What we looked for

These three are hotels you would book a table at even if you slept elsewhere, and all three take outside diners who reserve. They are also close: from Nobu Hotel Marrakech, La Mamounia's restaurants are 5 minutes on foot, and from La Mamounia, La Grande Table Marocaine at Royal Mansour Marrakech is 8. Stay at one and you can eat at all three in a long weekend.

A few local facts shape the evenings. MICHELIN rates Marrakech's hotels with its Keys but has no restaurant selection for Morocco, so no table here carries a star. All three serve alcohol, which many riads do not. Dress codes are real: elegant at La Mamounia, with no shorts after 6pm, and smart casual with closed shoes at Nobu. In Ramadan, restaurant hours change, so check ahead. Choose by cooking: Japanese and Peruvian at Nobu, Moroccan haute cuisine at Royal Mansour, and the widest choice under one roof at La Mamounia.

Nobu Hotel Marrakech

Hivernage, Marrakech

Nobu Hotel Marrakech is built around dinner. Nobu Marrakech, on the ground floor, serves the dishes Nobu Matsuhisa made famous, black cod miso, rock shrimp tempura and yellowtail sashimi, alongside plates that borrow Moroccan flavours, every evening from 7pm until 1am, and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The Nobu Bar beside it opens at 6pm for a Mahia Negroni first.

Upstairs, the round roof is a second reason to book: a sushi bar of nigiri, sashimi and maki from noon to 6pm, a Mediterranean and Moroccan restaurant from noon until late, and DJ sets after dark, with the city on every side and the Atlas to the south on a clear day. Breakfast is in the from rate, and in-room dining runs 24 hours. Hivernage's dinner shows and La Mamounia's restaurants are within 8 minutes on foot.

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Medina, Marrakech

Royal Mansour Marrakech has four restaurants and four bars, and two of the tables are destinations. At La Grande Table Marocaine, behind a brass door off a blue patio, Hélène Darroze oversees a kitchen that cooks family recipes of the Moroccan kitchen at haute cuisine level, to oud and lute music, every evening from 7pm to 10.30pm. It is a member of Les Grandes Tables du Monde, and on Fridays it serves a couscous lunch at 600 dirhams, about €55.

Sesamo is the Italian room, under Massimiliano Alajmo, in a Venetian-palace setting. La Grande Brasserie, the French brasserie, serves from 7am, with a Sunday brunch, and the bars, from the Art Deco Main Bar to the Cigar Bar and the Library, open from 11am to 1am. Breakfast is in every rate.

La Mamounia

Medina, Marrakech

La Mamounia has four restaurants, four bars and two tea rooms, all open to outside diners who book. Jean-Georges Vongerichten's L'Asiatique runs from Japan to India, and Simone Zanoni's L'Italien is a light-filled trattoria with a wood-fired oven; both serve lunch and dinner every day, opening onto the gardens. Le Marocain, a riad deep in the gardens, serves dinner only, with lobster pastilla, langoustine tagine and musicians on violin and lute. A 1,500 m² kitchen garden supplies the restaurants.

Pierre Hermé runs Le Menzeh in the gardens and a tea room on an Andalusian patio, with macarons made for the hotel, and Le Churchill, fitted out as a Pullman carriage, pours champagne and cocktails from 4pm to 1am. Breakfast is extra, a buffet by the pool from 7:00 to 11:00, and elegant dress is the rule in every room.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Marrakech

Does Marrakech have MICHELIN-starred restaurants?

No. MICHELIN has no restaurant selection for Morocco, so no restaurant in Marrakech carries a star. It does rate the city's hotels with its Keys: La Mamounia has three and Royal Mansour Marrakech two. For a serious dinner, La Grande Table Marocaine at Royal Mansour Marrakech is a member of Les Grandes Tables du Monde, and Nobu Marrakech serves Nobu Matsuhisa's menu every evening.

Can you eat at La Mamounia or Royal Mansour without staying there?

Yes, with a booking. All of La Mamounia's restaurants, bars and tea rooms are open to outside diners who book, and the elegant dress code applies to them too. Royal Mansour Marrakech's restaurants take outside guests, so book early: La Grande Table Marocaine serves dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm and a Friday couscous lunch at 600 dirhams, about €55. Nobu Marrakech is open to non-residents every evening.

Do Marrakech hotels serve alcohol?

Many riads do not, but all three of these do. Nobu Hotel Marrakech serves alcohol throughout, from the Nobu Bar to the round rooftop. Royal Mansour Marrakech has four bars, from the Main Bar to the Cigar Bar and the Library, open from 11am to 1am. La Mamounia has four bars, Le Churchill among them, pouring champagne and cocktails from 4pm to 1am.

What is the dress code for dinner at La Mamounia and Nobu?

At La Mamounia, elegant dress in every restaurant and bar: no plastic sandals or flip-flops at any hour, and no shorts after 6pm, even smart ones; leather sandals are fine and children under 12 are exempt. At Nobu Marrakech, smart casual, with closed shoes and long trousers or smart shorts for men. The Rooftop Garden at Nobu asks for elegant casual dress, with no shorts.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
