Porto and the Douro before you book: the practical facts

Everything below was checked while building the Porto and Douro edit and has no page of its own. It is the practical layer under the ten hotel pages: how to get in from the airport and up the valley, what Porto and Gaia add to the bill, how the hills and the bridge work, which addresses are loud and when the season runs. Dated, sourced, and corrected when it changes.

Arriving at Porto airport

Metro line E, the violet line, runs from the airport to Trindade in 27 minutes. The trip needs a Z4 ticket at 2.30 euros, loaded on a rechargeable Andante card that costs 60 cents; if you will ride all day, the Andante Tour at 7.75 euros covers the whole network for 24 hours and costs less than the 8.55 euro day ticket for four zones. Through the day a train leaves the airport about every 15 minutes, from about six in the morning until the last one at 00:42. At Trindade, line D runs every four to eight minutes through the day to Aliados and São Bento and across the river to General Torres, nine minutes on foot from The Yeatman, and The One Monumental Palace is a seven-minute walk from Trindade itself. After the last train, STCP's night bus 3M runs hourly from the airport to Avenida dos Aliados between 00:30 and 05:30.

By road with a clear run, the airport is 12 minutes from Vila Foz, 17 from Avenida dos Aliados and the Cais de Gaia, 19 from Ribeira and 20 from The Yeatman. The hotels' own estimates allow for traffic: 20 minutes at Vila Foz, and 20 to 25 by taxi or private transfer at The One Monumental Palace. Hotel transfers are priced on request: Torel Avantgarde says its airport transfer may carry a fee, and The Vintage House prices by car, passengers and distance. Ask for the quote when you book, and compare it with a taxi on the day.

Getting to the Douro Valley

CP's Douro line runs up the river from Porto, and its direct trains to Pinhão start at Campanhã rather than São Bento; Campanhã is six or seven minutes from Trindade on the Metro. Four direct InterRegional trains a day leave Campanhã for Pinhão, at 07:30, 09:30, 13:30 and 17:30, and take 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 21 minutes; the 15:20 from São Bento also gets there, at 17:37, with a two-minute change at Régua. One way to Pinhão is 12.35 euros from Campanhã or 12.45 from São Bento, and São Bento to Régua is 11.10. Coming back, the last direct train leaves Pinhão at 18:11 and reaches Campanhã at 20:30. The 20:24 needs changes at Régua and Marco de Canaveses and gets into São Bento at 23:40.

The train suits two of the three valley hotels. The Vintage House is eight minutes on foot from Pinhão station. Quinta Nova collects its guests free at Ferrão, the stop before Pinhão, or at the pier there, for check-in and check-out, and it is worth the call: the estate's own site calls the Douro's roads challenging, and the 5.7 km from Ferrão station take 21 minutes. Six Senses Douro Valley is eight minutes by car from Régua station. Driving from São Bento it is 83 minutes to Six Senses, 97 to The Vintage House and 112 to Quinta Nova, which is why the valley is a stay rather than a day trip.

Getting around Porto: the hills, the bridge and the trams

Porto is walkable if you accept the gradient: Praça da Ribeira to The One Monumental Palace on Avenida dos Aliados is a kilometre and 14 minutes on foot, and a climb of about 75 metres whichever street you take. The Guindais funicular, which lifts you 61 metres from the river to Batalha, is closed for maintenance with no reopening date given, so from the quays you walk or take a taxi. Metro line D keeps to the high ground, crossing the top deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, which it shares with pedestrians, from Aliados and São Bento to Jardim do Morro and General Torres, the stop for The Yeatman. The Rebello is 22 minutes from Praça da Ribeira on foot over the lower deck.

A Z2 Andante ticket, 1.40 euros, covers the centre with unlimited changes for an hour; the Andante Tour is 7.75 euros a day or 16.55 for three. The historic trams are priced separately: line 1 runs along the river from the historic centre to the Jardim do Passeio Alegre every 20 minutes or so from 08:40 to 20:43, at 6 euros a ride bought on board or 12 for two days. The metroBus runs from Casa da Música to Praça do Império for the same 1.40 euros, but Vila Foz is 24 minutes on foot from its terminus and 32 from the tram's, so from Foz take a taxi, 11 minutes from Aliados with a clear run. The official Porto.CARD, the city's museum and discount pass, is off sale while it is restructured.

The tourist taxes, bank by bank

Porto charges 3 euros a person a night from the age of 13, collected by the hotel on top of the room rate, for up to seven consecutive nights, so no stay costs one person more than 21 euros. It rose from 2 euros on 1 December 2024. Children of 12 and under are exempt, and so are stays for medical treatment and guests with a disability of 60 per cent or more, each with up to two companions, if you can show the paperwork.

