What we looked for

Quiet in Marrakech is about walls more than distance. The Medina's lanes are busy with mopeds and handcarts by day, but a riad turns its back on them: the rooms face a courtyard, and the noise stays outside the door. The call to prayer carries across the rooftops at dusk, so a roof terrace at sunset is a place to hear the city rather than escape it. Hivernage, just west of the walls, is the district of late restaurants and rooftop bars, so there the gate and the garden do the work. The Agafay desert, about an hour from Jemaa el-Fna, is quiet without trying.

Choose by what you want the evening to be. A riad, Dar Kandi or La Villa des Orangers, keeps the Medina on foot. Royal Mansour Marrakech gives you a house of your own. Dar Rhizlane trades the lanes for a garden and a short taxi ride, and Inara Camp trades the city for dark nights.

Dar Kandi: The tree-filled patio around its fountainThe smart money

1 / 5

Dar Kandi

Medina, Marrakech

Dar Kandi has six suites, which is about as small as a hotel gets. It stands on Derb Arset Aouzal, a lane in Bab Doukkala, a residential quarter, five minutes' walk inside the gate, and cars stop at a guarded car park nearby rather than at the door. The suites open onto a patio planted with trees around a fountain, and the house stays quiet behind its door.

The evening here is the house's own. Lunch and dinner are cooked for residents alone and served wherever you like, the dining room, the patio or the roof, so there are no outside diners. Above the suites are three roof terraces, one with the pool. Le Jardin Secret is 9 minutes on foot and Jemaa el-Fna 17, close enough to walk back to the calm.

Dar Rhizlane: The pool below the house at duskThe insider one

2 / 5

Dar Rhizlane

Hivernage, Marrakech

Dar Rhizlane is built for quiet. It is set back from Avenue du Président Kennedy, a tree-lined street in Hivernage, behind tall old eucalyptus and a wrought-iron gate, and it was conceived as a palace-style house rather than a conventional hotel. Inside are water gardens of lilies and papyrus, grapefruit trees and palms, and every room opens onto an Andalusian garden or a flower-filled terrace.

It gives you a reason to stay in. Le Mimouna cooks inventive Moroccan dishes with seasonal produce, with meals moving to the terrace beside the pool in good weather, and there is a hammam in the spa. There is no kids' club and no children's pool. The Medina is about 5 minutes by taxi to Place de Foucauld beside Jemaa el-Fna on clear roads, nearer 15 in heavy traffic.

Royal Mansour Marrakech: A riad roof terrace with its plunge poolThe grand one

3 / 5

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Medina, Marrakech

Royal Mansour Marrakech is a formal, quiet palace. Its 53 riads stand on a walled estate inside the Medina's western ramparts, each a private house behind its own carved door, and they face inwards, onto their own patios and roof terraces. Staff move through underground galleries, not the guests' lanes, so the paths between the houses stay calm.

The evening can stay inside the riad. Every riad has its own patio and a roof terrace with a plunge pool over the Medina rooftops, and the Premier riads add a dining room and a bar around the patio, so dinner can be served at home. A taxi stops at the hotel's own gate on Rue Abou El Abbas Sebti, and the gardens cover a little more than 2.5 hectares.

Premier Riad

Its dining room and bar around the patio mean dinner can be served in the riad, and a shaded tent by the roof pool gives shade in the hot hours.

Every room, and why

Inara Camp: The Infinity Pool looking out over the desertThe escape

4 / 5

Inara Camp

Agafay, Marrakech

Inara Camp is quiet by geography. Its 19 tents and suites stand alone on the stony Agafay plateau, with nothing within walking distance and the High Atlas on the horizon. The tents are spaced apart and face out over the desert, below the restaurant on the higher ground, and each is insulated against heat and sound.

The evening is dinner by a campfire and candlelight in the Circle, the camp's shared living space, and then the stars, which fill the sky on dark nights. The wifi is weak, enough for messages but not for a working day, which suits the purpose. Marrakech Menara airport is a 50-minute drive, so a night or two here fits neatly at the end of a Medina stay.

La Villa des Orangers: The 16-metre pool in its own patioThe all-rounder

5 / 5

La Villa des Orangers

Medina, Marrakech

La Villa des Orangers is a calm house made for adults. Its 33 rooms and suites are set around courtyards and patios in a 1930s riad between the Koutoubia and the Royal Palace, with a fountain and orange trees in the main courtyard and a 16-metre pool among citrus trees in a second. There is no kids' club, and most rooms are sized for two.

The rooftop bar faces the Koutoubia from 18:00 to 21:00, so the roof is quiet by late evening; the cocktail bar, in an almost hidden patio of its own, pours until midnight, and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Breakfast is served from 06:30 by the pool or in the courtyards. Outside, a taxi stops at the door on Rue Sidi Mimoun, and the Koutoubia is 8 minutes on foot and Jemaa el-Fna 11.

Room with Terrace at La Villa des Orangers: a double bed under a woven canopy headboard, with two green armchairs and a low table at its foot.

The room to book

Room with Terrace

about 20 m²

A staircase from the bedroom leads to a private terrace over the Medina rooftops: a quiet outdoor room of your own for breakfast or dusk.

Every room, and why

Ask for a terrace that faces the Koutoubia or the Atlas, since only some of them have that view.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Marrakech

Is the Medina in Marrakech noisy at night?

The lanes are busy with mopeds and handcarts by day, and the call to prayer carries across the rooftops at dusk. But riads face inwards, onto courtyards, so the street stays outside. Dar Kandi has six suites round a tree-filled patio on a lane in Bab Doukkala, with dinner for residents only. Royal Mansour Marrakech puts 53 private riads behind walls, each facing its own patio. La Villa des Orangers, on the Medina's south-western edge, closes its rooftop bar at 21:00.

Is Hivernage quiet?

It depends on the address. Hivernage is the district of late restaurants and rooftop bars: Nobu's rooftop bar stays open until 1am, and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. Dar Rhizlane, on Avenue du Président Kennedy, is set back from the street behind tall eucalyptus and a wrought-iron gate, with water gardens inside and every room opening onto a garden or a terrace. Ask for a quiet room when you book if you sleep lightly.

Which is the quietest area to stay in Marrakech?

The Agafay desert, south-west of the city. Inara Camp's 19 insulated tents stand alone on a stony plateau, spaced apart and facing the desert, with nothing within walking distance and dark night skies. The trade is distance: with Jemaa el-Fna about an hour away by car, the Medina becomes a day out. For quiet with the city on foot, choose a small Medina riad such as Dar Kandi.

Which quiet Marrakech hotels have a pool?

All five. Dar Kandi has a pool on the roof with loungers, open from 10:00 to 21:00, though it is not heated. Dar Rhizlane has an outdoor pool in its Andalusian garden. Every riad at Royal Mansour Marrakech has its own plunge pool on the roof, and the spa has a heated indoor pool. Inara Camp heats its two pools to 26°C all year, and La Villa des Orangers has a 16-metre courtyard pool, heated in season.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
