Ouzoud is a set of waterfalls in the Atlas foothills of Azilal province, where the river drops about 110 metres in tiers into a gorge of red rock. It is the long day out from Marrakech: our routing puts the falls 160 km from the Medina, a little over three hours' drive each way on clear roads. The minibus collects you from your hotel or riad, or from the nearest point a van can reach, and the listing includes a coffee stop on the way through olive groves and Berber villages.

At Ouzoud you meet a certified local guide, if you chose an option with one. The walk follows shaded paths through the olive trees to viewpoints over the falls, then goes down into the canyon. The Barbary macaques live here in the wild, around the paths and the terraces. At the bottom, a flat wooden boat, rowed by a boatman, takes you across the pool to the base of the main cascade, into the spray, where the listing speaks of near-constant rainbows in the mist. Then there is free time to swim in the river pools or to eat: tagine, salads and mint tea on a terrace facing the falls, paid for on the spot unless you booked lunch. The path back up gives you the other side of the gorge.

The day runs 11 to 12 hours, back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver. The price starts at 12.93 euros on GetYourGuide on 31 October 2026, for the simplest option; the guide and the boat are options or add-ons, and the calendar shows what each costs on your date. There is no ticket for the falls in the listing.

The macaques are the second reason to go. The species is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, and Ouzoud is the one place in the central High Atlas where tourists feed them: researchers who watched one group here between 2007 and 2012 found that food from people made up about a fifth of its feeding time. Watch them; keep your snacks in your bag.

Why this one

GetYourGuide sells a dozen Ouzoud days from Marrakech, and they look alike: same road, same falls, same boats. What separates them is how well they are run. This one was rated 4.8 from about 14,500 reviews on 31 October 2026, with the guide, the transport and the value each scored 4.8, and 94% of English-speaking travellers giving it five stars. It also lets you choose: transport only, or with the guide, the boat and lunch, in English, French, Spanish or Arabic.

The most-reviewed rival, Ouzoud Falls Guided Hike, Boat Ride and Lunch, holds 4.6 from about 40,800 reviews, from 18.87 euros with lunch in the title: the better buy if you want everything fixed in one price. Ouzoud Waterfalls, Guide, Boat & Optional Lunch is rated 4.8 from about 6,900, from 12.60 euros, and is as good a choice on a date this one is full. If three hours each way is too much, our Atlas Mountains and Imlil valley day trip is mountains and villages at half the distance, and Essaouira day trip from Marrakech: medina, port and beach trades the gorge for the Atlantic. Both, and the rest of our ten, are on our Marrakech page at /marrakech/.

Good for

  • Families with active children: monkeys, a boat and a river to swim in
  • Anyone who needs a green, cooler day after the Medina
  • A first trip out of Marrakech with everything arranged

Not for

  • Wheelchair users, and anyone who finds steep paths hard: the listing rules out low fitness and the over-70s
  • Anyone who gets carsick: it is about six hours on the road
  • Travellers with only two or three days in Marrakech

Temperature is the median at 13:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Clear sky is the share of days with little cloud at 13:00; rainy days, the share of days with 1 mm of rain or more. Modelled from Open-Meteo historical weather for 2021 to 2025 at the falls.

Spring and autumn, not high summer

In the five years we looked at, the median at 13:00 at the falls was 37.4°C in July and 36.6°C in August, with rain on almost no days. April, May, October and November ran between 23.6°C and 28.9°C. February and March are the wettest months, with rain on about a quarter to more than a third of days, and the coolest, around 19 to 20°C at 13:00.

From our Marrakech hotels

Drive times are routed on OpenStreetMap from each hotel in our edit to the falls, with the roads clear and no stops; the day itself includes a coffee stop. The listing includes pickup and drop-off at hotels and riads in the city centre, and says riads a van cannot reach are met at a nearby meeting point: in the Medina, that is the nearest gate or square. Our Medina and Hivernage hotels are inside that. The listing charges extra beyond 8 km of the centre, which takes in the Fairmont Royal Palm on the Route d'Amizmiz, Palais Namaskar in the Palmeraie and Inara Camp in the Agafay: ask the operator for the price before you book.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Guides who know the paths, explain what you see and keep the group together
  • Punctual pickups and comfortable vehicles for a long drive
  • The boat into the spray at the foot of the falls, and the macaques on the way down

Complaints

  • A tight timetable at the falls: some would like more free time

The catch

  1. Choose the option with the guide and the boat

The from-price is the simplest option. The listing includes the certified guide and the boat only if you choose an option or add-on with them, and food is not included.

What to do. Pick the guided option with the boat when you book, and carry dirhams for lunch and drinks.

  2. It is a long day on the road

The falls are about 160 km from the Medina on our routing, a little over three hours' drive each way, and the day runs 11 to 12 hours with pickups across the city.

What to do. Bring water and snacks, and something for travel sickness if you need it.

  3. The gorge is a walk down and back up

The guided walk goes down into the canyon and climbs back out, on paths and steps. The listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with a low level of fitness or people over 70.

What to do. Wear comfortable shoes with grip, and take it slowly on the climb.

  4. Midsummer is very hot

In the five summers we looked at, the median at 13:00 at the falls was 37.4°C in July and 36.6°C in August.

What to do. Go between March and May or in October and November if you can; in summer, bring a hat, sun cream and swimwear for the pools.

  5. Look, do not feed

The macaques are wild and Endangered. Researchers at Ouzoud found food from people made up about a fifth of one group's feeding time, and recommend conservation plans take account of it.

What to do. Keep food in your bag and watch from a little distance.

  6. Outside the centre, pickup costs extra

Pickup is included in the city centre; the listing charges extra beyond 8 km, and riads a van cannot reach are met at a nearby point.

What to do. From the Palmeraie, the Route d'Amizmiz or the Agafay, ask the operator for the price first; in the Medina, check the meeting point in your confirmation.
