside the city: ask the operator before you book.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Friendly guides who look after the group from pickup to drop-off
  • The quad ride through the hills and the sunset over the desert
  • A full evening, with transport, dinner and a show, for a low price

Complaints

  • At busy times the camp is crowded and there can be a wait for the quads and camels

The catch

  1. It is a stony desert, not sand dunes

Agafay is a reg of stones and bare white and ochre hills, about 30 kilometres from Marrakech. Its appeal is the open landscape, the sunset and the High Atlas on the skyline, snow-capped in winter.

What to do. Come for the hills and the view; for Saharan dunes, plan a separate trip to Merzouga.

  2. In winter, the light goes early

Sunset falls between 17:33 and 17:52 from November to January in our data, and with a 16:00 pickup and the cooperative stop on the way, the quad ride can run into the dusk.

What to do. From November to February, book the 14:00 pickup so the quad and camel rides happen in daylight.

  3. Summer afternoons are very hot

At 16:00 in July the median temperature in our data was 37.6°C, and 36.1°C in August.

What to do. In summer take the 16:00 pickup, drink plenty of water and bring sun protection, as the operator advises.

  4. Desert evenings are cool

Two hours after sunset, the median was 14.6°C in January and 14.3°C in December, and in January one night in ten fell below 10°C.

What to do. Bring a warm layer for dinner from November to March; the operator suggests a light jacket all year.

  5. Choose your pickup point with care

The price covers pickup at the operator's free central meeting points; hotel pickup costs extra. The operator asks for a WhatsApp number to send the meeting details.

What to do. Leave your WhatsApp number when you book, and pick the meeting point nearest your hotel, or pay for hotel pickup.

  6. The rides are shared and short

The quad is a double quad for two people, for 40 minutes, and the camel ride lasts 15 minutes. The evening is built around dinner and the show.

What to do. If driving matters most, book with someone happy to share; ask the operator about a single quad before you book.
