What we looked for

A spa in Marrakech is built around the hammam: a hot, humid steam bath, a scrub and then rest. What separates the hotels is everything around it. The big three, Royal Mansour Marrakech, La Mamounia and Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, run full spas of 2,500 to 3,500 m², each with a hammam, treatment rooms and an indoor pool. Palais Namaskar and Nobu Hotel Marrakech add privacy or scale. La Villa des Orangers and Dar Rhizlane keep it small: a hammam and a few treatment rooms in a house.

Choose by the kind of day you want. For a whole spa day in winter, an indoor pool matters, since nights are cold from November to March. Check the age rules if you travel with teenagers: Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech's spa is for adults, and so is La Mamounia's indoor pool. And book treatments when you book the room.

Royal Mansour Marrakech: A riad roof terrace with its plunge poolThe grand one

1 / 7

Royal Mansour Marrakech

Medina, Marrakech

The spa at Royal Mansour Marrakech fills 2,500 m² over three floors, inside the walled estate. At its heart is a hammam in white marble, and beside it a heated indoor pool under an orangery-style canopy. There are 10 treatment rooms and three spa suites, a hair and beauty salon and a fitness room, and it opens from 9am to 9pm, late enough for a treatment after a day in the souks.

The riads carry the idea home. Every riad has a roof terrace with its own plunge pool, and the one-bedroom riads a solarium too, so the rest after the hammam can happen in private, over the Medina rooftops. The three-bedroom Prestige riads go further, with a hammam of their own. Outside, the 30-metre garden pool sits among gardens of a little more than 2.5 hectares.

La Mamounia

Medina, Marrakech

La Mamounia's spa covers 2,500 m², with two hammams and a private hammam, 10 treatment rooms, a sauna, a jacuzzi and an indoor pool heated to 28°C all year. The indoor pool is for guests of 18 and over, or 16 and over with an adult, so it stays an adult space.

The spa sits inside gardens that make the rest of the day part of the cure: two-century-old olive trees, orange groves and rose beds, and an outdoor pool for guests only, also heated to 28°C all year. After the hammam, Pierre Hermé's afternoon tea is served in a pavilion in the gardens or on an Andalusian patio. The MICHELIN Guide gives the hotel three Keys, its highest rank.

Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech

Route d'Amizmiz, Marrakech

Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech has the largest spa on this list: 3,500 m², built like a modern riad, with treatment rooms, hammam rituals and an indoor pool. It is for guests aged 18 and over, so parents get a quiet afternoon while the children are at the free Kids' Club for ages 3 to 12. The 1,500 m² Fitness Centre, with a semi-Olympic lap pool, is also for adults.

Around it is a 231-hectare estate in an old olive grove on the Route d'Amizmiz, with the High Atlas on the horizon. The main pool is 100 metres long and heated to 28°C, and there are four clay tennis courts, two padel courts and an 18-hole golf course. Jemaa el-Fna is a 20-minute drive, and a free shuttle runs into the city at set times.

Nobu Hotel Marrakech: The round rooftop pool with the Koutoubia beyondThe table

4 / 7

Nobu Hotel Marrakech

Hivernage, Marrakech

The Pearl Spa at Nobu Hotel Marrakech lies below ground and covers more than 2,000 m², with a heated mosaic pool, a hammam and private treatment suites. Guests count it among the hotel's best features. It is the calm counterweight to a lively hotel.

Above it, every room is a suite, and the round rooftop has a pool open all year from 10am to 6pm, with cabanas, a sushi bar and the Atlas on the southern skyline on a clear day. The hotel is in Hivernage, a petit taxi of about five minutes from Jemaa el-Fna, so a spa morning fits around an afternoon in the souks.

The room to book

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite

about 80 m²€1,175 a night

About 80 m², with a marble bathroom of double sinks, a rainfall shower and a freestanding tub: a spa of your own upstairs.

Every room, and why

Plan the rooftop pool for the day, since it closes at 6pm; in winter the heated pool in The Pearl Spa is the warmer swim.

