New York after dark: the best evening from each of our ten hotels
New York's best evenings are spread across three boroughs, and the one to book depends on where you sleep. For each hotel in our New York edit we chose the best evening nearby from our things-to-do list, routed the trip there, and set out the price with fees, the start times and the time you are back at the hotel.

The short answer
From most of our hotels, a candlelit concert, a jazz hour or a dinner show is less than 20 minutes away. The closest is The Jazz Room, an 8-minute walk from The Fifth Avenue Hotel, from $32.40 with fees. The cheapest is Candlelight at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, a 16-minute walk from The Carlyle, from $30.78 on the balcony.
Most of these evenings last about an hour, so an 18:30 start has you back at the hotel before 20:00 and a 20:45 start by about 22:05. The latest is a Saturday 20:00 Speakeasy, Die Softly dinner show near The Plaza, back by about 22:35. The subway runs 24 hours a day, MTA says, so a late night does not need a taxi.

What only this guide tells you
Door to door, with the time you are back
Lists of things to do in New York at night ignore one question: how far it is from where you sleep. We started from the hotel. For each of our ten hotels we routed the trip on OpenStreetMap to the venues of the seven evenings in our New York things-to-do list. We gave the walking time where it was under about 20 minutes and the taxi time without traffic where it was not. Then we read each show's start times and length on Fever and added the trip home, so the table shows when you are back at the hotel, not only when the curtain goes up.
The result is one evening per hotel. Most of the walks are 17 minutes or less, and the furthest taxi from a Manhattan or Brooklyn hotel is 10 minutes. Only the TWA Hotel, at JFK, is 30 minutes from anything on the list, and its best evening is in its own terminal.
The best evening from each hotel
What is there to do in NYC at night near my hotel?
One evening per hotel, chosen from our New York things-to-do list for how close it is and how good the night is. Every price is the lowest ticket on Fever for that show with the booking fee included, read on 29 October 2026. The last column gives the end time of the session we would book and the time you are back at the hotel by the same route, without traffic or a drink afterwards.
Two of the ten are walks of 8 minutes: The Fifth Avenue Hotel to The Jazz Room and citizenM New York Bowery to Catacombs by Candlelight. Three more are walks of 16 or 17 minutes, from The Carlyle, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and Hotel Chelsea, and from The Plaza the taxi is 5 minutes.

Midtown and the Upper East Side: The Plaza and The Carlyle
What is the best evening near The Plaza or The Carlyle?
From The Plaza, book Speakeasy, Die Softly at Carmine's Times Square, 5 minutes away by taxi or 23 on foot. It is a whole evening in one ticket: a 1920s murder mystery played around your table in Carmine's Sinatra Room, with a singer, a pianist and a three-course family-style dinner of Caesar salad, penne alla vodka, chicken parmigiana, shrimp scampi, tiramisu and cannoli. It is $139.95 with fees on Fever, rated 4.7 from 477 reviews, and drinks are extra. Shows run on Mondays and Fridays at 19:00, Saturdays at 16:00 and 20:00 and Sundays at 17:00, and last two to two and a half hours. A 19:00 start has you back at The Plaza by about 21:35; the Saturday 20:00 show by about 22:35. The N, R and W run from Times Sq-42 St to Fifth Avenue/59th Street, three minutes from the hotel's door.
If you would rather eat elsewhere, The Jazz Room at Sony Hall on West 46th Street is 4 minutes away by taxi: Journey to the Heart of Cuba on 22 November 2026 and the Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong tribute on 24 January 2027, at 18:30 and 21:00, from $24.30 for standing room. It is 21 and over.
From The Carlyle, walk 16 minutes up Madison and Fifth Avenue to Candlelight at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, at 90th Street. A string quartet plays an hour of Queen and ABBA, Hans Zimmer or Juan Gabriel by candlelight, and balcony seats start at $30.78 with fees, the cheapest evening in this guide. Start times run from 18:00 to 21:00 by date: Hans Zimmer at 18:00 on Friday 20 November and 18:30 on Friday 8 January, Queen vs. ABBA at 18:30 on Thursday 14 January. After an 18:30 concert you are back at the hotel by about 19:50, in time for Bemelmans Bar, where a jazz trio plays from 21:00.

