The dive starts at Puerto Calero marina, on the south coast between Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. You check in at Submarine Safaris' office on the marina 30 minutes before your dive time, walk out to the yellow submarine, Sub Fun Tres, and climb down a short vertical ladder through the hatch. Inside it looks more like a narrow bus than a film submarine: 44 seats along a central aisle, each facing one of 22 round viewports 80 cm across, with two larger windows, 1.6 metres across, at the ends. The cabin is kept at the pressure of the surface, so ears do not pop, and the operator says that makes it fine in pregnancy and for people with heart or ear conditions.

Then it dives. The operator gives the normal depth as 25 to 30 metres, where most of the fish are, and settles the submarine on the seabed so you can take photos. A screen shows the depth and the sea temperature, the pilots work in view at the front, and an audio guide on headphones explains what passes the windows. The route takes in three wrecks. One is the Tenderete, a tuna boat of about 30 metres that the company stripped of its engines and fuel tanks and sank at 25 metres in June 2009, as an artificial reef for fish, La Voz de Lanzarote reported at the time. The operator calls it a 50-minute dive, about an hour with boarding; afterwards you get a dive certificate, a fish chart and free time on the marina.

Submarine Safaris had been running daily dives off Puerto Calero for 12 years by 2009, by La Voz de Lanzarote's count. The operator says Sub Fun Tres is the island's only tourist submarine, built in Finland, 18.5 metres long and 106 tonnes, with six electric motors, every system duplicated and a surface boat watching each dive. Its sister, Sub Fun Cinco, dives from Amarilla Marina on Tenerife, and the operator puts the two at over 52,000 dives between them. The listing says there are up to seven dives a day, six days a week.

Why this one

There is one tourist submarine on Lanzarote, so the choice is where to buy it, and whether you would rather see the sea some other way. On GetYourGuide on 26 October 2026 this dive was rated 4.6 from about 1,600 reviews, from 65 euros, with the guide scored 4.7, the transport 4.6 and value for money 4.2. Submarine Safaris sells the same dive on its own site for 61.75 euros an adult and 39.90 a child with its online discount, against 65 and 42 at the desk, and says its bus is free. Booking direct saves a few euros a head; GetYourGuide lets you reserve now and pay later, with the same free cancellation up to 24 hours before, alongside the rest of your trips.

If you would rather be in the water yourself, two of our other sea pages are the better choice for swimmers: a first scuba dive with an instructor for two (75 euros, rated 5.0 from about 450 reviews) or the kayak and snorkel trip to the Papagayo coves (45 euros, rated 4.8 from about 520 reviews, from age 5). The submarine is the one for children from 2, non-swimmers, grandparents and anyone who wants the wrecks at 30 metres without a wetsuit.

Good for

  • Families with children from 2, swimmers or not
  • Anyone who wants the seabed at 30 metres and to stay dry
  • A windy day when the beach and the boats are less fun

Not for

  • Anyone who cannot climb a short vertical ladder unaided
  • Babies under 2, who cannot board
  • Divers and snorkellers who have seen the fish close up

When to go

What the sea and the weather at Puerto Calero are like month by month, around midday. Waves and calm days are modelled for the open sea off the marina; temperature and rain for the marina at 12:00.

Waves are the median of each day's highest wave between 10:00 and 15:00 at sea off the marina; calm sea, the share of days when they stay under 1.5 metres. Temperature is the median at 12:00, with the coldest day in ten after it. Rain is the share of days with 1 mm or more.

Calmest from May to October

In the sea data we looked at, the day's highest waves off Puerto Calero stayed under 1.5 metres on almost every day from May to October, against two days in three in March. The operator says visibility at depth changes with the weather and the state of the sea, so a calm spell is the time to go.

What guests keep saying

Recurring themes in the tour’s reviews, in our words, never quoted.

Praised

  • Something different to do on holiday, and children love it
  • Clear explanations through the dive, and friendly, helpful staff
  • A bus that is easy to use from the main resorts

Complaints

  • Short for the price: the hour includes boarding, and the fish vary from dive to dive

The catch

  1. It is about 50 minutes under water

The operator calls it a 50-minute dive and about an hour with boarding. Some guests expected a full hour at depth.

What to do. Make a morning of it: the marina has cafés, and Puerto del Carmen is under ten minutes by car.

  2. Your dive time sets your pickup

The bus runs from Playa Blanca only for the 11:00 and 13:00 dives, and from Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen only for the 12:00 and 14:00 dives.

What to do. Pick the dive time that matches your resort before you pick the date.

  3. There is a ladder to climb

You board and leave through the hatch by two short vertical ladders, and guests must manage them unaided. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters cannot be taken.

What to do. If anyone in your group is unsteady on ladders, call the office on +34 928 512898 before you book.

  4. Under-2s stay on the surface

The operator does not take children under 2 on the dive under any circumstances, for safety reasons.

What to do. With a baby, one adult can wait on the marina; the operator says it can arrange a bus for non-divers if you call.

  5. The sea sets the view

The fish are wild and vary from dive to dive, and the operator says visibility changes with the weather and the state of the sea. In the data we looked at, March had the most rough days, about one in three.

What to do. Book early in your stay, from May to October if you can, so a murky day leaves time to go again.

  6. Direct is a few euros cheaper

On 26 October 2026 the operator sold the dive online for 61.75 euros an adult and 39.90 a child, against from 65 on GetYourGuide.

What to do. Book direct for the lowest price; book here to reserve now, pay later and keep your trips in one place.
