Casa da Companhia

Casa da Companhia is the 16th-century house at Rua das Flores 69 that the port company now called Real Companhia Velha rented in the 18th century. The shell was built by the family of a Porto merchant noble, Brás Brandão, and the interiors you walk through date from the company's time under Pombal, which is why the stone, the vaulted ceilings and the worn steps read as fabric rather than decoration. IHG's Vignette Collection opened it as a 40-room hotel in March 2023, keeping all of that and threading a central courtyard through the middle. Rua das Flores is pedestrianised, so you step out into the prettiest street of the Baixa with São Bento station five minutes away.

Rooms run from the entry categories up to a handful of suites, and in a 16th-century shell they vary in shape rather than in finish, which is worth knowing when you book the cheapest one. The look is quiet and modern set against the old stone, neutral and unfussy, with no theming. The ground floor is where the house works hardest. A Tasquinha opens its doors straight onto Rua das Flores and serves Portuguese small plates from half twelve until ten at night, and O Legado da Casa does contemporary Portuguese cooking in the evening, from half six until ten.

What makes it the balanced choice is how many things it does properly at once. There is a heated indoor pool open from half seven in the morning until eight at night, a small rooftop pool with the cathedral in view, a spa by L'Occitane with a sauna and a Turkish bath booked at reception, and a Technogym room for guests over sixteen. Guest feedback returns to the same points: the breakfast, the warmth of the staff and the calm of the pools on a hot afternoon.

The compromise is that none of it is exceptional on its own. The rooftop pool is a plunge rather than a swim, the entry rooms in a 16th-century shell vary in shape, and a full house stretches the team, with service thinning when every room is occupied. Only official taxis and licensed transfers may drive into the pedestrianised street, not Uber or Bolt, and guests still report a walk over cobbles with luggage; the public car park is about 200 metres away. Rua das Flores is busy from afternoon into evening and street-facing rooms hear it despite the glazing, and the cancellation terms are strict on the cheaper rates. For a first Porto trip that wants everything within reach, that trade reads well.