- Arrive when the doors openCandlelight seats are not numbered, so the best seats in your zone go to whoever arrives first. Doors open 45 minutes before the start, and nobody is let in once the music starts.
- Dress up for Carmine's if you like1920s dress is encouraged at Speakeasy, Die Softly, not required, and seats at the shared tables go first come, first served: book your group in one order to sit together.
NoMad and Chelsea: The Fifth Avenue Hotel and Hotel Chelsea
What is the best evening near The Fifth Avenue Hotel or Hotel Chelsea?
The Fifth Avenue Hotel has the shortest trip in this guide: The Cutting Room on East 32nd Street is an 8-minute walk. The Jazz Room puts a live band and singers in a seated supper club for about an hour of songs most people know. Book A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans on Friday 4 December 2026 or Friday 12 February 2027, or Marvin Gaye in a Night of Soul from Sunday 6 December 2026 to Saturday 30 January 2027, each at 18:30 and 20:30. Every ticket is a seat, from $32.40 with fees on the balcony. After the 20:30 show you are back at the hotel by about 21:40, and on Fridays and Saturdays the Portrait Bar downstairs is open until 2am. It is 21 and over, and doors open an hour before the start.
From Hotel Chelsea, walk 17 minutes west on 27th Street to Sculpture Without Sight at Unarthodox: 90 minutes of shaping a clay head with a blindfold on, to music and scent. It is $65 on Fever with no booking fee, rated 4.7 from 665 reviews, and 18 and over. On 29 October 2026 Fever had nine dates on sale to 29 November, mostly Fridays to Sundays; that evening's class ran from 19:00 to 21:00, which has you back at the hotel by about 21:20, with the Lobby Bar pouring until two.
For something without a set time, ARTE MUSEUM at Chelsea Piers is also a 17-minute walk from Hotel Chelsea: an hour among projected waves, forests and roses, open daily until 21:00 with last entry at 19:30, from $39.99 for adults Monday to Thursday with no booking fee.

- Pick your Jazz Room zone with friendsSeats inside a zone are first come, first served, and a group sits together only if it arrives together with tickets in the same zone.
- Go to ARTE MUSEUM on a weekdayAdult tickets are $39.99 Monday to Thursday, $49.99 on Fridays and Sundays and $54.99 on Saturdays, on Fever on 29 October 2026.
Downtown Manhattan: The Beekman, Nine Orchard and citizenM New York Bowery
What is the best evening near the Financial District or the Lower East Side?
From The Beekman, the evening to book is The Jury Experience at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn, 9 minutes by taxi, or one subway ride: the 2, 3, 4 and 5 run from Fulton Street, two minutes from the hotel, to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. You are the jury of a staged trial for 60 minutes, voting on your phone as the witnesses take the stand. The Deadly Boat Ride plays on Friday 6 November at 18:00 and 20:30, from $40.61 with fees during a time-limited offer on 29 October, and The Killer AI on Saturday 19 December and Saturday 23 January at 16:00 and 18:30, from $49.68. A 20:30 trial ends at 21:30, and you are back by about 21:40, when The Bar Room is still serving.
From citizenM New York Bowery, walk 8 minutes to Catacombs by Candlelight at the Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral on Mulberry Street. A licensed guide takes you through the walled cemeteries, the church and the candlelit vaults beneath it, the only Catholic catacombs in New York, for 80 minutes. It is $38 for adults with fees, $32 for children and seniors, rated 4.6 from 5,701 reviews. Tours run Thursday to Monday, and the last of the day starts at 16:00, so it is an early evening: out at about 17:20, back at the hotel by 17:30, and up to cloudM on the top floor, open until 12:30am to anyone 21 or over.
From Nine Orchard, Candlelight at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights is 8 minutes by taxi. The 20:45 concerts, Lauryn Hill on Saturday 14 November and Thursday 21 January and Dolly Parton on Thursday 12 November, end at 21:45 and have you back by about 21:55, in time for a late martini in the Swan Room. Catacombs by Candlelight is an 18-minute walk if you would rather start earlier.