€€€€From about €735 a night

Palais Namaskar: Reflecting pools and the gold dome at duskThe view

5 / 7

Palais Namaskar

Palmeraie, Marrakech

The spa at Palais Namaskar is 650 m², and its strength is privacy. There are six treatment rooms, two of them private duo suites, each with its own hammam; the larger has a fireplace and a heated pool. The products are by Aromatherapy Associates and Botanika, and the fitness studio opens from 07:00 to 23:00.

The resort around it is made for slow days. Lakes, cascades and reflecting pools run through five hectares of gardens beyond the Palmeraie, every one of the 41 rooms, suites, villas and palaces has its own terrace, and the Junior Suites, Pool Suites, villas and palaces have private pools. Guests praise the quiet water gardens away from the city. The Medina is about 24 minutes by car, which suits a stay built around the spa.

La Villa des Orangers: The 16-metre pool in its own patioThe all-rounder

6 / 7

La Villa des Orangers

Medina, Marrakech

La Villa des Orangers keeps its spa small and handsome. Its hammam, 60 m² of marble, mosaic and columns, takes a Roman bath as its model, and there are three treatment rooms, one of them a double, and a fitness terrace on the roof.

The water is the rest of the treatment. A 16-metre pool sits in its own patio among citrus trees and arches, there is a plunge pool on the roof, and both are heated in season. Breakfast is served from 06:30 by the pool or in the courtyards, and drinks on the roof, facing the Koutoubia, run from 18:00 to 21:00. The Koutoubia is 8 minutes on foot and Jemaa el-Fna 11, so a hammam fits neatly after a morning in the Medina.

Dar Rhizlane: The pool below the house at duskThe insider one

7 / 7

Dar Rhizlane

Hivernage, Marrakech

Dar Rhizlane's spa is a traditional hammam, a hot, humid steam bath with scrubs, followed by massages, facials and wraps in the treatment rooms, with a relaxation area and hot drinks afterwards. There is a gym too.

The setting does much of the work. The house stands behind a gate in Hivernage among lily and papyrus pools, grapefruit trees and palms, with an outdoor pool in the Andalusian garden. Lunch and dinner move to the terrace beside the pool in good weather, and Le Mimouna cooks inventive Moroccan dishes with seasonal produce, so a hammam afternoon can end with dinner at home. The Medina is about 5 minutes by taxi on clear roads, nearer 15 in heavy traffic.

Questions people ask

Good questions about Marrakech

Which Marrakech hotels have an indoor spa pool?

Four of these seven have one in the spa. Royal Mansour Marrakech has a heated indoor pool under an orangery-style canopy in its 2,500 m² spa. La Mamounia's indoor pool is heated to 28°C all year. Nobu Hotel Marrakech has a heated mosaic pool in The Pearl Spa, more than 2,000 m² below ground. Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech has an indoor pool in its 3,500 m² spa. Palais Namaskar's larger duo suite also has a heated pool of its own.

Can teenagers use the hotel spas in Marrakech?

Not everywhere. La Mamounia's indoor pool is for guests of 18 and over, or 16 and over with an adult. At Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech the spa, its indoor pool and the Fitness Centre are all for guests aged 18 and over, so teenagers have the 100-metre main pool, tennis, padel and golf lessons instead. Ask the other hotels about their age rules when you book treatments.

Which hotels in Marrakech have a private hammam?

La Mamounia has a private hammam alongside its two hammams. Palais Namaskar has two private duo suites in its spa, each with its own hammam, and the larger one adds a fireplace and a heated pool. At Royal Mansour Marrakech, the three-bedroom Prestige riads each have a hammam of their own, and the Grand Riad has one too.

What is a hammam treatment like?

A hammam is a hot, humid steam bath, the traditional Moroccan bath. In a hotel spa it usually means time in the steam room, a scrub, then a massage, a wrap or a facial and a rest. At Dar Rhizlane the hammam ends in a relaxation area with hot drinks. La Villa des Orangers' 60 m² hammam, with marble, mosaic and columns, is modelled on a Roman bath, and Royal Mansour Marrakech's is in white marble.

How did you choose these hotels?

Independently, through extensive research, trusted sources and first-hand visits. Hotels cannot pay to be included, and every one of the ten has to exist for a different reason.
