Vila Foz is the reason to consider not staying in the centre at all. The hotel is a restored 19th-century palacete on Avenida Montevideu, the seafront road in Foz do Douro where the river has already met the Atlantic, with a contemporary wing behind it and interiors by Nini Andrade Silva. The Porto practice Miguel Cardoso Arquitecto did the restoration and the new build, and the two opened together as a hotel in 2019. Cross the road and you are on the promenade. Praia do Homem do Leme, a Blue Flag beach with sand between the rocks, is across the road too, from just north of the hotel to a few hundred metres south.
Sixty-six rooms are split between the two buildings, and the split matters. The Manor House rooms and suites are in the old house, from 24 square metres up to a 48 square metre attic suite facing the ocean, and they hold the mouldings and the proportions. The Onice wing, named for the onyx in its bathrooms, runs from 28 to 70 square metres and gives you the balconies, the terraces with day beds and the wider sea views. Public rooms are Andrade Silva at full stretch, in technical stone, hydraulic mosaic and bronze.
Two things justify the half-hour trip from the old town. The first is Arnaldo Azevedo's dining room, one Michelin star in the 2026 guide, dinner only from Tuesday to Saturday, with a vegetarian tasting menu alongside the Atlantic one. They are called Novo Mundo and Maresia, and there is a counter seat for two in front of the kitchen if you want to watch. Azevedo also runs Flor de Lis, the second restaurant, on seasonal menus, and the bar does oysters and afternoon tea until midnight. The second is the spa, an indoor pool with sauna, Turkish bath and cold plunge, no under-16s, which turns a wet February into a reason to stay in.
The trade is real. You will take the 500 bus or a taxi to see Porto itself, and guest feedback splits on the buildings. The palace rooms have the character, the new wing has the balconies and the bigger sea views. Pick a side before you book. Service reports are inconsistent, with room allocation and billing the recurring gripes, and there is no outdoor pool, so the swimming is cold Atlantic between rocks rather than a lie-down strand. It suits anyone who would rather walk the seafront before breakfast than step out into the old town.