Vila Nova de Gaia, home to The Yeatman and The Rebello, raised its own tax from 2.50 euros to 3 on 21 August 2026. It also stops after seven consecutive nights, but it starts at 16 rather than 13, so a family with teenagers pays less on the Gaia side. The Yeatman's own terms put it at 3 euros per night per guest, charged at check-out. Two adults staying five nights pay 30 euros on either bank.

The valley is different. None of the three municipalities that hold the Douro hotels, Lamego for Six Senses, Sabrosa for Quinta Nova at Covas do Douro and Alijó for The Vintage House at Pinhão, has an overnight tax in its published table of fees, so for now there is nothing of the kind to add to a valley bill. If a charge by that name appears on one, ask what it is for.

Porto
€3 a person a night, age 13 and over

7 consecutive nights, €21 a person
Vila Nova de Gaia, since 21 August 2026

no overnight tax in their fee tables

The season, and the harvest in the valley

The Yeatman's outdoor pool opens from April to October, and so does The Vintage House's. April to October is the season, and November to February is cheaper. Cancellation terms differ from rate to rate, so read yours before you book.

In the valley, Croft says the harvest begins in mid-September, and its Quinta da Roêda in Pinhão lets visitors tread grapes in its granite lagares for 60 euros a head, booked in advance, while the harvest lasts. Quinta Nova's guided visits run Tuesday to Saturday, four a day from April to October and three from November to March, and its restaurant, Terraçu's, closes from 23 to 27 December.

Which addresses are loud

The noise follows the river and the Baixa, and one night outdoes the rest. On 23 June São João fills Avenida dos Aliados and both waterfronts, all three on the Metro's list of main gathering points, and the fireworks go up at 23:59. In 2026 the Metro stopped crossing the bridge from 23:30 to 01:00, the top deck closed to walkers from noon, and Aliados and São Bento stations shut from 22:00. The One Monumental Palace is on the avenue, 1872 River House is four minutes' walk from Praça da Ribeira and The Rebello is on the Cais de Gaia, so for those three it is a night to join rather than sleep through.

On ordinary nights the city's rules do some of the work. Drinks cannot be sold for the street after 21:00 anywhere in Porto, and in the containment zone that covers much of the Baixa, terraces must close at midnight during the week and at two on Friday and Saturday nights; the rules are lifted for São João and New Year's Eve. Casa da Companhia, on pedestrian Rua das Flores, has a bar with its doors open to the street, so ask for a room away from it, and 1872 River House offers ear plugs on request.

The quieter addresses sit above the water or beyond the centre: The Yeatman up the hill on Rua do Choupelo, Torel Avantgarde on the Miragaia hillside, Vila Foz on the Atlantic front in Foz, and the three valley hotels, well over an hour's drive from any of it.

What the rate includes, and what it does not

Read the rate before you pay, because what it includes varies. 1872 River House includes breakfast on some rates, not all, so choose one that does, and at The Rebello and The Vintage House check that yours includes it. The Yeatman includes breakfast only on some rates and charges 45 euros a head otherwise. The Yeatman, The Vintage House and Vila Foz have parking on site, the last two when there is space; check whether your rate includes it.

At the other city hotels, parking costs extra where there is any. Torel Avantgarde charges 30 euros a night and asks you to reserve the space; The Rebello's car park beside the Cais de Gaia charges a small daily fee it does not put a figure on; The One Monumental Palace asks guests to check rates with the team before arrival; 1872 River House advises against arriving by car at all. Transfers vary: Quinta Nova's is free between Ferrão and the estate at check-in and check-out, while Torel Avantgarde's may carry a fee and The Vintage House prices its cars on request.

Spas have their own rules: The Rebello's, semi-heated pool included, must be booked in advance, and its water lounge admits children from seven with an adult; Vila Foz's wellness area is for guests of 16 and over. The tourist tax is collected separately, and The Yeatman adds it at check-out.

What changed recently

Both city taxes went up: Porto's to 3 euros on 1 December 2024 and Gaia's to 3 euros on 21 August 2026. The metroBus, hydrogen buses with their own stations along the Boavista, opened between Casa da Música and Praça do Império at the end of February 2026, free at first, and has charged the ordinary Z2 fare since 20 April. The Metro's Rosa line, three kilometres of tunnel with four stations between São Bento and Casa da Música, is due to be finished at the end of 2026 and to open at the end of March 2027 after testing; until then, São Bento to Casa da Música means a change at Trindade. The Rubi line, which will cross the Douro on a new bridge between Casa da Música and Gaia, is still under construction.

Closer to the ground, the Guindais funicular between Ribeira and Batalha is closed for maintenance, so the climb from the river is on foot or by taxi, and the city's official Porto.CARD is temporarily off sale while it is restructured. CP's Douro timetable in force since 5 August 2026 runs the direct Pinhão trains from Campanhã, and Metro and CP fares were last reset on 1 January 2026; the fares on this page are the current ones.