- Check in early at the catacombsCheck-in is at 266 Mulberry Street at least 15 minutes before your tour. It is the Old Cathedral in Nolita, not St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue, and half the tour is outdoors, rain or shine.
- Bring a charged phone to the juryYou vote by scanning a QR code with your own phone. Doors close 5 minutes before the start, and The Jury Experience admits no one under 12.
Brooklyn: 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and The William Vale
What is the best evening near DUMBO or Williamsburg?
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is a 17-minute walk from St. Ann & the Holy Trinity on Montague Street, the room we would choose for Candlelight in New York: an 1847 Gothic Revival church with its original stained glass and a candlelit aisle. The Taylor Swift tribute, the most reviewed Candlelight show in the city on our list at 4.8 from 1,510 reviews, plays at 18:30 on Thursday 12 November 2026, Thursday 21 January and Friday 19 February 2027, from $38.34 with fees, and runs 65 minutes. The 20:45 concerts end at 21:45, and you are back by about 22:05, when Harriet's Lounge on the tenth floor is open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Jury Experience at Roulette is the other evening from 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, 7 minutes away by taxi, on the same dates as from The Beekman.
The William Vale is 10 minutes by taxi from Catacombs by Candlelight in Nolita, the nearest of our evenings. Take the 16:00 tour, be back by about 17:30 without traffic, and finish on the 22nd floor at Westlight, which looks over Manhattan and the East River and stays open until 2am on Saturdays. For a later night, Candlelight at St. Ann's is 11 minutes by taxi and The Jury Experience 12.

At JFK: the TWA Hotel
What is there to do at night near the TWA Hotel?
Everything on our list is about 30 minutes from the TWA Hotel by taxi without traffic, so the best evening here is the hotel itself. The Sunken Lounge, the red conversation pit under the Solari departures board, serves cocktails; Connie, a 1958 Lockheed Constellation on the apron, is a cocktail bar, and the rooftop pool looks across the runways. Book it for the first or last night of a trip, as we say on its page.
If you land early and want a show in town, The Jazz Room at The Cutting Room is 30 minutes by taxi: the 18:30 show ends at 19:30 and has you back by about 20:00 without traffic. The AirTrain, which runs around the clock, takes you to the Long Island Rail Road and the subway at Jamaica.

- Time your trip into townThe 30 minutes is a taxi without traffic. In the evening rush, allow more, or take the AirTrain to Jamaica and the Long Island Rail Road, about 30 minutes in all to Penn Station.
Getting back late, and staying safe
Is the New York subway open all night?
Yes. "The subway operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year," MTA says. For most riders a ride costs $3, paid by tapping a contactless card, phone or watch at the turnstile, and OMNY caps the spend: once you have paid $35 on subways and local buses within seven days, the rest of that seven days is free. MTA also publishes a late-night diagram of how the subway runs overnight; check it before you rely on a particular train.
MTA's own advice applies at any hour: stand back from the platform edge, and if you need help, ask a station agent or use a blue Help Point intercom. To report a crime in progress, tell an MTA employee or a police officer, use a Help Point or call 911.
The simplest way to get back late is to choose the evening that is a walk from your hotel. Five of our ten evenings are walks of 17 minutes or less, and the latest finish in this guide, a Saturday 20:00 Speakeasy, Die Softly, is 5 minutes from The Plaza by taxi, or a few stops on the N, R or W from Times Sq-42 St to Fifth Avenue/59th Street.

Two evenings, two hotels
Should I split my New York stay between two hotels?
If you have two nights to spend, book the hotel to the evening rather than the other way round. Uptown and downtown New York are different cities after dark, and one short move between them puts each evening on your doorstep.
One weekend that works on the dates on sale: on Friday 20 November 2026, stay at The Carlyle, walk 17 minutes to Candlelight: The Best of Hans Zimmer at the Church of the Heavenly Rest at 18:00, be back by about 19:20 and take a seat in Bemelmans Bar before the jazz trio starts at 21:00. On Saturday 21 November, move to citizenM New York Bowery, walk 8 minutes to the 16:00 tour of Catacombs by Candlelight, eat in Nolita and finish at cloudM on the roof.
For an arrival or a departure, put the TWA Hotel at one end. Spend the last evening in the Sunken Lounge and you are four minutes' walk from the AirTrain in the morning.

- Book the show first, then the roomMost of these evenings play only a few dates. Pick the date from the table, then book the hotel nearest it.

The catch
Late means locked out
Candlelight, The Jazz Room and The Jury Experience let no one in once the show begins, and Fever does not refund a missed start. Our taxi times are without traffic.
What to do. Leave the hotel at least 30 minutes before the start, or take the subway in the evening rush.
Few dates, booked weeks ahead
Apart from ARTE MUSEUM and Catacombs by Candlelight, these evenings play on set dates, and on 29 October 2026 Fever had sessions loaded only to 29 November for Sculpture Without Sight and 6 December for Speakeasy, Die Softly.
What to do. Choose the date from the table first, then book the hotel nearest it.
The catacombs are an early evening
The last Catacombs by Candlelight tour starts at 16:00, Thursday to Monday, and ends at about 17:20.
What to do. Treat it as the start of the evening: book dinner in Nolita for afterwards.
