What does a New York view cost? We priced the upgrade, room by room
Every New York hotel sells a view, and they all charge for it differently. We took the same room with and without the view at nine of our hotels, priced both on the same night and worked out what the skyline, the river or the park actually costs.

The short answer
On Tuesday 26 January 2027, a view room cost a median $126 a night more than the same room without one, about 21%, including taxes and fees. The cheapest real view was at citizenM Bowery: $18 more for a panorama over Manhattan. The dearest like-for-like upgrade was a Brooklyn Bridge view at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, $168 more.
The premium is not linked to the hotel's price. At The Carlyle, the Madison Avenue room was just $82 (5%) more than the courtyard room, while at The William Vale the Manhattan skyline added $158, 45%. If the view is the point of your trip, book the view category by name: a request is not a promise.
What only this guide tells you
Same room, same night, with and without the view
View rooms are usually bigger or newer than the basic room, so comparing "cheapest room" with "view room" exaggerates what the view costs. We matched rooms that are the same size with the same bed, using each hotel's own room descriptions for what each one faces, and priced both on Expedia for the same night, all at the lowest rate including taxes and fees.
That isolates the price of the view itself. It also shows which views are cheap enough to be an easy yes and which hotels charge more for the window than for the room.
The views worth taking without thinking
Which New York hotels have a cheap room with a view?
These are the upgrades we would take every time, and the rooms that get you a skyline for the least money.
citizenM New York BoweryGuest room, 1 King, Premium view
14 m², $227 on 26 Jan 2027
$18 more than the same room without the view, for a panorama over Manhattan from a middle to high floor. The cheapest view in our edit by a distance.
The William ValeManhattan View Queen with Balcony
22 m² plus a balcony, $438 on 26 Jan 2027
The cheapest way to the skyline at The William Vale: $75 less than the Manhattan View King, with the same view from your own balcony.
TWA HotelDeluxe King With Historic TWA View
$331 on 26 Jan 2027
$19 more for a window onto Eero Saarinen's 1962 Flight Center, the reason to stay here. The runway rooms cost $107 more again.
The Carlyle, A Rosewood HotelMadison Room
35 m², $1,738 on 26 Jan 2027
Madison Avenue instead of the courtyard for $82 more, the smallest premium at any of our grand hotels.
When you pay more for the window than the room
Is a Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge view worth it?
Some views cost more than the space around them. At The Carlyle, the Central Park Suite cost $5,376 for 1,200 sq ft (111 m²), $4.48 a square foot, against $3.31 for The Carlyle Suite on Madison Avenue: the park adds about 35% for the same space. The Plaza had nothing on Expedia that night; on the hotel's own booking engine for a Tuesday in late January 2027, before tax, the Carnegie Partial Park View suite was $480 more than the Edwardian suite of about the same size.
Nine Orchard runs the other way. Its Supreme View King Suite, 37 m² with a skyline view from a high floor, cost $1,294, which works out cheaper per square foot than the 33 m² Corner King at $1,180. When the view room is also the bigger room, it can be the better buy.
1 Hotel Brooklyn BridgeBridge King
27 m², $766 on 26 Jan 2027
The Brooklyn Bridge from your window. At $168 more than the inland Dumbo King, the dearest like-for-like view in our table, and the one we would pay for if it is the view you came for.
Nine OrchardSupreme View King Suite
37 m², $1,294 on 26 Jan 2027
A skyline view from a high floor, and more room than the Corner King for less per square foot. The rare view upgrade that also buys space.
How to get the view you are paying for
What the room lists suggest, from booking a lot of New York hotel rooms.
- Book the view by nameA view is only guaranteed when it is in the room's name or description. "Requested" views depend on the night's occupancy. If the view matters, the category with the view in its name is the one to book.
- Read what the hotel says the room facesBooking sites shorten room names. Expedia lists one 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge room as "Statue of Liberty"; the hotel itself describes the outlook as the East River and the Financial District. Check the hotel's own room page before you pay for a landmark.
- Corner rooms are the cheapest lightAt The Fifth Avenue Hotel the Corner King, with windows on two walls, cost $49 more than the Grand King of the same size. Not a postcard view, but the brightest room for the money.
- High floor is not the same as a viewcitizenM sells a high-floor room for $7 more and a view room for $18 more. Only the second promises what you will see.
- Spend on the view where you will be in the roomA skyline is wasted if you are out from breakfast to midnight. It earns its price on a short trip with a balcony, a long evening in, or a winter weekend when you will be looking out more than walking.
The catch
One night's prices, in a quiet month
We priced a single Tuesday in late January, a quiet week for New York hotels. The gap between rooms can widen when the city is busy.
What to do. Price your own dates with the full room list open, comparing the view room with the same room without one.
A view is not a guarantee of what is in it
Hotels describe what a room faces, not what is in the way: scaffolding, a neighbour's tower or weather can change what you see.
What to do. If a particular landmark is the point, ask the hotel which floors and rooms see it best when you book.
Room names on booking sites differ from the hotel's
Expedia's names are shorter and sometimes different from the hotel's own. We matched rooms of the same size and bed by hand and left out anything we could not match with certainty.
What to do. Before you book, check the size, bed and outlook in the room details match the room you meant.
