What we looked for

In Rome a hotel spa is measured against the ancient baths, and the good ones borrow openly: one here runs a caldarium, tepidarium and frigidarium in travertine, another tiles its pool after the Baths of Caracalla. Three of our ten are worth booking for the spa itself, and all three are central. Six Senses Rome is on Piazza di San Marcello, a small square off Via del Corso, eight minutes' walk from the Pantheon. Bvlgari Hotel Roma and ROMEO Roma are five minutes apart in Campo Marzio, a shopping quarter that goes quiet once the shops shut, which suits an evening that ends in the spa.

Choose by the water you want. Six Senses Rome is a bathing ritual in three plunge pools. Bvlgari Hotel Roma has a 20 metre indoor pool and the longest hours of the three, 7am to 9pm. ROMEO Roma has a pool that runs from indoors out into the garden, and keeps spa and pool for its own guests.

The bathhouse was built for the hotel inside an 18th-century palazzo, and it is the reason to book. Its three plunge pools are set out as a Roman caldarium, tepidarium and frigidarium, the walls lined in travertine carved with laurel leaves, the floor a Palladiana set with green Cipollino marble. Every guest of 16 and over has the baths in the room rate, from 9am to 8pm, and every treatment starts with an hour in them. The rest of the spa matches it: five treatment rooms, one for couples, a hammam, a sauna, a meditation room, an aerial yoga studio and a biohacking room, and the gym is open around the clock.

The pools are for soaking rather than lengths, so if you want to swim, choose one of the other two. Come out of the spa and the Trevi Fountain is six minutes away.

Bvlgari Hotel Roma

The spa fills 1,500 square metres of a 1930s building facing the Mausoleum of Augustus, and it is built around the natatio, a 20 metre indoor pool. Bisazza laid the mosaic after the Baths of Caracalla, the eight columns standing in the water are faced in ribbed arabescato marble, and the two bronze spouts were cast by the lost-wax method. The spa also has eight treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room and a spa suite with a green onyx bath, with Augustinus Bader treatments and a Zerobody cryo bed on the menu.

It opens at 7am and closes at 9pm every day, the longest hours of the three, so a swim fits before breakfast and a treatment after a day on foot. The Spanish Steps are eight minutes' walk from the door.

ROMEO Roma keeps its spa and pool for hotel guests, the only one of the three that does. The pool begins inside, crosses into the garden and finishes over the excavations, on a glass floor about four metres above a Roman workshop uncovered during the building work. The Sisley Paris spa opens daily from 10am to 8pm for facials, body treatments, manicures and pedicures, and the gym never closes. Some rates include two hours of spa and pool access, so check what yours includes.

The theme carries into the rooms: from the Junior Suite up there is a steam shower, and the Premier Wellness Suite and the Fresco Suite have a sauna of their own. Via di Ripetta is a residential street that goes quiet early, which suits a slow spa stay.
