The take on The William Vale

The William Vale opened in 2016 on North 12th Street, in a part of Williamsburg where most buildings stop at four to six storeys. Albo Liberis designed it, and the tower stands on a sculptural truss of four legs and a centre truss, with offices inside it and the hotel rooms on the 11th to 21st floors above. EOS Hospitality bought the hotel for $177 million in June 2024, after its owner's Chapter 11 in 2021, and kept the name.

There are 183 rooms and suites, each with floor-to-ceiling glass and a private furnished balcony, and direction is what separates them. The entry King with Balcony is 260 sq ft (24 m²) with a 71 sq ft (7 m²) balcony, sold on neighbourhood views. The tower is a slab whose long sides look north over Greenpoint and south over Williamsburg, so Manhattan belongs to its narrow west end and the corners beside it. There the Manhattan View Queen, at 240 sq ft (22 m²), and the Manhattan View King, at 260, turn the balcony to the skyline. Deep tubs start in the suites, including the Manhattan View Corner Suite with its wraparound balcony and the two-floor Vale Garden Residence, whose 1,632 sq ft (152 m²) patio has an open-air Jacuzzi.

That balcony is why it is the all-rounder: a Manhattan View room on a high floor puts Midtown in front of your own chair, from the towers around Madison Square and Hudson Yards to the Empire State Building, and the building covers the hours either side. Westlight, the bar on the 22nd floor, looks over Manhattan, the East River and Williamsburg. In summer the 60-foot pool on the fourth-floor terrace is included for guests by reservation; in 2026 it ran from 22 May to 7 September. In winter the fourth floor hosts the Winter Spa, with panoramic barrel saunas and cedar hot tubs for two, at extra cost. Leuca cooks Southern Italian downstairs, and the entry rooms sit in the mid-range.

The trade is that you are in Brooklyn and share the building, and the skyline has a new neighbour: West Wharf, a 40-storey Greenpoint tower leasing since 2023, stands just right of the Empire State Building. Bedford Avenue station is a ten-minute walk, and Midtown means a change from the L. Westlight draws the neighbourhood in, and two of the four lift banks serve it, so guests wait on busy evenings. The pool is a summer pleasure, and a nightly destination fee sits on top of the rate. Book it if you want Williamsburg's restaurants and bars at the door and Manhattan in front of you, and pay for the room that faces it.

The William Vale: the room to book, Manhattan View Queen with Balcony

The entry King with Balcony is 260 sq ft (24 m²) and sold on neighbourhood views over Williamsburg. The Manhattan View Queen is 240 sq ft (22 m²) with a 72 sq ft (7 m²) balcony turned to the skyline, and on a late-January weeknight it was about $70 above the entry room, the cheapest way to make the view the hotel is chosen for your own.

Ask for
If you want a king bed, the same outlook comes as the Manhattan View King with Balcony at 260 sq ft (24 m²). For a summer stay, reserve pool time early, because guest access to the pool runs on reservations. Ask for a high floor as well: rooms run from the 11th to the 21st floor, and on the lowest ones the roof of 25 Kent, the eight-storey office block across Wythe Avenue, cuts across the bottom of the Manhattan view.
Avoid
The King with Balcony if the skyline is the point. More space does not buy the view either: the Junior King Suite and the King One Bedroom Suite are sold on neighbourhood and Brooklyn views, and among the suites only the Manhattan View Corner Suite and the Vale Garden Residence face Manhattan.

Westlight

Chef Andrew CarmelliniRooftop cocktail bar and small plates on the 22nd floor, facing the Manhattan skyline

The reason the lifts are busy. Westlight sits on the 22nd floor with views over Manhattan, the East River and Williamsburg, and it is a neighbourhood fixture as much as a hotel bar, run by Andrew Carmellini's NoHo Hospitality with small plates from his kitchen. It opens at 4pm on weekdays and at noon at weekends, running to 2am on Saturdays. Book for sunset and for weekends, when walk-ins depend on space. In summer the open-air Turf Club opens a floor above, over-21s only, with a $30 entry on some nights.

Chef Andrew CarmelliniSouthern Italian: house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, seafood and grilled meat

The hotel's main dining room, also from Carmellini's NoHo Hospitality, cooking the south of Italy: pasta made in house, pizza from the wood oven, seafood and grilled meat. It is not in the MICHELIN Guide's current New York selection, so treat it as a dependable neighbourhood Italian that saves a decision on arrival night rather than a reason to cross the river. Lunch runs on weekdays and brunch at weekends, dinner to 10pm and to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and every guest's destination fee includes $10 off a bill charged to the room.

Where The William Vale is, and getting there

The hotel stands on North 12th Street between Wythe Avenue and Berry Street, on the North Side of Williamsburg. McCarren Park is three minutes east, Marsha P. Johnson State Park on the East River eight minutes west, and Domino Park 17 minutes south.

Bedford Avenue station, ten minutes on foot, has the L, one stop under the river to 1st Avenue and on to Union Square. Nassau Avenue, eight minutes, has the G, which links Brooklyn and Queens without entering Manhattan. The NYC Ferry landing at North Williamsburg, 14 minutes away, runs down to Wall Street and up to East 34th Street. JFK is about 35 minutes by car off-peak, and valet parking in the hotel garage is $50 for 24 hours. On noise, the plaza is public and Westlight runs until 2am on Saturdays, so weekend nights are lively at the foot and the top of the tower.
